Work Text:
Luke was no stranger to being forgotten. He usually made up for it by being loud and overly confident, but sometimes that wasn’t enough.
Today was Lukes birthday, or at least it was a few minutes ago, and the only people who had wished him a happy birthday were his parents and his science teacher.
Luke had the birthdays of everyone he loved on a calendar. he bought and made them all gifts, he wished them happy birthday the second he woke up on their birthdays. So why was it that once his birthday rolled around, nobody did the same for him?
He had woken up energetic and practically vibrating with excitement, looking forward to whatever his friends had planned to celebrate.
Getting ready was a quick process, only putting slightly more effort in then he usually would. He picked out simple jeans and his favourite tank top knowing that he wouldn’t want an outfit that’s hard on the senses if there’s a birthday party or anything like that.
His excitement increased tenfold when he went to eat breakfast and found a massive stack of bacon and pancakes on the table, the words “happy birthday Luke” written in whipped cream on top. He smiled brightly at Emily once they had all eaten and quickly kissed her cheek before grabbing his bag and leaving.
The ride to school was predictably uneventful, but to Lukes surprise, the school day was as well.
Luke talked normally to his friends but as the day went on he engaged less and less, realizing that they had truly forgotten. They had all clearly noticed his slow decline in mood, but Reggie was the one who finally asked. Luke just brushed it off and said he didn’t feel well, and while the boys obviously didn’t believe him they didn’t push.
The rest of the day passed in a bit of a blur, his final period science teacher wished him a happy birthday as he left the class and that made Luke smile.
He didn’t fully come back to himself until he was laying on his bed at home, his phone resting on his stomach and music playing loudly out of the speakers under the bed. As the clock approached midnight he kept checking his phone hoping there would be at least one message from his friends, but the only notification he had received since school let out was the automatic “wind-down will begin soon” notification he had gotten a couple minutes ago.
He quickly posted a couple pictures he had taken throughout the day on instagram with the caption “happy birthday to me :)” before he went to sleep. He woke up to a bunch of texts from his friends, all saying something along the line of “oh shit dude im so sorry, happy birthday” and while none of them made him feel any better about them forgetting, at least he knew they still cared and it was just an honest mistake.
