Work Text:
‘Hello?’ Kevin’s voice preceded him around the corner.
‘Binnie!’ David exclaimed, looking relieved
‘Hi sweetheart.’ Kayleigh said in his general direction, still blindfolded.
‘Hi guys.’ Kevin, made his way down the steps into the garden. ‘What’s going on?’
Before anyone could answer the question, Seth followed him out the back door, before freezing on the decking.
‘Oh I don’t know, some game. Your father won’t let me take this dumb blindfold off.’
As Kayleigh spoke to her son, David and Seth stood staring at each other in confusion across the garden.
‘David?’ Seth asked, disconcerted.
‘Is that him?’ Kayleigh whispered to kevin.
‘What are you doing here?’ David asked frowning.
‘What are you doing here?’ Seth shot back, finally making it down the steps.
‘Wait do you guys know each other?’ Kevin asked, confused.
What’s going on?’ David demanded, still staring at Seth.
‘What are you doing here?’ Seth asked again.
‘Hey Bin.’ Neil chimed in from where he and Robin were sitting at the patio table watching everything unfold.
‘Hey Neil.’ Kevin greeted him genuinely, if somewhat bemused, as everyone but David turned to look at him.
‘Hi Binnie!’ Robin said, waving.
‘Hi cutie.’ Kevin smiled, still floundering.
‘Seth it’s so nice to meet you, I’ve heard so many wonderful things about you from Binnie.’ Kayleigh said warmly to a spot two feet to Seth’s left.
‘I’m sorry what’s a Binnie?’ Seth asked, looking somewhat desperately around the garden as if the answers to his questions were hiding in a flower bed.
‘I’m a Binnie. I couldn’t say Kevin when I was little.’ Kevin admitted distractedly before asking. ‘How do you know my dad?’
Seth’s eyes snapped to David, alarmed.
‘For some reason he couldn’t say the letter v at all.’ Kayleigh chimed in jovially, unable to read the mounting tension around her.
David dragged a hand over his face, clearly agitated, eyes boring into Seth. ‘M’kay. I’m having trouble understanding what’s going on right now.’
Seth looked like he’d seen a ghost as he exhaled a great gust of air, floundering.
Kevin glanced between them confused and anxious, before explaining. ‘Dad. This is Seth, my boyfriend.’
‘No it’s not.’ Came the immediate response.
Kevin faltered in the face of his fathers reaction and he said hesitantly, ‘I was bringing him over to meet mom?’
‘No. No, no, no, no.’ David said, shaking his head belligerently.
‘I want to see the boyfriend.’ Kayleigh complained. Reaching for the blindfold. ‘Can I take this thing off now’
‘I can’t breathe.’ Seth muttered, staring unseeingly off into space
Neil sat forward in his seat, observing the unfolding catastrophe, with unholy glee.
Snapping back to the present, Seth demanded ‘David, what are you doing with a son that’s grown up?’
‘I was seventeen. That’s why we had to get married so young.’ David gritted out, glaring at him.
‘That—is something you should have told me.’ Seth accused shifting uncomfortably
‘You never wanted me to talk about my children!’ David hissed.
‘Um, I’m gonna to go watch TV now.’ Robin said awkwardly, getting up from the table.
‘Yeah that’s fine, honey. Why don’t you go do that?’ David said, not taking his eyes off Seth.
‘Yeah. Can I come?’ Seth asked, desperately.
‘No.’ Robin said, looking at him funny before going back inside the house.
Seth watched his chance of escape go forlornly as Kevin started to catch up with the situation at hand.
‘So y-you guys like really know each other then.’ He said, pointing between his father and his boyfriend with increasing alarm.
‘Oh screw it, this is ridiculous.’ Kayleigh said, pulling off the blindfold. ‘Oh honey he’s really cute!’
‘No he’s not-’ David snapped but whatever else he was going to say was by the screaming form of Nicky hemmick rampaging across across the back garden from direction of the street, building up steam until he reached them.
‘You sick son of a bitch! He’s sixteen!’ Nicky screamed, taking a swing at David, connecting with his jaw.
‘What the fuck, Nicky?’ Andrew yelled, running to catch up with his cousin and grabbing Nicky’s arm as he pulled it back for another hit. ‘What are you talking about?’
‘I know, Andrew! I heard you.’ Nicky snapped, shaking him off.
‘Heard me when?’ Andrew asked frowning.
‘“Wymack, i know we’ve been spending more time together, and I’m pretty sure you feel the same way I do. I know the age difference is a thing but I don’t want to miss out on something great over something so arbitrary.” I know you’re in love with him!’
‘What?!’ David demanded, wide eyes horrified.
‘You’re in love with my dad?’ Neil asked, looking distraught as he watched the dawning horror on Andrew’s face.
Andrew’s eyes snapped to neil taking in his heartbroken expression. ‘Oh my god, no! I wasn’t talking about coach.’
Nicky drew up short, his rage replaced by confusion. ‘Kevin?’
‘What? No! Oh my god, ew. Not Kevin either.’
Seth snickered, warning Kevin’s elbow to his ribs.
Andrew turned to Neil. ‘I was talking about you, idiot.’
Neil blinked, before a shy smile stole across his face. ‘Really?’
Andrew rolled his eyes, ears turning pink. ‘Yeah.’
‘Wait a minute.’ Kevin said, desperately trying to catch up. ‘What is happening?’
‘That guy thought the sixteen year old was in love with your dad, but it turns out he has the hots for your little brother instead.’ Seth summarised helpfully.
‘Neil you’re fourteen. You’re too young to date.’ Kevin said frowning.
‘No I’m not. Shut up Kevin!’ Neil snapped, glaring at his brother. ‘Can we get back to why your boyfriend knows dad?’
Whatever Kevin was going to snap back, was interrupted by a stranger entering the garden.
‘I’m looking for kayleigh day?’ He said.
‘Who are you?’ Kevin asked, oblivious to the glare his father was directing at the man.
‘Tetsuji moriyama.’ The man said.
‘You’re Tetsuji Moriyama?’ Seth demanded, already removing his class ring and blindly handing the ring to a baffled Kevin.
‘Yes?’ Tetsuji said, looking puzzled.
‘Oh hell no.’ Seth said, slamming his fist into Tetsuji’s face.
Things devolved quickly from there, fists flying and people screaming and several neighbourhood dogs joining the chaos from their yards. Afterward when the police had arrived and straightened things out. Seth, David, Tetsuji and Nicky, who’d gotten involved in an attempt to keep the peace, we’re lined up on the garden wall holding ice packs to split lips and tissue to bleeding noses, getting scolded like naughty school children.
One of the officers said. ‘Given that it was a one time occurrence and emotions were running high, we’re going to let you off with a warning.’ He eyed them sternly. ‘But please. Next time keep it in the family folks.’
Seth tried desperately not to but a slightly hysterical sounding laugh bubbled up and escaped him. He immediately tried to muffle it with his bruised knuckles. It was just too funny though.
Without looking at him David muttered. ‘I’m going to kill you.’
The was the last straw and Seth dissolved into helpless giggles and David smacked him upside the head.
