Work Text:
Sabine Wren walked listlessly through the quiet and foggy forest.
She didn’t see any purpose in this walk.
In fact, she no longer saw any purpose in her life.
Because in her life there will never be her dear friend.
Ezra Bridger.
She lost her last chance to find him.
The only clue that could bring the young man back from the unknown regions of the galaxy was destroyed by her mentor.
She shuddered when she remembered how, after defeating the dark padawan-girl, she ran to Ahsoka, who at that time was already fiercely fighting the Dark Jedi.
She immediately rushed at him with a bright green blade, but without blinking he simply threw her into the rock.
Pain pierced her skull and her vision began to fade into darkness.
The last thing she saw was how Ahsoka, also using the Force, pushed her opponent away and then...
Sabine's world has plunged into black...
She woke up already on Ahsoka’s ship and learned another heartbreaking news after the bombing of her world.
The map that could help find Ezra was destroyed by Ahsoka's blade.
Ahsoka also managed to throw Baylan Skoll into the ocean, and his padawan Shin Hati escaped with Morgan Elsbeth.
They, or rather only Ahsoka, managed to save the galaxy from a new threat in the form of Thrawn.
But this didn't bring any joy to Sabine.
What kind of joy could there be if Ezra remained forever in an unknown planet and would never return home...
Will never be able to see his home not under the occupation of the Empire...
Will never be able to reunite with Hera, Chopper, Zeb and will also never meet his younger brother Jasen...
And she will also never be able to hug him and admit what she tried so hard to hide...
Her crush on him...
Yes, a true crush on him...
Sabine always said that she sees Ezra as a brother and best friend, hell even Ezra himself said on his last recording, and yet...
At that very moment, long ago, Ezra sacrificed himself for everyone...
True romantic love flared up in bright colors in the young Mandalorian.
And the realization, that she would never be able to say to her Jedi, was as acute as the death of her entire family, her and other clans...
Ahsoka, to her surprise, tried to support her, saying that she was also sorry about what she did.
But the Togruta's last words seemed to add fuel to the fire of rage in Sabine's soul, which seemed to never go out.
"I know it's hard for you right now, but it's time to move on Sabine, maybe this all what happened is also for the best for you..."
At that moment Sabine wanted to explode with anger.
How could Ahsoka say that?!
Best for her?! That she has lost her love forever?!? How will this help her?!? In her taining or what?!
It was a rare case when Sabine really wanted to attack her master with screams and maybe even offensive language.
To say everything that was in her head...
But...
She didn't do it...
She was too exhausted for all this...
Besides, her outburst wouldn't have helped either her or Ahsoka, much less Ezra..
So she just nodded.
Then she said that she needed to clear her head.
And so now, after an hour or maybe more, the Mandalorian girl from the clan Wren and Ahsoka Tano’s padawan silently wandered through the orange leaves, among the sometimes bare trees.
However, Sabine soon reached the place where Ahsoka and Baylan fought for the last time.
And where on a small pedestal lay a map broken into two parts.
Just like the young woman's heart was...
Sighing, Sabine walked to the edge of the stone platform, looking blankly at the huge ocean.
The weather itself at that moment perfectly corresponded to the mood of the Mandalorian.
And now looking straight at the endless waters, Sabine began to think about her life way.
Her main goal was to find Ezra.
But now...what can she do in her life?
It is possible to continue training with Ahsoka and become a Jedi...
Except...she only did it for Ezra, not for her.
And all thoughts about further training left her head.
She didn't want it.
In fact...
She didn't want to be here anymore.
Not on this planet, not even on Lothal..
No, she no longer wanted to be among the living...
Simply because there was nothing else keeping her here.
Her family is dead...
Her and other Mandalorian clans disappeared in the flames of the Empire...
Her man, with whom she so wanted to reunite, remained forever in Unknown regions...
Of course she had Ahsoka, Hera, Jasen, Chopper and even she contacted Zeb a couple of times but...
She couldn't take it anymore.
The resentment towards Ahsoka for first abandoning her and then destroying the chance to bring Ezra home grew even stronger.
And she also couldn’t look Hera and Jasen in their eyes and say that she failed in her mission..
To tell the boy that his older brother will never come back..
And just continue to live as if nothing happened..
No...
She couldn't..
Then her brown eyes looked at the gray sky.
She remembered how when she was 17th she found then still 16th Ezra, who was looking at the space sky.
It was a week after he learned about the fate of his parents..
She remembered how tenderly she hugged him and said that she was sorry that this happened...
And then Ezra sadly smiled and thanked her...
He also said that, he knew that his parents were now in the Force and that they would always be with him in his heart...
Then, after a while, Kanan also joined the Force, saving her, Hera and Ezra...
Perhaps even Ezra himself, if he didn’t survive...
And now maybe...her family was there too...
And Sabine, after a minute of reflection, made a decision...
She has no reason to live anymore.
She just wanted to join the Force, where she would again see her mother, father, brother, Kanan and perhaps...even Ezra.
In a place where there is no suffering and only peace.
Where she won't lose anyone else.
And with these thoughts, she stepped aside and began to take off her armor.
She won't need it anymore.
After having taken off everything, she took her lightsaber in her hand.
Or rather Ezra's former lightsaber.
Gently stroking the metal handle with her thumb, she carefully placed the weapon on the pedestal.
Right between the two parts of the destroyed map.
And allowing a single tear to run down her cheek, Sabine quietly said those words that she never managed to say to Ezra in person...
"Ni kar'taylir gar darasuum, Ezra Bridger."
After these words, she turned away and approached the cliff a second time.
Then she took a deep breath, banishing the last notes of anxiety, closed her watery eyes...
And took a step forward...
---
Ahsoka Tano silently looked out the window of her ship.
Her arms were crossed on her chest and anyone who knew her for a very long time would have already understood that this was her typical pose.
At the moment, she was in deep thought about everything that happened.
About the map, Ezra, Baylan, Thrawn...and of course about Sabine.
After destroying the map and reporting this to her student, Sabine just nodded and left to "clear her head".
But Ahsoka wasn't stupid.
Even when Sabine didn't say anything about it, she felt like a bomb of all the negative emotions was burning inside her padawan.
Anger, pain, sadness, despair...
Sabine experienced the same emotions when she found out that her family was dead...
And now her emotions were repeated when Ahsoka destroyed the map..
Destroyed the last possible way to find Ezra..
Although it might seem that Ahsoka didn’t care about Ezra, but that wasn't.
Ahsoka herself was sad that she wouldn't keep the promise she told Ezra when they were running from the Emperor in the World Between Worlds.
"When we get back, come and find me!"
"I will!"
But, no matter how much it hurt her, she couldn't allow another war to devastate the galaxy...
Even if it means Ezra will never come back.
Unfortanatlly, her padawan thought differently..
Her attachment to Ezra didn't allow her to think with her head.
And this could be a fatal mistake for the entire galaxy.
She tried to cheer up Sabine, but then she said something she shouldn't have said.
That all what happened is also would be the best for her too.
At that moment, Ahsoka felt like the 14th girl, that she accidentally said something that she shouldn’t have.
Which In her time, this would have caused Anakin and Obi Wan to simply roll their eyes.
And of course, her words brought the opposite effect.
Yet, Ahsoka didn't want to hurt her Padawan.
In fact, the naive part of her hoped that after their mission, Sabine would let go of her attachment to Ezra and would only focus on her training to become the Jedi she could be.
But she was wrong.
And now by destroying the map, Ahsoka was sure that she might also have completely ruined her relationship with Sabine.
And she could blame only herself.
"Maybe you should talk to her." Hyuyang's voice pulled the Togruta out of her thoughts.
Ahsoka shook her head.
"I'm the last person she wants to see." She replied.
"Probably, but it also probably that Sabine still needs your support."
"I’ve already supported her enough that I’ve caused an ocean of negative emotions." Ahsoka said sarcastically.
"But if you apologize and say the words that Sabine deserves, at least you will feel better." Huyang remarked, continuing to check their ship.
Sighing, Ahsoka nodded and headed into the forest.
She still doubted that Sabine would want to listen to her..
But she had to at least try...
"Do or do not, there is no try!" The slightly impudent voice of her past sang.
Fine..
She will apologize to Sabine for her words and decision, and if Sabine wants, she will return her to Lothal and never disturb her again.
However, walking through the dark forest, Ahsoka’s head was pierced by a sharp pain.
Almost the same when Anakin joined Palpatine.
Leaning against a tree, Ahsoka at that moment realized that the very tiny Force connection between her and Sabine..
Disappeared...
And that meant nothing good.
"Sabine.." She whispered and rushed to where the weak presence of the young woman was still felt.
In a couple of minutes she reached the very platform where she defeated Baylan and destroyed the map.
But she didn't find Sabine there.
She only found her Mandalorian armor and lightsaber, which was located perfectly between two parts of the map.
And in the air, in a quiet echo, the last words of her student were heard:
"Ni kar'taylir gar darasuum, Ezra Bridger..."
Ahsoka Tano may have saved the galaxy from the Heir to the Empire in the person of Thrawn.
And yet, she also, in a sense, sacrificed two important people for this.
Ezra Bridger.
Liberator of Lothal, Specter 6 and Padawan of Kanan Jaruss.
And Sabine Wren.
Possibly the last warrior of the Mandalorian clan Wren, Specter 5..
And also her Padawan.
