Chapter Text
It was like she attracted bad luck where ever she went. Any place she frequently visited winds up in the news due to some freak disaster. And yet, somehow, she has never been injured in any of these incidents.
When her apartment burned down, with her and countless other residents inside, she came out unscathed like the flames were scared of her touch. She saw her neighbors stumble out of the burning building right behind her with singed hair and serious burns. Nothing about her would have given away that she just managed to survive a house fire that managed to burn down an entire building.
And almost a month later as she was getting situated to her new living situation an earthquake happened affecting only her workplace. Again, she was in the building as it happened and again she came out unharmed.
The only thing these incidents had in common was the shadowy figure she saw out of the corner of her eye when she finally escaped the destroyed buildings. The shadowy figure that she didn’t properly get to meet until the third incident.
Incident number three happened at her favorite restaurant. It’s like these freak disasters were purposely targeting her favorite places. But that’s impossible, right?
This time it was a flash flood. That again, only affected the building she was in. Except this time, she didn’t get that lucky. This time, she was about to drown and was seconds away from losing her life.
Just as she felt the consciousness slip away from her body, a figure started lifting her up and her head broke through the water. The same shadowy figure that had been at the previous two incidents.
The figure draped her arm around his shoulder and slowly dragged her to the side of the building. It was slow work, he wasn’t a particularly skilled swimmer but he was still physically fit enough to support the both of them.
He grabbed onto the wall and positioned her to be leaning across his back, so he could free a hand. With this hand, he withdrew a heavy knife wrapped in cloth from somewhere on his person.
He lifted it up with easy and slightly tapped it against the glass. Surprisingly, it shattered and the water rushed to escape from their confines, bringing the two of them out with it.
They landed hard on the concrete sidewalk, the figure taking a few second to breathe before turning to look at her unconscious body. He couldn’t see her chest rise and fall, or anything to signify she was alive.
He stood up, brushing his hands against his chest before realizing that it didn’t do much at all, he was completely soaked, head to toe. So instead he focused on the more urgent problem, the girl that he might have managed to save, if she was breathing.
He knelt down, right by her body, and starting to press hard against her chest in an attempt to do CPR. It couldn’t be that hard, right? So he continued to press down, in a rhythm, in an attempt to mimic breathing. Because that’s what CPR is, right?
She started to cough up water, which was a good sign, but other than that she was still motionless. Even so, he continued to press down, getting increasingly panicked. What if she doesn’t make it and he did all this for nothing? And what would happen to the curse that had attached itself to her?
He leaned forward, about to attempt mouth-to-mouth, as her eyes opened, making him in a more than awkward position.
She was met with the sight of a pretty good looking guy right in front of her. He had light brown hair that was longer than the average guy. His eyes were mesmerizing, the type of light brown to look beautiful in the sunlight.
“Tryna kiss an unconscious girl is really not awesome sauce man,” She blinked, wiping water from her face.
“That’s not.. I wasn’t trying to kiss you!” He looked away, flustered from her words.
“Whatever you say man, but thanks for saving me, I think?” She gave him a forced smile as she wrung out her hair and clothes.
“You’re welcome. You have some serious bad luck by the way,” He smiled at her back and stood up, wringing out his clothes too.
“Yeah, I’ve noticed. Third time something like this has happened to me,” She stayed sitting down, leaning back to look up at him against the glare of the sun.
“Listen, you have two choices. This ‘bad luck’ is actually something else. Something called a curse, basically a child’s idea of a monster. And I’ve tried getting rid of it, I really have, but it’s just way too attached to you. So you can either come with me willingly and live, or you don’t and I’d have to bring you in for execution.” He said, not meeting her eyes.
“Should’ve just let me to drown man. So basically either way you’re gonna kidnap me because of some so called ‘monster’? I call bullshit.” She had slowly inched away, probably planning to make a run for it.
“Just please come with me. I don’t wanna see such a pretty girl get killed.” He crouched down, extending a hand for her and offered a genuine smile.
“Doesn’t seem like I have a choice,” She took his hand and the two of them stood up. “But if you plan experimenting on me or any weird shit, I would rather die.”
He nods before swiftly knocking her out with a cloth from his pocket. After all, it wasn’t up to him whether she lived or died, he just didn’t want to chase after him.
Although, he really hopes she lived, it was true what he said about seeing a pretty girl getting killed.
