Chapter Text

After two wrong turns and a quick stop to refuel and recheck the route, Eddie finally pulled up to the fire station. They were a little late but Lucy didn't seem to care. She simply got off the bike and, pressing the helmet into Eddie's hands, leaned over him to kiss him on the cheek. He only heard the short warning ‘on your six’ and a second later Lucy jogged away, waving enthusiastically at someone. Eddie stared after her, a little confused, until he heard a familiar voice behind him.

“Good morning. I see you two are getting along.”

Eddie nodded to Bobby and looked briefly in the direction Lucy had disappeared. Now he saw the reason behind that little kiss.

Eddie wasn’t too keen on pretending that something was going on between them but the possibility of people digging into his past wasn’t too attractive either. As far as everyone was concerned he and Lucy met at that dinner party and that meant he didn’t have to come up with any convincing story.

So like always, Eddie just went with the flow, playing into the situation, not confirming nor denying. He rested his hands on a helmet between his legs and said the most generic thing that came to his mind.

“She’s a great girl.”

“That she is. You treat her right, understood?”

Eddie wanted to say lightly something about Lucy keeping things casual but the way Bobby looked at him made Eddie feel like he was 20 years old again and had his first uninterrupted 48 hours of training in the rain, mud, and under constant pressure of orders.

The only words he was able to said back then were the same automatic response he was saying now, which was:

“Yes, sir.”

Bobby seemed pleased and responded with a slight nod and an approving smile. No further comment was made, and the captain's slightly raised eyebrows suggested that the ‘ warning ’ was more of a joke than a serious one. Eddie frowned, getting the impression that Bobby was having fun at his expense; he didn't like being played. But before he could show his dissatisfaction in some form of sharp retort, Bobby spoke again.

“I talked with Michael and he said there are a few openings he could recommend you to… if you’re interested.”

Bobby watched him with a gentle expression. However, Eddie didn’t read this as such. He felt like he was being analyzed and judged. As if it was some kind of test. Based on his military experience, which Bobby unintentionally triggered, he made up his mind about the captain. He put him in the same box as every other officer-type-figure he faced.

“Scrapyard job is fine.” Eddie replied carelessly, defiant to bend under the captain's authority.

“I see.” Bobby's expression remained unchanged, so did his polite tone. “If you change your mind just give Michael a call.” An honest, kind smile was like a fatherly pat on the back as Bobby added “I’ll see you inside,” and walked away.

Even if Eddie wanted to back out now, he was deprived of that opportunity. This odd conversation also left him a bit dumbfounded. He wasn’t sure if he was feeling proud or stupid for failing Bobby’s probing.

Not wanting to think too deeply about what had just happened, much less whether he should be here at all, Eddie let out a short sigh and after a while he moved his ass towards the entrance of the firehouse. His day was off to a great start and he wasn't about to let anything ruin his good mood.

Eddie felt confident with his more ‘ presentable look’ - as Lucy called it. She had sent him to her nextdoor neighbor, Tucker, with whom Eddie just clicked instantly. Tucker was also a Harley enthusiast and a fellow soldier. He was currently into custom-printed clothing business, so Eddie had the opportunity to pick up some of his production scraps at a bargain price. It felt good to finally have his own clothes and not just using stuff Lucy’s ex-boyfriend left behind.

It also felt good to pay Lucy for the spare bedroom. They never discussed the rent but she didn’t comment when he handed her the money, so Eddie figured it should have been enough.

Truth be told, other than paying Lucy, Eddie didn't particularly care about anything else - what he was wearing, the way he looked. He was used to living on the bare minimum and seemed to need nothing more than a hot meal every two days and a place to sleep. But he'd be lying if he said it didn't make any difference. Because it fucking did.

He felt more like himself in well-fitted, military green cargo pants, black short sleeve henley and dark hooded-trucker jacket. The same was with his body. All groomed, with his beard cut and shaped like he used to, trimmed to short stubble he liked the most.

Only his hairs grew at their own discretion but they were still short enough for him not to worry about it. He just ruffled them a bit as he went inside the firehouse.

Eddie slowed his pace and whistled softly with some appreciation at his first impression of the firefighters' workplace. The interior was decorated here and there in green, several tables were already covered with food, and on the others someone was laying out items donated for charity sale.

Eddie looked around for Buck's familiar figure, but before he could locate him, Hen stopped next to him. She held a packet of disposable plates in her hands.

“Hello.” The woman smiled warmly at him. “How are you feeling?”

“Good,” Eddie focused his attention on her, “...good, thanks.”

Hen raised one eyebrow in silent question. Eddie actually wanted to say something more, but he didn't really know how to choose the words. Hen must have sensed it, because after a while she looked away from him as if he were an animal whose trust can be gained by giving it more space. But Eddie only spoke when the woman seemed ready to leave.

“Can you tell me how Jamal is doing?” The question came out of his mouth a little hurriedly, as if he needed to get it out before he changed his mind. So he added with a skewed smile when Hen looked at him again. “I don't really know who to ask.”

“He's good, all things considered. From what I know the damage wasn’t that severe. The doctors are hopeful he will make a full recovery.” Her attitude was professional but she also offered something soothing with her last sentence.

“Okay,” Eddie just nodded, accepting the information. “Thanks.”

It was good news and he felt better with the knowledge but the gentleness in the woman's voice confused him. He didn’t understand why he suddenly felt out of place and a little lost.

“You've helped, Eddie.” Hen stated like she was declaring some universal truth. She looked at him as if she was looking for confirmation that he was aware of this.

“I only…”

"No." She raised her hand, preventing him from finishing. This gesture was enough to make him look intently into Hen's eyes. “I know it doesn't feel like much but it made a difference. You did a good job.”

The feeling of being lost subsided a little, replaced by something else. Eddie didn't realize he needed to hear that. That he didn't screw anything up.

He must have been silent longer than he thought, because Hen patted him lightly on the shoulder, smiling brightly. As if understanding what was going on in his head, she changed the subject.

“You came here with Lucy?”

The light tone of her question made Eddie regain all of his confidence. Somehow Hen made the reassurance in her words and gestures seem natural and like no big deal. He needed that too.

“Actually I’m here as a muscle since she can’t help much with that busted hand… so, where do you need me?” Eddie spread his arms a little, showing that he was ready for any task.

Hen raised her head, clearly satisfied with his helpful attitude.

“Ok, come with me.”

Buck played with the rope, tying knots in the air with minimal movements. He threw it over the transverse railing so that rope wrapped around it several times and with a light flick of the wrist he set the rope in motion again. It looked like an illusion, a rope came to life and listened to his commands, obediently tying subsequent knots. Just one tug was enough to untangle everything and start over.

It was one of Buck's skills that he was very proud of, though he didn't get to use it very often. Today's occasion was entertainment, and since the goal was noble, Buck decided to warm up.

He heard Lucy’s laugh from the direction of the food stalls. He wanted to say hello to her, after all, they hadn't seen each other for several days. However, when he turned around, his breathing stopped for a split second. His hands worked automatically, without any supervision, tying knot after knot on the taut rope.

Eddie was helping Hen move an extra table. They were talking about something, they must have been joking because Eddie was laughing cheerfully.

Buck let out a soft sigh that made his parted lips curled up in a wide smile. Eddie showed up. He didn't answer him at the scrapyard then, and Buck didn't ask again after that. He didn't want to push his luck. But Eddie came. He couldn't be here long and he was already rolling up his sleeves and taking part in the preparations.

Suddenly Hen jerked her head towards Buck.

When Eddie looked at him over his shoulder and smiled, something in Buck's chest fluttered with elation. He was sure that if Eddie had so much as nodded for him to come, Buck's heart would have jumped out first and flown across the room to land at Eddie's feet.

He didn't expect that admitting to having some feelings for Eddie would backfire in a form of the most ridiculous thoughts. Feeling his cheeks getting hot, he mentally scolded his immaturity and turned his attention to the rope he was holding in his hands - which had far too many knots on it. He was trying to focus on untangling them, but he couldn’t help stealing a glance every few seconds.

Tiger looked differently somehow, more defined and sharp, like Buck could cut himself if he wasn’t careful. He looked good, really good… it actually should be illegal to look this good because it created a real hazard and Buck wasn’t prepared to be careful. Not that he wanted to be anyway. The point was, Eddie looked good… like ‘ roguishly handsome ’ had a new synonym… which was now walking towards Buck.

Buck untangled the last knot and recast the rope, trying to act casual as he continued his warm-up.

“Glad you could make it.” He greeted Eddie with a warm smile when he was only a few steps away.

“That’s a neat trick.”

Tiger pointed at the rope but Buck’s eyes were still on him. He was sure of his skills, it was a muscle memory, so he didn’t have to look at it to know his performance was on point. But Eddie watched it carefully, with a hint of fascination playing on his face. When he realized Buck didn’t really pay attention to the rope and yet it was still listening to every subtle gesture he made, Eddie looked at him with raised eyebrow and his head cocked slightly to the side.

“Impressive.” He smiled playfully. “And here I thought St. Patrick’s was all about drinking Guinness in ridiculous green hats.”

A gleeful feeling spread across Buck’s chest all the way up to his face where it beamed in a form of proud smile.

“Oh, it totally is…” Buck untangled the rope and cast it again, still keeping his full attention on Eddie, “…but we picked that day to bring more people over and put money into charity instead of beer today.”

“Clever.” Tiger continued to watch Buck's performance, glancing at him from time to time. “I was sure you just wanted to celebrate because some of you are Irish.”

“I mean, I never asked but I believe Bobby has some Irish heritage.” Suddenly, Buck remembered a school project involving his name. As a result, he never celebrated St. Patrick's Day, but that didn't mean he couldn't start now. It was worth a shot. “And of course Buckley is an Irish name so…” He smiled seductively. “You should kiss me, you know… for luck.”

Tiger side-eyed him with a half-smile curling the corner of his mouth and then shifted his weight to the other leg, getting close enough to Buck to brush shoulder to shoulder.

“If you're Irish…” Eddie looked at Buck's mouth. The tip of Tiger’s tongue spreaded the wetness over his unfairly perfect lips. Buck's heart pounded with tension. He really wanted to lean in but when Eddie raised his eyes Buck recognized that teasing spark in them. “...then your sister is too.”

“Ouch.” Despite literally hearing the disappointed sigh his heart made in his chest, Buck laughed, seeing Eddie’s mischievous smile as he pulled away.

“Buck!”

They both turned to the direction the voice came from. Maddie was approaching them, carrying a piece of paper and a green plastic cauldron filled with gold coins.

The boys exchanged glances and burst into laughter. Eddie put a hand on Buck's shoulder and turned away so Maddie couldn't see him as he tried to calm down.

Buck only had a few seconds, but he took advantage of every single one. He hadn't seen Eddie like that before, so close and relaxed with this almost goofy smile on his face. In this short moment it really felt like, above all, they were friends - joking around, having fun and ready to get into trouble together. As if they had been like this for years.

“Can you go help Sue unpack the gifts from the dispatch? She’s in a hurry.”

Maddie looked at them, frowning slightly. Buck wasn't about to explain the whole situation. He simply poked Eddie lightly to get his attention and then gave him a theatrical warning look.

As Buck was leaving, he heard a fragment of their conversation; little of surprise in his sister's voice.

“Irish? I doubt that.”

The older man bowed in thanks for the dance, and Lucy responded with a warm smile before returning to the ‘dancing booth’ - which was just a table with a donation box.

Initially, the idea was to add a ‘date with firefighter’ to the sale but, after some debate, it turned out that only she and Buck were willing to agree to it. She then jokingly said that maybe instead of bidding the whole evening, they would offer dancing. Everyone liked the idea, especially since there was no obligation to participate. If someone wanted to, all they had to do was stand behind a table near the area designated as the dance floor. They didn't have to wait long for guests willing to dance, and the whole party created a very cozy and light atmosphere.

Lucy looked around the firehouse with a wide smile. Maddie operated the food station efficiently. Hen was accepting gifts that would later go to the youth center, and Bobby was sorting out items for the fundraising sale. In front of the entrance, two teachers lined up the children in pairs and admonished them to behave nicely. There were people visiting them here and there, all with smiles on their faces, willing to help, nice to each other.

Lucy loved days like this. They reminded her that despite how dangerous their job was, this house was a safe haven for everyone.

“What are you smiling at?” Buck walked over to her with a tray full of muffins. He bit into one of them, looking around as if trying to figure out what she was grinning at.

“Nothing.” She simply shook her head. There was no point in explaining this feeling, Buck knew it too.

Chimney appeared from behind Buck and unceremoniously stole one of the muffins.

“E-e-eee… These are mine!” Buckley spoke with his mouth full. Taking advantage of his distraction, Lucy rolled up one of the baked goods for herself. Her friend gave her an offended look. “Betrayal!”

Just a moment later, Eddie appeared next to her, setting the empty green cauldron on the table with a sigh. He looked between the gathered people questioningly.

Buck glanced at Eddie, then at his muffins, and then at Eddie again. His face showed that he was struggling with this decision, but in the end he held out the tray towards Texas, inviting him to help himself.

“I just had one, thanks.” Eddie declined with a little wave.

Lucy knew that wasn't true. For the last 20 minutes, Texas had once again been hiding gold coins around the main hall so the kids could play treasure hunt. It was a job no one wanted, and one that Maddie had dragged him into.

Fondness softened Eddie’s expression for a second as he was watching Buck stuffing the rest of the muffin into his mouth. God, Texas knew how to lie without even a twitch and yet he was unable to hide such simple reactions. But somehow Buck didn’t notice a thing. Lucy saw all of this over a week ago and they were still playing the same tune. Idiots.

But no matter how cute the boys were, there was a more important scene unfolding before her eyes.

“Oh my god.” Lucy whispered at the same time as Chimney gasped “Whoa!”

Buck turned around to see what they were looking at and he almost choked on his food.

Ravi just walked into the firehouse holding hands with the most beautiful woman Lucy ever saw. She was stunning, with dark brown hair falling in waves on her shoulders and soft angelic smile. The simple green dress emphasized her slim waist and shapely bust, making the girl look airy and modest.

“He is the chosen one.” Chimney commented reverently as if he had just found a new faith.

As the three of them stared, Karen quickly ran to their table. She smiled victoriously and extended her open hand towards them, saying:

“Pay Up.”

Lucy had no reason to argue. A little clumsily, because of the arm cast, she took out the wallet to pay Karen.
“What was the bet?” Texas asked, looking like he was having fun with her misfortune.

“That Ravi's girlfriend is smokin hot.” Karen moved her fingers urgently towards the other firefighters.

“And these two said she’s not real.” Chimney pointed at Lucy and Buck.
“What did you say?” Eddie grew more curious seeing that Chim was also paying off the bet.

“That she’s bartender from Lloyd’s.”

“Isn't she like… out of his league?” Buck tried to fish the bills out of his pocket, still staring at the couple. The confused look on his face was priceless.

“Nonono…” Karen smirked, “…just because she’s out of yours doesn’t mean she’s out of his.”

“Yeah Buckley, maybe Ravi has something you don't.” Lucy couldn't help but tease her friend a little.

“Yeah, right.” Buck snorted as if he'd heard the most ridiculous joke ever and relaxed almost immediately.

Lucy couldn’t comprehend how someone with so much confidence can at the same time be this stereotypical sighing girl straight out from a romance novel - but she loved him either way.

Chimney tapped Buck on the shoulder and pointed to the school group that had gathered around one of the firetrucks. “Come on, kids are waiting.”

When they left, Lucy looked at Karen, who was counting the money she had earned. With a satisfied smile she then put it all together to the donation box on the table. Lucy was about to ask if she should call Hen when suddenly Karen pointed at Eddie.

“Come on, let’s dance.”

“I'm not a firefighter.” Texas stated with amusement. He probably thought that would be enough to turn Karen down. Poor guy.

“You’re at the table.” She responded as if this fact was carved in stone. “Money is in the box, you're dancing with me.”

Eddie looked at Lucy with those big doe-eyes of his, as if he was looking for an explanation to how he ended up in this situation. She had no intention of helping him, and besides, he wanted to be useful and support the charitable purpose of the entire event. And he was. Everyone gave him difficult tasks, and he bravely faced each of them. Dancing with Karen was more of a reward compared to being an errand boy for Maddie.

“Don’t look at me, I’m not making the rules.” Lucy raised her shoulders in an innocent gesture. Her hands were tied.

“Wasn't the whole thing your idea?” Eddie said rhetorically, only to have the last word, because he was already taking off his jacket and leading Karen to the dance floor.

Lucy watched them dance for a moment and then started looking around the firehouse again. Laughter, jokes, music and family atmosphere - just a fragment of what 118 was for her, and at the same time, every free moment she spent with her team was just like that. And Lucy wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

She chuckled, feeling a slight burning sensation in her eyes. She couldn't wait to get back to work. But for now - time for another dance.

Eddie threw the bag of garbage into the container and reached into his back pocket for cigarettes. He had been here for several hours and was doing everything he was asked to do. He deserved a break.

Between Maddie's assignments and getting involved in the dancing part of the event, he didn't have much time to talk to anyone. It had its pros and cons. Everyone was busy, often busier than he was, so he didn't have to engage in any major interactions with other people. The short exchanges were just natural. And even though he knew it was just an illusion, in a way he felt part of the team. He felt almost normal. That nagging feeling of being out of place became just a distant echo somewhere between the valley of denial and the peak of guilt.

However, he felt a certain dissatisfaction when it came to his interactions with Buck. He fed himself only with short moments that were just enough to quell his hunger, but not to satisfy it.

Eddie inhaled the smoke and stopped at the entrance to the firehouse. He leaned his arm against the wall so he could look inside. The sun was not as bright as the previous day, the sky was covered with clouds, so he could easily observe what was happening inside.

Scanning over the people in front of him, he focused on the firefighters. He was looking for the familiar head with slightly curling, dirty-blond hair.

He thought about Buck's roping skills. He didn't get to see the whole performance but he was still impressed by what he saw when he stopped by to watch the show

It looked like magic. Buck effortlessly made the rope listen to him, it almost danced in his hands. And of course, he did it all with that cocky smile of his, which brought back hot memories from a few days ago. This again led Eddie to wonder if Buck's skills could be used in a more… creative way. When he decided that he might actually enjoy being a part of a bedroom show - after all, he liked the use of ropes in sex - he cut his steamy thoughts short, and with a little smirk playing on his lips, he went back to his task.

Some time later, he joined an educational tour around the fire station. Maddie was right, Buck absolutely loved kids. He had something childish about him, which was most visible when he entered into a heated exchange with an exceptionally mouthy boy. Fortunately, before a verbal backyard-fight broke out, Chimney intervened and de-escalated the situation.

Even that scene showed Eddie how much Buck liked his job. It wasn't that it defined him, more so it supplemented or perhaps even emphasized his personality traits. Eddie knew this feeling firsthand from his time in the army. But while for Eddie it was all about his four-person unit, Buck had something more. It manifested as something incredibly integral to the way he moved around the place. And it was not just Buck.

Only now, as Eddie watched everyone from a distance, did he realize that he was merely a guest in someone else's house; a stranger in the family circle.

He shouldn't be here. The fact that he was driven by his own selfishness only confirmed that he didn't belong among such caring people. The thought made him take a step back, almost ready to retreat. Almost.

He heard Buck's voice and its resonant tones made Eddie immediately dart his eyes in his direction. Buck stood a distance away, completely focused on his conversation partner. Eddie could see Buck’s profile, his defined jawline and the little dimple in his cheek as he smiled in that charming, boyish way. But his voice was different, a slightly higher treble that Buck had never used with Eddie. This ear-drilling, jaw-clenching sound. It was a flirting voice, and Eddie heard it time and time again throughout this day.

He first noticed the flirty tone when Buck was instructing a volunteer who wanted to learn a rope trick. Another time, when Buck was talking to the teacher while belaying children who were sliding down the fire pole. At the time, Eddie thought Buck was just trying to be friendly.

Just like when he took his seat at the fundraising sale. Flirting seemed like a good way to get people to buy more items or stay with him longer, which meant spending more money.

At least that's how Eddie saw it - swallowing down the burning taste of irritation that settled low in his gut and reminded about itself every time he heard that slight jocular crack in Buck's voice. Every time he saw Buck closing one eye and just shooting away that characteristic half-smile.

There was being friendly and there was this stance that Buck was giving, his unfiltered ardor and undivided attention for other people. Which again, made sense, they were trying to raise more money, but the longer Eddie was watching him, the more he questioned if Buck was even aware how he affected people he talked with. He acted so natural and sincere. Was it a well aimed game or smooth skills? He had to be aware of what he was doing.

Like now, causing the girl he was talking with to blush and flutter her eyelashes, completely entranced. She started to say something, and Buck seemed genuinely interested. Eddie couldn't understand what she could possibly have to say that was so absorbing that Buck ignored the muffin’s filling that leaked onto his hand. Without taking his eyes off the girl, he began licking caramel off his fingers as if nothing had happened.

Eddie let out a small grunt, half annoyed and half weakened by the sight. He was almost sure Buck was doing it on purpose, but he had no idea why. They weren't at any of the event’s stands, the girl didn't have any gifts, they weren't dancing, there was no point in hitting on her. Especially since she certainly wouldn't be able to satisfy Buck, not like Eddie could.

He wanted Buck's attention for himself. He wanted those wonderful blue eyes searching for him in the crowd, not staring at the girl's lips as he licked his fingers.

Jealousy whispered to Eddie to do something about it. To distract Buck, hooked into his thoughts and made him think only about Eddie when he talked to other people. But not just at this moment…

Eddie inhaled the smoke, tilting his head back a little and continuing to watch the pair through half-closed eyes. He was sick of watching Buck give himself away left and right. Raising money, being friendly with the community or whatever - meant shit. Eddie didn't care. He had enough of playing the nice guy and taking just scraps. He wanted Buck to yearn for him long after he’ll get back home.

Eddie kept his gaze locked on Buck as the latter apologized to the girl and began to walk away towards the back of the firehouse. In any other scenario, Eddie would have simply remained in Buck's orbit, content with casual conversations. He just liked spending time with him. However, all this flirty attitude triggered a reaction that sent Eddie on the prowl.

With a snap of his fingers, he threw away the cigarette butt and exhaled the last cloud of smoke from his lungs. Like a hunting animal, he stalked his prey... and when he cornered it, he locked the door behind him.

Buck soaped his hands, grimacing slightly. Normally, licking his fingers after eating was enough, but today he ate so much sweets that his tongue felt sticky and his saliva was as thick as honey. For a brief moment he wondered if Eddie would like this. And how would he taste… For some reason Buck thought about oranges with chilli and like that spicy-citrusy flavor would mix with the sweetness lingering in his mouth as Eddie would kiss him, leaving him breathless…

Buck glanced briefly at his reflection in the bathroom mirror, making sure his thoughts weren't showing on his face. He was getting better at controlling his reactions considering he couldn't stop thinking about Eddie since Tiger showed up at the firehouse… when he was so close and yet out of reach.

Buck didn't expect the two of them to be that busy but he enjoyed every little interaction they shared. Either Eddie stopping his chore to join the tour for kids, which in a way was absolutely disarming, or just smiling at each other from across the room. Or watching Tiger dance.

Every time Buck took his place by the dancing booth, he secretly hoped Eddie would buy a dance with him, but the opportunity never came. He even was ready to pay for a dance with Eddie but then he realized Karen took all his cash. It probably was for the best, he wasn’t entirely sure Eddie would have liked that idea. Buck didn’t want to seem needy, didn’t want to take more than he was given, no matter how much he missed being in Tiger’s space. After all, Buck was the one initiating every encounter they had, Eddie only responded to his invitations.

Buck sighed, with the air leaving his lungs he was trying to get rid of the fear of being too much before it would settle itself with tightness in his throat. He heard the door open behind him, so he looked in the mirror to check who it was.

The universe had a pesky habit of mocking Buck. Or torture him. This was still to be determined.

Buck raised his eyebrows slightly at the sight of Eddie entering the bathroom. He couldn't help but to throw Tiger’s own line back at him.

“We should stop running into each other like this.” Buck calmly rinsed his hands and, looking at Eddie's reflection, he smiled cheekily, lifting his chin triumphantly because this time the line was appropriate.

But Eddie didn't answer him. With an unreadable smile he simply stood by the door, moving his gaze over Buck’s body.

There was something predatory in the way Eddie looked at him, in the way he moved, approaching him swiftly in a few steps. Buck gulped and felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up in excitement as he saw the dangerous glint in Tiger's eyes.

It was the only reaction he had time to make, he didn't even have a chance to turn towards him. Eddie was behind him in a flash, placing his hands on either side of Buck, trapping him between himself and the sink.

Buck instinctively pushed against Eddie. Not in defense but to feel more of him on his back. Eddie nuzzled his neck in response. If he wasn’t so close, Buck wouldn't have heard the low guttural growl Tiger made. He saw his reflection in the mirror. Closed eyes and a satisfied smile, as if he had finally gotten the delicious snack he had been waiting for far too long.

Almost like in confirmation to this thought, Eddie slowly licked his lips. Buck felt his knees go weak as it hit him - he was the snack Tiger waited to treat himself with.

Buck slid down a little, resting most of his weight on Eddie. His sigh caused Tiger to bare his teeth in a wicked smile. He looked like he was going to bite him but Buck could only feel his hot breath on naked skin as Eddie spoke in a deep voice.

“You’ve got my attention.”

The way Eddie said it sent a shiver down Buck's spine. He had no idea what had provoked Eddie to behave like this but he liked it very much and was eagerly waiting for more.

It suddenly dawned on him that Eddie was fully aware Buck could see everything in the mirror. But Buck didn't want this to turn into simple banter, he didn't want to give Eddie a chance to only tease him and then pull away.

Tilting his head encouragingly, Buck grabbed him by the back of his neck. Eddie's skin was pleasantly warm under his damp fingers; something he couldn't feel through the layers of clothes between them.

Tiger reacted with a need Buck hadn't expected. Eddie's hands were on his body, fingers impatiently slipping into the loose space between the buttons of his shirt, soft lips pressed against his neck, the hot tongue between them hungrily licking the taste from his skin. Buck felt Eddie's chest expand against his back as he took deeper breaths.

For a moment Buck saw and felt the passion in Eddie’s gestures. It mirrored his own, the same need for more reflected in the shiny surface in front of him. The desire in Eddie’s touch, so fiery like he was trying to leave burning marks on Buck’s skin.

But it was just a moment that dispersed with a low purr and playful smile against Buck’s neck. This damn smile that spelled mischief.

“Is it the uniform?” Buck asked jokingly but he really needed to know what prompted Eddie to jump him out of nowhere like that - so he could use this knowledge to receive that kind of treatment more often.

“Heh… no,” Tiger chuffed softly, “I like you better in your turnout gear.”

“Really?” He didn’t expect that answer but it pleased him greatly which was audible in his perky voice.

Buck flashed a toothy smile when Eddie finally looked up at him in the mirror. Tiger’s face conveying a semi-innocent expression ‘can you blame me?’

“Is it still working?” Buck was still trying to figure out if that string was playing the melody that had caught Eddie's attention.

“You tell me,” was the only vague verbal response he got.

Eddie spread out his fingers, straining the material and causing the button to open so he could slip his hand deeper. He started to tease him, tracing the aureola of his nipple in circular motion. Tiger's other hand tugged lightly at the fabric of Buck's shirt above the belt, making its way to his belly.

Buck closed his eyes and bit his lip. Eddie’s caress was wandering over his body. The gentle brush of short nails, full hand squeeze on the side, just below the ribs, slowly traced line from the navel further down. Buck focused on the sensations, however, every touch ended too soon, leaving him aching for more. But the teasing and anticipation was only turning him on. His breath was uneven and his skin hot with the blood rushing through his body.

Buck unconsciously began to squirm, pressing harder against Eddie's hands, trying to get his touch where he wanted it the most. On his neglected hardened bud, beneath the waistband, on soft, vulnerable underbelly.

He looked in the mirror again. His flushed face gave it all away.

Eddie was watching him with a smug smile when his feathery touch turned into a more aggressive one. He scratched the dip at Buck's hip, causing his abdominal muscles to quiver. At the same time Eddie dug his fingers in Buck’s pectoral, pressing his thumb hard against his nipple.

Buck arched like a taut string in Eddie's hands, resting his head on Eddie's shoulder and pulling him closer by the scruff of his neck. Tiger didn't resist, resuming his caresses, this time with more teeth than tongue. His hot breath betrayed an amused smile as a long moan escaped Buck’s parted lips.

“You’re too sweet, Sunshine.”

Everything Eddie was doing caused more excitement down south of Buck’s body. It didn’t bother him until now, with the pet name invoked… Now Buck wanted to be good, to be praised, to get more attention, to hear…

Some voices behind the door made Buck yelp and push himself against Eddie in an instinct to hide. Sudden reminder of where they were caused common sense to suggest to him it wasn't a good idea to continue. Bobby had already fired him once for something similar.

But it felt so good being in Eddie’s space again. A volatile mixture between feeling safe in a situation controlled by Eddie and the dangerous vibe of his wolfish demeanor.

“When I invited you I didn't have this in mind.” Buck said lightly, fooling himself that he tried to be responsible. He even grabbed Eddie's wrists, but didn't pull his hands away. Common sense without conviction was no more than an insignificant whisper in a rivalry with his want for staying in Eddie’s warm embrace.

“Then tell me to stop.” Tiger bit Buck’s earlobe in a familiar way and it felt almost like a revenge for his bratty behavior back on Lucy’s couch. Almost, because there was no teasing in Eddie’s sensuous tone. Only the desire, promising to coat Buck with a smooth layer of pleasure.

He wanted Eddie so badly, to feel his heat, hear his voice. He needed Eddie to keep touching him.

What little hesitation Buck had just melted away as he guided Eddie’s hand lower, under the belt of his pants.

“No. Please, don’t stop.” The desperation crept between his words and he found himself feverishly unbuckling his pants. This wasn’t a situation where they could indulge themselves with longer foreplay and yet it clearly showed how much they both wanted to make the most of it.

Eddie slid his hand underneath Buck’s boxers, not waiting for Buck to give him more access. He curled his long fingers around Buck’s erection and stroked him in a few dragging motions. Buck was ready for this, so he controlled his moans, letting out only a sigh of relief. What he wasn’t ready for, was Eddie sliding his hand even lower to Buck’s sack and putting nice, pleasurable pressure on his balls while simultaneously massaging the spot a little behind them.

Buck only managed to free himself from the material before he tensed up again against Eddie’s body.

“Fuck! Edd…” This time his loud moan wasn’t stifled by his self control but by Eddie’s hand covering his mouth.

“I love the sounds you’re making, Sunshine, but I don’t want anybody else to hear you.”

There was something in Eddie’s voice that made Buck’s heart pound harder in his chest. It was like a mask had slipped a little, revealing not the carefulness required in this situation but the inability to share. “So keep it down.”

But Buck didn't have a moment to think about it any further, as Eddie moved his hand to his neck, squeezing it lightly and resuming his deeds between his legs. Buck tried to minimize the sounds he made. The tilted head and the stretched out throat helped and hindered at the same time, because the sight of himself in the mirror only turned him on more. Tousled and blushing, with those wonderful fingers spread wide and clearly visible against his pink skin. In addition, the feeling that those same fingers caused in a wonderful stimulation on the sweet, hidden part of his body. All of this made Buck feel his own wetness on abdomen as his dick began to leak and ache for attention.

There was no shred of coherent thought in his mind. The sensations that Eddie was giving him dominated Buck’s body. He clutched Eddie’s forearm in an attempt to balance himself because his knees threatened to give way as he felt pulsating waves going through his legs every time Eddie put more pressure with his whole hand. Buck felt dizzy from the quick, heaving breaths he was drawing. From being on Tiger’s mercy.

“Talk to me, Sunshine.” Eddie asked at the same moment as he started to spread the pre-come along the length of Buck’s stiff erection.

But Buck couldn’t comply, his voice trapped in his throat by greedy gulps of air and his mind set up only to inhale as Eddie kept rubbing his thumb over the head of Buck’s dick. He could swear he felt the tension of his vocal cords as he let out a weak, strained “ please ”.

“Oh Sunshine,” Tiger clicked his tongue in amusement. “I’m disappointed, you were so talkative over the phone. You couldn’t shut up.”

Eddie’s hand movement began to be more intentional. He was building up a pace, matching it to the rhythm of Buck’s hips seeking his touch. Eddie didn’t tease his body as much as he could, he was aiming for Buck’s satisfaction. Yet at the same time he toyed with him, giving him a task only to set him up for failure. And the little humiliation behind the comment was sweetened by Eddie’s soft voice and sharp scratch of his short stubble as he rubbed his chin against Buck’s bare skin.

The mixture of distress and excitement made Buck shiver as he tried to sink deeper into Eddie’s body behind him. He wanted to be good, he wanted to please Eddie, to deserve his attention and every amazing thing Eddie was doing to him.

Even though Buck was panting like crazy he tried his best to reply.

“I wanted to give you… a good time… and was limited… to my voice.” He said with a little dose of embarrassment as he shot a timid smile to Eddie’s reflection in the mirror.

“You’re pretty limited now.” Tiger smiled back but as soon as Buck let out a wretched whimper, Eddie hushed him softly. “Shhh, you gave me a wonderful time, Sunshine.” He whispered soothingly against Buck’s ear, “Let me reward you like you deserve.”

Eddie’s grip tightened and as he kept the pace he started to stimulate the head with every other stroke. The urgency of the situation didn’t show in Eddie’s movements. The motion was steady and deliberate, focused on Buck’s pleasure, not simply rushing him through it. Buck tried very hard to keep down his moans because the rhythm was just right to make his body tingle in all the right places.

“Now… I know you can hold it, you made me very proud.” Tiger said in a praising tone. “But I wonder… how fast can you come under pressure? Knowing that I want you to, knowing that someone may walk on us…” There was a hint of excitement in Eddie’s voice.

Normally Buck wouldn't need much, he was turned on enough to submit to Eddie’s pace or just hold him by the wrist and fuck madly into his amazing hand. But the threat of someone catching them had settled heavy in his mind and threw him off a little. He wasn’t shy when it came to sex in public places but it wasn’t his thing. Especially not here… but Eddie… he seemed to enjoy this adrenaline rush and his thrill partially contributed to Buck’s arousal.

It wasn’t enough though to wipe the unpleasant blockade completely. Even as Eddie pumped him more vigorously, even as he covered Buck’s mouth to quiet down his cries and moans.

Buck tensed his muscles, licked the palm of Eddie's hand needily, scratched his neck and dug his fingers on Tiger’s forearm, desperately trying to induce a state from which he could reach a peak, but he couldn't turn his mind off. The distress of failing and being bad was becoming louder, and Buck had to close his eyes as he felt the sting of tears in them.

Suddenly Eddie slowed down the pace drastically. He grabbed Buck’s chin and forced him to face the mirror.

“Look at you, Sunshine, what a breathtaking sight you are.” He purred with his lips behind Buck’s ear. Tiger’s eyes followed the path on Buck’s reflection as he kept talking. “All flushed and disheveled, with messy hair and parted lips. Your skin pink where I touched you, wet and shiny from my tongue.” He licked Buck’s neck and ended the motion with a soft kiss accompanied by a satisfied sound.

“Eddie…” Buck’s voice was weak and tremulous. Tiger kept playing with his dick almost lazily and Buck melted into this sensation. His blue eyes glued to Eddie’s reflection, taking in the handsome smile and spark of fascination in his gaze as he was describing what he was seeing.

“Your gorgeous eyes, glassy and unfocused. Your full lips darkened from rubbing against my hand. Fuck… and you’re like this because of me… panting and moaning… saying my name… so good to me…”

Buck's mind submitted to Eddie's words, to low vibrations of his mesmerizing voice. Nothing else was important, only the sensations Tiger was giving him. Only the raw want in those dark eyes.

Buck felt his orgasm approaching, his body trembling with tension. All he needed was a little push, "Eddie..." he whimpered Tiger’s name pleadingly.

The grip around Buck’s dick tightened and the pace quickened as Eddie pressed his body against Buck and brought his lips to his ear again.

“I can’t get enough of you, Sunshine.” The craving in those words, so tangible and intense, sent Buck right over the edge.

And the moment the first wave spilled on his skin Buck heard the rattling of the doorknob and Chim’s voice yelling at him:

“Buck! Hurry up!”

Buck let out a tortured whimper because the orgasm escaped him completely right before he could taste it. He barely registered the frustration before it was replaced by humiliation as his body continued to react violently, covering Eddie’s hand with his mess. The blood roared in his ears and his body convulsed uncontrollably but every spasm that ran through him didn’t bring usual relief.

With a bit of shame Buck tried to focus his tearful eyes on Eddie's reflection in the smooth surface in front of him. What he saw made his brain short circuit, suspending him in this strange zone of something simultaneously blissful and exciting, because the dark eyes were watching him with adoration from under long eyelashes.

Eddie wasn’t disappointed, his desire had not diminished and his attention was solely on Buck like he was trying to remember every detail he could see in the mirror.

His own long moan of pleasure startled Buck. What he was experiencing, suddenly became incredibly hot and emotionally intense but at the same time liberated from any expectations. Because Eddie didn’t pity him or saw this as failure, quite the opposite, he was taking in the sight like he was admiring a piece of art and it made Buck feel wonderful.

“You amaze me, Sunshine.” Eddie placed a sweet kiss on his neck. “You’re enjoying it, aren't you?” There was a pinch of amusement in his lilting voice.

Buck’s thighs twitched and hips jerked on its own. He looked away in embarrassment, realizing his mindframe hadn’t really changed, he was still turned on despite the ruined orgasm.

“Don’t shy away.” Eddie was soothingly stroking Buck’s lower abdomen, spreading his semen all over it, which only made Buck more horny. “Let me have a little more of you.”

Buck took it as a permission and with a needy whine he turned a little to the side so he could tuck his head under Tiger’s chin. He curled his fingers on Eddie’s henley, crumpling the dark material. Eddie tensed up a bit but didn’t push him away. With a light chuckle he ran fingers through Buck’s hair in an easing gesture.

Although it wasn’t closeness or comfort that Buck was seeking, he sank into it gratefully. He was still attuned to playtime, with dirty thoughts running loosely in his mind. He wanted to slid down to his knees to suck Eddie dry or for Tiger to just bend him over and fuck him hard.

But at the same time Buck felt warm and safe and protected, and he was happy with Eddie’s calming touch. So as Buck’s breath even out, matching the rhythm of Eddie’s slowly rising and falling chest, his body relaxed and his mind ease out.

Maybe a minute had passed before he began to notice the noises outside. Even though he knew that by speaking up he would burst the bubble they were in, causing Tiger to distance himself again, it was time to get back to reality. He was already pushing the limits of his luck here.

“We should…” Buck swallowed and forced himself to remain still. He feared if he looked up in Eddie’s eyes he would do something stupid and reach for more - and he was only allowed to take what he was given.

“Yeah…” Eddie huffed softly into his hair.

To Buck’s surprise Tiger didn’t take a step back, didn’t break the physical contact, so Buck allowed Eddie to guide him. He turned Buck to face the sink again and keeping his hand on Buck’s lower back he reached for one of the fluffy towels. He soaked it in warm water and then gently cleaned up the mess from Buck’s sensitive skin.

“You’re pretty good at this.” Buck said this teasingly, otherwise he would blush and seek more into this gesture than what it actually was.

“Better than you,” Tiger shrugged, ”...which isn’t a high placed bar to be honest.”

Buck knew Eddie was hinting at his inept care from the other day at the scrapyard. And Buck would let it slide, he would, if not for this stupid grin on Eddie’s face. So he punched him lightly in the shoulder, pushing him away a bit.

“It was eating you to say it, ain’t it?”

Eddie staggered as he started to laugh. “Just make yourself decent, firefighter Buckley.” He threw a towel at Buck and turned to the other sink.

Buck pouted, barely able to hold back a smile; the sound of Eddie’s laughter was heartwarming. He was happy with how easily they moved back to familiar banter.

While Eddie washed his hands, Buck cleaned himself up. He buttoned his shirt and tucked it neatly into his pants. He made sure his belt was straight and there were no suspicious spots on his pants. He gave a critical smile to his reflection in the mirror before turning towards Eddie.

“Decent enough, right?”

“Turn around.”

Eddie adjusted the collar of Buck’s shirt and gently ran fingers through his hair. Suddenly he leaned over Buck's shoulder and placed a short sweet kiss on a hinge of his jaw, just below the ear.

“For luck.” Tiger whispered with a mischievous smile and without waiting for reaction he moved to the door.

The sound of the lock turning was like a bucket of cold water or the punchline to a particularly well-crafted prank. Eddie just walked out, without looking back. Buck was left alone, with his mouth hanging open, feeling the warm remnant of Eddie’s kiss under his fingers. He wasn't sure what stunned him more.

He exhaled a soft chuckle and shook his head. Feeling carefree and surprisingly light on his feet, he threw the towel to the laundry basket and without hurry he walked out of the bathroom.

“Finally!”

Lucy raised her gaze to Chimney as he ran towards the bathroom, but her attention was quickly drawn to someone else. Texas was heading her way, all relaxed and full of himself like a cat after a good nap. As he was passing Bobby, he looked at him briefly and this almost obnoxious smug appeared on his face. The captain only glanced at Eddie, his attention more focused on the kids asking him questions.

Lucy frowned, trying to figure out why she felt uneasy about this scene. And then, a few seconds later, she saw Buck. Crime solved - it was all over his face - like a cartoon character, floating inches above the ground, chasing after the smell of freshly baked pie.

She rolled her eyes and scoffed in amusement. Could they be more obvious?

That hit her with the alarm bells going off in her head.

She looked at Bobby and, calling upon any higher power willing to listen, she prayed that he wouldn’t notice Buck. Apparently she didn’t pray hard enough because Bobby not only noticed Buck but did a double take with that very distinctive line across the bridge of his nose. This wouldn't slide, not in his firehouse, not with Buck’s record.

Crap…

Lucy had to do something before their captain could connect the dots. She shoved Eddie's jacket into his hands and took him by the arm, leading him outside.

“Are you out of your mind? You want him to get in trouble?” She hissed in a low voice, giving him a scolding look.

Eddie simply put on his jacket and wiggled his eyebrows, which made Lucy roll her eyes. Sure, the situation was amusing - two teenagers fooling around under the father's nose - but the consequences could get more serious than being grounded or internet-banned.

She glanced inside the firehouse, but before she could locate Buck, she saw Bobby walking towards them. She grabbed Eddie by the tails of his jacket and pulled them behind the wall, out of the captain's line of sight.

“You have to go, because with that shit-eating grin still on your face Bobby will put the two and two together like that .” Lucy snapped her fingers emphasizing the statement.

“So what?”

Eddie turned his head like he didn't care and this only made it easier to smack him in the back of it.

“Now, Texas!”

Although Eddie’s attitude didn’t change he listened this time. He walked off towards her motorcycle.

Lucy pinched her cheeks to give them more color, ruffled her hair a bit and as she walked back inside she wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. She was hoping to literally bump into Bobby but her timing was a little off. Nonetheless he noticed and clearly read her fake heavy-making-out look. She flashed an innocent smile but ducked her head apologetically. Bobby only sighed, the lines on his face softened. Crisis averted.

Eddie was in a great mood.

His jealousy was still basking in the attention it received. Satiated and content, with a full belly, it moved its tongue from time to time, enjoying the taste that remained in its mouth.

Night Rod’s engine purred under him; the ride was pleasantly prolonging his high, easing it gradually to satisfying buzz.

Eddie had no plan when he followed Buck into the bathroom, just an urge to have him only to himself for a few moments. What quelled his hunger wasn’t an invitation in Buck’s submission, it was how he surrendered to Eddie. How he sought his touch, how he sunk into his body, how he reached for more, tightening his fingers on the back of Eddie’s neck to keep him close. And just like every other time Eddie focused solely on Buck, making this all about him, while simultaneously enjoying how much Buck wanted him.

Every hook up with Buck was different but each was loaded with desire Eddie had never known before. But could he really say that he experienced it when he was nothing more than an observer? He thought it was enough to just watch it and hear it. He thought he was safe.

Eddie was jumping from one encounter with Buck to another not really thinking about them in the meantime. Buck was like a cigarette break between the things he had to take care of - checking up with Ana Maria, work time, trying to figure out if anyone was looking for him. So Buck was just a little entertainment in his fucked up life. Except… it wasn’t exactly true.

Eddie was stuck in limbo without the slightest idea where he was going. The initial goal of simply surviving the next day no longer made sense. Just like repeating that he kept his distance because he didn't want to endanger anyone. He had set a certain plan, certain boundaries, and he believed he was sticking to them. He thought he separated Buck from everything else. He convinced himself he did.

The lines began to blur ever since they started texting every day. Buck became the constant in the midst of a mess that Eddie was in. He grounded him in a way Eddie wasn’t expecting, that’s why he missed it. He thought he was in control by not sharing too much about himself, there was no harm in talking about trivial stuff, but the things that Buck shared with him were the trap that Eddie entangled himself into. He was happy for Buck, proud of his wins and he liked him more with every little thing he learned about him. And of course they tease each other constantly, but beneath all that was the assurance they could count on one another, lying unspoken but solid and undeniable.

They had a connection from the start, Eddie was drawn to Buck in a way he didn’t understand. But that natural tether between them that was tying them together was raw and thin. Not knowingly they both coated it with the friendship they started to build from the first day. Adding layer after layer of laughter, and honesty, and jokes… because it was the little things and the emotions behind them that were making their bond stronger.

However, Eddie was a master of avoidance. There was no struggle. He didn’t hug a pillow at night wishing for it to be Buck. He would if he let his emotions reach him. And it wasn’t a denial either, there was nothing to deny from his point of view. He didn’t look at it, he didn’t think about it, ergo - it didn’t even exist.

But his emotions and feelings for Buck were real, waiting just beneath the surface. It was only a matter of time before they blew up and knocked him down on his knees.

But for now… Eddie was in a great mood. So great in fact, he didn’t even think when he shifted the gear and cranked the throttle, making the engine roar as he sped through intersection catching the last second of the green light.

Bradford had a crappy day.

He had spent the entire morning in court. If he had known that this one arrest would be so much work, he would have passed it on to someone else. Hoping that his favorite coffee would improve his mood, he had driven halfway across the city only to discover that the place was closed. On top of that he had scratched the car on a poorly marked high curb.

So his day sucked, and Chen, who was sitting in the passenger seat, trying very hard to hold back a smirk, was only making it worse.

Bradford was getting more irritated; traffic was moving unbearably slow and they didn’t have any call to get them out of it. There was also this annoying song that stuck in his mind. He was 5 seconds away from calling Lopez to give them any job, just so he could focus on something, when he heard a motorcycle blasting right beside them.

That did it.

“Why are we stopping him?” Chen asked with a bit of concern in her voice.

Tim didn’t reply, he just ordered “Check the plates,” as they were pulling behind the biker.

“Harley belongs to… Lucy Donato, was not reported stolen.” Chen replied, quickly scanning the information on the screen.

Bradford only nodded and exited the car. He assessed the biker as they were walking up to him. Guy turned off the engine and took off his helmet. He seemed relaxed, not looking at them - almost like he was just taking a break, not like he was being stopped by the police. But Tim noticed he was watching them carefully in his left mirror.

When Bradford was close enough to start the usual process, the man looked at him. The initial surprise on his face turned quickly into a cunning smile.

“Hey, Officer…” he snapped his fingers, “...Bradford, isn’t it?”

Tim needed a few seconds to recognize his face. The memory from a few days ago only made his jaw tighten.

The biker, however, noticed this because the annoying smile on his face only widened when he added, “You remember, I’m touched.”

“Not enough to remember your name.” The retort escaped Bradford before he bit it.

“Give it time.”

Tim ignored this comment.

“License and registration.”

The man chuckled in amusement and without any hurry he reached into his jacket. “Let me guess, you pulled the plates…” He glanced at Lucy who was a few steps behind, keeping a keen eye on him. “Latino cruisin on a Harley he doesn’t own in the middle of the day, no gang tats, no patch… suspicious…”

“I wouldn’t call it cruisin.” Bradford wasn’t going to fall for such low and weak provocation but Lucy asked almost at the same time as he did.

“Is that a confession?”
The man shot her a charming smile over the shoulder and then turned back to Bradford. He handed him the documents with the same smug expression.

Tim’s irritation started boiling again. The guy was having too much fun, clearly poking into their previous encounter which now Bradford remembered in too many details. And this fucking song was still drilling into his head.

“Well… Search him, boot.” He barked at Lucy, making a little hustling movement with his head.

Judging by her face she finally understood the man played her and now she regretted opening her mouth. Sometimes it was way too easy to read her.

Chen cleared her throat and spoke up with more confidence. “Sir, step away from the vehicle, please.”

Bradford watched the biker carefully but to his surprise he didn’t try to take any advantage of the fact that he was approached by a definitely smaller woman. He was at his best behavior, complying without a hitch, but keeping that annoying half-smile and his eyes on Bradford the whole time.

“Keeping things professional…” the biker clicked his tongue in amusement, “...I see.”

Tim didn’t want to give him any satisfaction so he focused his attention on the documents he held.

“Is that a baton in your pocket

Or are you just happy to see me?...”

Edmundo Diaz, that was the guy's name and…

“...And he looks like he wants to chase me

Cop cuties, cute and on duty…”

Why the hell was he still hearing that stupid song?!

“...Arrest me but make it sexy…”

“Catchy” Diaz winked at him and at this moment Bradford knew the song was not playing in his head. It was coming from their car.

“S-sorry, sir.” Chen was visibly embarrassed and tried very hard not to look at Tim. The whole situation looked even more pathetic as Lucy hesitated, taking a step towards the police car and then back towards the man, unable to decide whether to continue searching Diaz or run to the car for her phone, which was still ringing with that annoying song. “He… he’s clear, sir.” She announced, adjusting her hair nervously just to cover her face with her hand as she walked away towards the car.

There was a lack of certainty in her voice, which Diaz picked up on easily.

“You may have to check yourself after all.” Biker opened his jacket. “Where you wanna do it? Wall? Or the hood of your car?”

That punchable grin was getting on Bradford’s nerves, but he was not about to be provoked. He also didn’t feel awkward. The embarrassment during their previous meeting was mainly due to the behavior of Diaz's friend. The situation now was different and Tim was perfectly aware that Diaz wasn’t really hitting on him, he was just having fun at his expense. And the vexing thing was - he was good at it.

Despite his body language and seemingly careless behavior, he was choosing his words deliberately, leaving too much space for interpretation. Bradford couldn’t do anything about the double meaning and Diaz knew this.

Just like he knew they didn't have a solid reason to stop him or give him a ticket.

The only move Bradford had left to make something out of this situation and save his face was to let Chen take the lead. She would see this as one of his tests and keep herself sharp for the rest of the shift.

It would have been a win if Diaz hadn't started humming.

“Mhhmhm-hmm… awesome song, a real earworm, isn’t it?”

Bradford chewed the inside of his cheek and narrowed his eyes. This guy was very close to becoming his personal project.

With very strained self control Tim turned his attention to Lucy, who stopped two steps away from him, with a very remorseful expression on her face. “You done?”

“Yes, sir. Sorry, sir.” She kept her head down but managed to hold his gaze.

Bradford only nodded his head, pointing at Diaz. “Proceed, boot.”

He saw Lucy’s confusion but she didn’t hesitate, immediately taking a step forward.

“Sir, we stopped you because…” She looked at Bradford like she was trying to guess what he was expecting of her, but then something shifted and her posture became more confident. When she spoke up again there was a healthy dose of authority in her voice. “You should match your speed to the maneuvers. Driving between lines is permitted, of course, but should be performed with full attention and carefully. Making a green light is not as important as safety. Please remember that in future.”

“Yes, ma’am, I will.” Diaz replied politely, no shred of his previous attitude.

“Thank you, you’re free to go.”

With an approving wave from Chen, Diaz mounted the motorcycle. He looked at Bradford, only slightly raising his eyebrow.

Tim handed back his documents. “Have a good day Mr Diaz” The smug that was barely playing at the corners of the biker's lips widened as soon as he heard his name. Bradford scoffed, “Don’t get excited, I’ll forget it by the end of my shift.”

“It’s fine…” Diaz put the helmet on and started an engine, “You’ll scream it eventually.” He winked and drove off before Tim could react.

With full intention to make their next encounter as miserable as possible for this guy, Bradford committed Diaz's name to his memory.

Few hours later, as they were ending their shift, Lucy stopped Bradford at the parking lot.

“Remember that biker? I had a feeling I saw him somewhere.”

She handed Tim her phone. On a screen was a video from a bar. Diaz was twisting some guy's arm and his friend was helping a girl who was clearly heavily intoxicated. A moment later the guy broke free and both of them ran after him.

Bradford watched the video again, paying more attention to it. His personal project just got a bit more interesting.

"Fortyyy eight... Fortyyy nineee... come on! Fifty!"

With a loud grunt of relief, Buck rolled onto his back. His chest was moving violently from deep breaths. His hair was sticking to his forehead like wet feathers and his skin was shiny with sweat. He didn't like doing push-ups, so he was always saving the final set for the end of his routine. It allowed him to sometimes give up those last fifty. It wasn't cheating if the excuse was good. But tonight he wanted to get more tired. He chased that exhaustion, unconsciously trying to adjust his body so he could normalize the state he was in.

The floor was uncomfortable and cold, but he had no strength to get up. Anyway, that wasn't what really bothered him. He still felt that unpleasant ice needle pressing stubbornly under his ribs.

Eddie did the same thing again - ended their meeting with a clean cut, and this time he disappeared without a word.

Sure, Lucy had explained to Buck that she was the one who told Eddie to go. Apparently they weren't very subtle , but still... that irksome feeling remained.

There was indisputable desire between him and Eddie, and the sex was more than fun but Buck couldn’t help to think that maybe he had pushed Eddie into this every time, because, well… Eddie always reacted, always was there for him, making sure Buck had a good time, matched his liking. He had no doubt that Eddie enjoyed it but… did they actually share the intimacy?

Buck closed his eyes, recalling the feeling of being in Eddie's arms today. His soothing touch, his warmth, the way Eddie buried his face in his hair… that short, sweet kiss… was it all just for Buck’s benefit? Or maybe…

Buck ran a hand over his face, letting out a pitiful groan.

He shouldn’t make up things that he would like to read between the lines.

Eddie had set clear boundaries and Buck should respect that. He already said he doesn't need anything more. Sure, he had some feelings but friendship with Eddie was more important. His emotions won't be a problem.

He won't ruin this.

Buck stared at the lightbulb high above his head. It seemed to glow brighter and brighter as the pictures started to twist and morph in his head.

Eddie sleeping by the side of his bed, by his jeep, on his couch as Buck held his head in his lap.

Eddie dancing with Lucy. Eddie fighting in the ring.

Eddie’s hands dirty with jam. Covered with blood.

Sharpness of his canines, softness of his lips.

Every shade of Eddie's eyes, the darkness of his desire, the soft brown of his pain, molten embers of his wrath and sunlit amber of happiness and laughter.

The shape of Eddie’s smile… His touch…

The buzzing of the lightbulb became so loud it vibrated around Buck.

His thoughts were cut abruptly as his senses sharpened and his mind separated the sensations, making him realize the louder buzzing was actually the notification of an unread message.

As soon as he saw Eddie's name on the screen, Buck immediately rolled over onto his stomach, supporting his upper body on his elbows. He had no idea he started grinning like a teenager before he even opened the message.

"My first night shift and I already cracked the case of a mysterious ghost haunting the place."

Below the text were three blurry photos. Eddie definitely wasn't familiar with the night mode. Buck was looking for a ghost. He turned his phone to the side, zoomed-in the pictures, turned the phone again… He was really trying to figure out what he was supposed to see. There was something small in the middle of one of the photos, between a pile of junk and the row of old washing machines. It was a cat… or rat… probably… actually it could also be a shoe.

Buck smiled fondly. Eddie was really bad at taking photos. Seriously, it was a tragedy and a sign for intervention.

He was going to ask about the ghost when suddenly he received another message. This one contained a video. Buck played it immediately.

The camera cautiously approached the pile of scrap metal. After a while, it moved lower to the ground, which suggested that Eddie was crouching. A second later, Buck saw Eddie's hand slowly lifting a piece of rusty metal. Darkness belched from the opening, and Buck felt a thrill of excitement as the camera began to close in on it. For a moment the image was very blurry, Buck could only see a few small lights, but as soon as the camera focused, Buck realized that they were not lights but eyes. From among unrecognizable pieces of junk three frightened little foxes were looking at him.

Buck made an awe sound, enjoying the fluffy heads for a few more seconds before the video ended.

Another text from Eddie was waiting for him.

"I saw their mother earlier. I'm thinking about calling for someone who could relocate them. It's not safe for them to play here. It's not exactly an emergency but maybe my favourite firefighter has some advice who should I call?"

Buck knew exactly how to help Eddie, he had the right numbers saved in his phone. He was completely focused on the task at hand and didn't even notice the pleasant warmth spreading throughout his body. He sent Eddie contact details for the shelter where he volunteered and for an organization that helped wild animals in Los Angeles.

"Thanks! I'll keep you updated."

Buck tapped the heart emoji and hit ‘send’. The discomfort of the floor no longer bothered him, and the cold that jabbed at his side disappeared without a trace. He was swinging his legs cheerfully, looking at Eddie’s name on his screen, not really wanting to close the conversation. He rested his chin on his hand and lazily began to trace the edge of the phone with his finger. The affectionate smile was playing on his lips. He was happy, with this silly tune playing in his head and that funny flutter in his…

As if electrocuted, in a fraction of a second Buck sat upright. The realization jolted through him, knocking the breath out of his lungs.

He didn't have some feelings for Eddie - he was in love with him.

Like head over heels, tasting colors and seeing music in love.

With all of him. With his smile and his voice, and his anger, and wildness. With his confidence and pain behind his eyes, and that little beauty mark and his tattoos. Buck loved every small detail, all of them together.

He loved how Eddie looked at him, like he saw Buck just the way he was and wouldn’t change a thing about him. How he listened to Buck’s ramblings, genuinely interested with what he was saying, invested in conversation not just entertaining Buck’s need for attention. He loved that he could be himself around Eddie, like every quirk and kink were simply a natural part of him, not something he should be ashamed or get rid of. Eddie made him feel safe, seen and appreciated.

But above all he loved that Eddie felt free around him - allowing Buck to know him a little bit more every day.

Buck exhaled slowly, letting the thought sink in, but he grasped its meaning only when he whispered:

“I’m in love with him.”

The next breath came lightly like a gentle spring breeze. It was as if he had been wearing a diving mask on his face and though he had constant access to oxygen, only now he learned what breathing the air felt like. Saying this out loud freed him from shackles he had put on himself over a week ago. The night that Eddie left.

Buck just realized he was in love back then, when he collected all the little pieces of that night - he was keeping them stored in a wooden box at the bottom of his nightstand, wrapped safely in black boxing tapes.

That night had paralyzed him. He didn’t want to lose Eddie and it seemed easier to just follow his lead, while remaining passive and blind to his own feelings.

But it was so clear to him now. He fell into this pattern - from enjoying Eddie's company to feeling overwhelmed with need. So just like in the first week when they masked the growing fondness behind banter, they started to hide behind sex, they shared intimacy under the cover of carnal pleasure.

The thing was, Buck could do all the gestures of closeness without getting attached and deep feelings involved. He could turn a one night stand into a weekend in bed, filled with wild sex and pillow talks, and everything in-between - and still keep things casual. Never exchange the numbers, never meet the person again. But with Eddie it was different, and now he understood why.

Buck knew Eddie. Even though they’ve met like… what? Two-three weeks ago? Even though he had no idea how old Eddie was or what his full name was, he knew him.

Eddie’s gestures were louder than words, and the loudest ones were there all along - written into the absence.

Eddie’s reluctance to be touched, him never reaching for a kiss, him only reacting to Buck’s invitations, and always running away after…

At first glance it all looked like unspoken boundaries, drawn to let Buck know it was nothing more but casual fun. But on a closer look their meaning had changed entirely. It was more self preservation, when Buck viewed it through his own action. Because if they were to kiss, Buck wouldn't be able to stop himself and hide his feelings… and Eddie would know.

Buck closed his eyes and touched his jaw, just below the ear, where Eddie placed that gentle little kiss. He recalled Eddie’s warm skin under his fingers. How relaxed Eddie was with Buck in his arms.

And Buck couldn’t help but wonder that maybe the lines they had both drawn had already been crossed.

Few things about this chapter:
- Lloyd's is the name of the bar where 118 likes to go to unwind (the one with karaoke from chapter 14)
- I don't know anything about US traffic laws, I based the scene on how it would go in my country
- The video of Buck and Eddie from the bar is from chapter 8
- and if you're a Rookie fan, just to clear things out, I use the characters but I don't follow the canon timeline of the show
- the song used in this chapter is from Rookie, title -> "Daddy Cop"

This chapter turned out mostly as self indulgent fan service ^^'' but I needed to set up a few things and I think all pieces are on the board now so I can advance the plot...
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this one. As always, kudos and comments are greatly appreciated <3
