A Match Into Water

Summary:

Kyouka feels insecure about her scars when choosing an outfit for her date with Momo. Luckily Momo loves her just as she is and is there to support her girlfriend and remind her how beautiful she is.

Kyouka couldn't ask for a better girlfriend.

Notes:

There is no actual mention of self-harm, but it is talked about scars that resulted from self-harm. It is not specified that they are the result of it, but it is implied. If that is in any way upsetting to you, please don't read this.

I apologize for any mistakes! I did not beta read this (I really should start doing that) and english is not my first language. I'm also not very happy with how this is formatted, but I didn't find a different way that I liked more, so this will have to do.

Anyways, have fun reading, I hope you'll enjoy this short story :)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Kyouka stared at herself in the mirror, debating whether she should put on a long sleeved top or not. She held up her arm, twisting it around and taking a look at her scars. She knew that she shouldn’t be ashamed of them, but sometimes it was hard not to be.
There were different sized scars littering all of her forearm, some pretty muched faded, others more visible and slightly raised. She sighed. Normally it wouldn’t bother her too much, and she also wore her school uniform without a problem, but this was different.

She didn’t want them to be visible for her date with Momo. She didn’t want her to see them and she didn’t want strangers to stare at her arms while walking past.
She had always hated that, but somehow it was always worse when she was out with Momo. Kyouka couldn’t exactly put her finger on why she felt that way, but she suspected it was because she actually cared about what Momo thought about her and was worried that some day she‘d realize how fucked up she actually was and leave.
Logically Kyouka new that that was very unlikely to happen, but fears can be little bitches sometimes.

A knock on the door ripped the girl out of her thoughts. ”Kyouka? Are you okey?“, it was Momo. ‘Shit, we were supposed to meet 10 minutes ago‘, Kyouka realized after looking at the alarmclock on her nightstand. “I‘m okey! I kept you waiting, I‘m a bit stuck on what to wear“, she called back. “Can I come in?“, her girlfriend asked, “Maybe I can help?“.

After a moment of debating Kyouka let her in. Momo gave her cheek a quick peck, resulting in her blushing a bit, “So, what were you thinking?“, she wanted to know. Kyouka shrugged, “I‘m quite happy with this outfit, I just wasn’t sure whether to put on a long sleeved top under or not“, she explained, subconsciously rubbing her arm.

Ofcourse Momo picked up on that, connecting the dots of what she was actually saying. “Love, there‘s nothing wrong with your scars“, she walked over to her Kyouka, taking her girlfriends hands into her own, “you don‘t need to cover them“.

Kyouka stayed silent, looking everywhere except her girlfriend. A soft sigh escaped Momo, it pained her to see her girlfriend so selfconcious. “Kyo, look at me“, Momo asked, but got no reaction. “Please“, she added, and after a moment Kyouka looked up at her. Momo offered her a small smile, realizing again how beautiful her girlfriend was. She just wished that Kyouka could see it too.

“Your scars are nothing to be ashamed of. I know there are people who stare at them, and I’m sorry for that, but they don‘t know anything about you. They don‘t know how strong you are. How wonderful. They stare because they don’t understand what you went through, because they don’t understand your struggles. But I know just how hard you fought, and how unbelievably strong you are. Your scars show that you survived. They are a part of you. A part of your life. And I know you see them as something ugly, but they’re not. You’re the most beautiful girl I‘ve ever seen, no matter if your scars a visible or not.“, Momo carefully raised their hands and turned them, before carefully kissing Kyoukas wrist, right over her scars.

Kyouka could feel tears burning in her eyes. Somehow she got the most wonderful girlfriend in the whole world. She didn’t knew how she did it, or how she’d ever deserve Momo, but she knew that she was the luckiest girl in the world for having her. Her words and her actions just confirmed it, and they caused a rollercoaster of emotions inside of Kyouka, that she had no hope of being able to express completely.

“How about we stay inside and watch a movie instead of going out?“, Momo suggested, a soft look in her eyes. Kyouka nodded, “That sounds great“, she agreed, voice thick with emotion.
Smiling Momo walked her over to her bed, sitting down next to her and wrapping a blanket about them. She then picked out Kyoukas favorite movie to watch, did Kyouka mention how much she loved Momo? Because she really, really, did.

The purple haired girl cuddled into Momos side, sighing in content when Momo put her arm around her and kissed her head. Her girlfriend really was the best.
They watched the movie in silence and Kyouka could feel herself slowly relaxing more with every minute, the negative feelings slipping away.

She looked up to Momo, murmuring a quite but sincere “Thank you“. The other girl looked down at her, smiling, “Always. And I meant everything I said. You‘re beautiful just the way you are“, she promised, kissing Kyoukas forehead.
The girl blushed, looking away again. Momo chuckled softly and patted her head, already used to Kyoukas shyness when it came to compliments.

They went back to watching the movie, the silence only broken once more about half an hour later by a soft whisper from Kyouka, “I love you“. Momo smiled, “I love you too“.

Kyoukas thoughts were hard to deal with sometimes, they‘d try to tear her down, to break her spirit, to get her to fail. But as long as she had Momo by her side, she‘d be alright. Kyouka was sure of that.

She really had the best girlfriend ever.

Notes:

Yes, this was inspired by the song "A Match Into Water" by Pierce The Veil.

To everyone out there who has scars, you are beautiful. Your scars do not define you, they do not lower your worth or change who you are as a person.
They show that you survived a tough time, and that is something you should be proud of. I know it can be hard to see that sometimes, and that's okey. Just remember that you're worth so much, and look beautiful, even with your scars.

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the story and have an amazing day/night :)

I'm always open for feedback and constructive criticism
