Chapter Text
“Endeavor. I would like to tell you something.”
Endeavor groaned. What did he want now? All Might put his son in a hospital! His son was in the ambulance right now. Endeavor wondered what All Might could possibly have to say to him in private.
“What do you want, All Might? Here to call my son a villain, again?”
All Might rubbed the sweat off of his face. “Endeavor. I wasn’t exaggerating when I told you that. Your son… if we weren’t there, things would have gotten a lot worse.”
Endeavor shook his head. “Stop acting like you had any idea what would happen. You never would have known.”
All Might put his hand on his neck. “I… your son would have become part of an organization. An anarchy. Along with… his friends.”
Endeavor shook his head. “Have you finally gone insane, All Might!?” All Might continued.
“A man named Shigaraki Tomura destroyed the world, so I had no choice but to go back in time using a friend’s quirk. She was only 6 when it happened, she’s supposed to be born in a few months. Your son went by Dabi. He ran away after gaining life-ruining scars all over him.”
Endeavor was appalled. “...Are you… insane?”
All Might shook his head. “The reason… I adopted Tenko was so I could prevent this from happening. He was Shigaraki Tomura. No… he wasn’t. He could have been.”
Endeavor was appalled. There was no way for him to be telling the truth, but he was so… specific… All Might had started acting differently all those years ago…
“Your son, Shuichi, Atsuhiro, Jin, Himiko, all of them could have joined the organization. But they're trying to be heroes, and I’m so, so proud of them… please. Treat Toya better.”
Endeavor sighed. “...Tell me more.”
“Good MORNING Endeavour! I am just ever-so excited about my VERY FIRST DAY at UA!”
Endeavor sighed. “I’m glad you're excited. Don’t push yourself.”
Ugh. Nice Endeavor was no fun. “I’ll push myself as much as you do, Endeavor!” Endeavor definitely knew what Toya was getting at. “Remember, you aren’t a hero yet, so you don’t have to put in 110% quite yet.”
Toya rolled his eyes. “Whatever you say. Did you follow the same rules when it came to parenting? You don’t have to put in 110% when you're just getting started?”
Endeavor coughed. “I hope you have a good first day.”
Toya shrugged. “I’m sure I will.”
And so, Toya entered the outdoors and approached the van taking him and his friends to the famous UA high school.
—
“You guys better tell me all about your first day!” Himiko grinned, waving Toya, Atsuhiro, and Shuichi out of Toshinori’s brand-new van.
“I’ll make sure to leave out as many details as possible.”
“You better not, Toya!”
Atsuhiro, Toya, and Jin walked out of the car through the school gates.
“It looks like… WE GOT THE SAME HOMEROOM! YES!” Jin grinned, looking at their schedules.
“Interesting.” Toya yawned. He wondered who his homeroom teacher would be. Preferably someone cool.
It was not someone cool.
Well, he didn’t seem particularly cool. Since he slept in a yellow sleeping bag.
“Who’s that? I’ve never seen him before.” Toya asked Atsuhiro. Atsuhiro shrugged. “I’m… not sure. I think he’s new.” Great. Toya got a brand new teacher with a sleeping bag.
“Alright, class. My name is Mr. Aizawa and this is my first year teaching, so I just want to make a few things clear.”
“First of all, none of you have come here to make friends, so if that's what’s most important for you you can head out the door now. I’m teaching the next generation of heroes, which is an incredibly dangerous career. If you're unworthy and get yourself hurt you won't be of use to anyone. You have to take this seriously.”
Well golly, Toya knew that from the start there was no need to spell it out for him. Maybe a good message for the other idiots in this classroom.
“That means you, Todoroki. Don’t think you can get away with burning yourself in my classroom.”
The class full of losers snickered at Toya’s misfortune.
That was so stupid! It wasn’t like Toya was lighting himself on fire, ON PURPOSE. This Mr. Aizawa should be freaking happy TOYA got in his class!
“Did you hear me well enough, Todoroki?”
“Whatever,” Toya grumbled. He would have screamed his retaliation if he didn’t care about his record. Being a UA problem child wasn’t a great look for agencies. Although If this BS kept up Toya didn’t think he would be able to contain himself.
Aizawa nodded. “Good. Well then, put on your PE uniforms, we’re going outside.” What? Outside? On the first day? Toya expected a bunch of soft little ‘this is why I wanna be a hero!’ speeches, although he should have known it would be something weird. This teacher made it very clear he wasn’t having that sort of thing.
“What do you think we’re doing?” Atsuhiro asked nervously. Toya shrugged. Hopefully, something that would actually help him in his career.
After changing and moving as a class to the outdoors, Aizawa got his news all ready. “Okay, so you kids aren’t all hero material, I can guess that from your performances at the entrance exam. You will be tested in what I call a Quirk Apprehension Test. You will be tested in 8 physical tests with your quirk, on a point system to gauge your potential as heroes. If you come in last, you're expelled. Any questions?”
Yes. Around 5 to be exact.
First of all, EXPELLED? On your FIRST DAY? Was he ALLOWED to do that?
Secondly, A TEST? On the first day of school? What? Wasn’t the ENTRANCE EXAM for gauging hero potential?
Thirdly, If he has everything set up, it means that he WAS allowed to do that. WHY?
Fourth, quirks were weird and diverse. To expel someone because their quirk didn’t meet the guidelines was SO WEIRD.
Lastly, what the hell?
Jin was the only one to raise his hand. “What if my quirk is weird? Like, non-physical, and it won’t help?”
Aizawa looked to the side gruffly. “I’ll be the one to determine that. Now, follow me for the ball throw.”
Stupid answer, but Toya took a deep breath in for the sake of his dream potentially being shattered if he opened his big fat mouth, and followed the tired teacher.
They were taken to a track that reminded Toya of a shot put track. Aizawa held up some sort of device. “You will take turns throwing the ball with your quirks, and I will measure it with this. Who wants to go first?”
Jin raised his hand and walked over to the track. Aizawa looked at his device. Jin looked nervous, and a bit confused, obviously trying to figure out how the hell he was supposed to throw the ball using his cloning quirk.
There was no way, so Jin took a deep breath and threw the ball normally.
“50 feet,” Aizawa muttered. “Next.”
A bunch of random kids came up next, some of them doing way worse than Jin, but most of them doing generally better.
“You two are all that are left, one of you come up.”
Atsuhiro gave a side glance at Toya, before walking up to the track. Atsuhiro grabbed the ball and compressed it into a marble. The lighter weight likely made it easier to chuck, but it didn’t help all that much.
“75 feet,” Aizawa said, before glancing at Toya. “Alright, Todoroki. You're up.” Toya groaned. The only thing he could do was try to get fire to propel the ball. Toya took a deep breath and rubbed his hands together. He grabbed the ball not-so-politely and got ready to throw.
He let his arm erupt into flames, the ball still clutched in his palm. He pulled his arm all the way back and threw with every ounce of strength he had inside of himself.
“55 feet.”
Well, the fire didn’t help at all.
“UGH! Why are you testing us on how far we can throw a freaking BALL?! When are we ever going to need to throw balls to stop a villain!?”
Aizawa glowered at him. “Calm down, Todoroki. I’m sure you want to stay at this school.” Toya groaned and shut up. Oh, how he was going to take his anger out on Endeavour later.
“We’re moving on to the next test.”
The rest of the tests sucked in a similar manner. Toya wasn’t even close to the bottom of the charts, but even farther away from the top, and that pretty much meant he might as well have gotten last (well, minus the possible expulsion.)
Last place DID get expelled, but honestly, he deserved it. Random kid who obviously hadn’t trained at all, probably just liked the idea of being a hero. That kid would never make it very far.
“Now, Todoroki. I know you didn’t get last, but I do want to warn you. If your quirk ends up getting you hurt, I won’t let you stay here, no matter what you have to say about it.” Toya glared at him.
“You know, you can always get a support item, I’m sure it would help. Class dismissed.”
How dare he say that?! As if Toya hadn’t been begging for one his entire life! I guess he could ask Toshinori…
Either way, the rest of Toya’s very first day of school was rather mundane, surprisingly. Toya ended up heading home feeling… weird.
The three boys sat on the sidewalk, waiting for Toshinori to come pick them up. “Today was pretty fun,” Atsuhiro said contently. Toya shrugged. “Definitely… unbelievable, that's for sure. A little disappointing, but still pretty incredible.”
Jin smiled. “We’re really doing this. It feels so surreal.”
Toya shrugged. He saw Toshinori’s van run down the street. “Well, we are. Now we’re going home. Toshinori’s here.”
Himiko’s blonde head hung out of one of the back windows, grinning with all her teeth (fangs included) “GUESS WHO WAS JUST AT UA!” She yelled.
Toya couldn’t help smiling a little bit as he jumped into Toshinori’s van. “Lemme think… Did Tenko skip a grade?” Tenko was playing on his 3ds like the little gamer he was. “I wish.”
Shuichi snatched Toya from behind. “Seriously, dude! How was it?” Jin laughed. “We have a weird teacher who expelled someone on the first day. Other than that It was everything I could have hoped for.”
Huh. What was that expression Toshinori was making? Shock? Confusion? Realization? Did Toshinori know who he was talking about?
“Um… what’s your teacher’s name?” Jin coughed. “I think it was Mr Aizawa.”
Toshinori’s face transformed into some breed of realization. “Oh.”
“Do you know him?” Tenko asked quizzically. Toshinori looked uncomfortable. “You see, I know him… or rather, I knew him… well, I don’t… Well, Aizawa’s a really good teacher, I hope you enjoy having him.”
Huh. Toshinori was flustered. Weird. Toya wondered where he knew him. It was honestly more surprising that not only did Toshinori know him, but Toshinori actually LIKED HIM. Maybe Toya had judged the scruffy hero too soon. Although Toya certainly wasn’t happy about certain comments directed towards him.
“He seemed… annoying.” Toya settled on. Toshinori laughed. “He’s certainly strict, but he cares for his students. He always has, I know he’ll care for you, too.”
Jin looked confused. “But… It’s his first year teaching.”
Tenko gave a side glance and skeptically glared at Toshinori. “How do you know that guy?” He asked. Toshinori shrugged. “I… he um… he taught someone I know very well. I suppose it was just his first year at UA. He was… known for expelling students.”
Huh. Toya supposed that made sense. I mean, he could have taught somewhere else, except… hold on…
There was NO WAY that guy was old enough to have taught someone Toshinori once knew without Tenko knowing. I mean, Tenko was his son, and he was 15, with Toshinori for 10 years. That meant Aizawa would have to be around 34 at the very least, and he didn’t look a day over 25.
…Toya would have to ask what his secret was some time.
“Who’d he teach?” Tenko asked, obviously suspicious. Toshinori laughed. “Well, he taught…um… someone I taught! We worked together, you see! We both had a soft spot for a particular student!”
Uh-huh. Toya had never heard of a time when Toshinori taught at any sort of school. Toshinori quickly changed the subject. “Look! We’re at Toya’s place! We’ll pick you up tomorrow, Toya!” Uh-huh. Yup.
Toya leaped out of the van and ran out into the yard. He had to leave the comfort of his friends to go see his dad… ugh.
At least he could see Natsuo and Fuyumi. Natsuo was particularly fun to be around ever since Toya almost died.
Luckily, Endeavor was probably training Shoto, which was like, oh no poor Shoto, but at least that meant he was distracted and Toya could avoid him. Or bully him. Either one was fine with Toya, but infinitely less fun than questioning Toshinori on his relations to his brand new teacher.
Toya sighed and walked into his house.
Endeavor was sitting alone on the couch, watching some TV, obviously distracted.
Okay, Toya could either bully him or run into his bedroom.
He didn’t have to make a decision. “Hello, Toya. How was school?”
Uh. Endeavor had never asked how school was before. “Pretty good. Almost got expelled. Learned some… stuff.”
Endeavor looked concerned. “You… were ALMOST EXPELLED?” He asked, raising his voice. Toya shrugged. “Well, I mean… the worst performer got expelled, and I didn’t do great. It wasn’t my fault, though! My quirk was useless for the exam! Not to mention my teacher kept talking about how I need to avoid setting myself on fire.” Toya groaned.
Endeavor changed the channel as his show finished up. “You should listen to your teacher. He might get you out of trouble.”
What was THAT supposed to mean? Toya rolled his eyes. “You're agreeing with him, of course, you think I should listen to him.”
Endeavor got up and walked over to the kitchen. “...You know, I have Friday off. Maybe I can pick you up instead of All Might, and I can take you somewhere. You like Evanescence, right? I could get some tickets for us to go that Saturday.”
Ew. A day with Endeavor? Gross. Besides, Toya liked Evanescence YEARS ago. When he was like, 10. “Nope, definitely passing on that one.”
Endeavor looked disappointed. “...I know you like dying your hair. Maybe I could take you to the stylist? We could visit that Italian restaurant that just opened up.”
Toya rolled his eyes. Since WHEN has Endeavor wanted to spend time with his son? “I thought I was pretty clear.”
Endeavor sighed. “Alright, Toya. I’m going to start making dinner every night from now on. It’s not good for a growing teenager to eat all the takeout you are.”
Toya wanted to smash his head against a table, especially when Endeavor started stirring some pasta noodles. “I’m making spaghetti tonight.”
Toya had to do a double take. “I’m not eating it, you might as well throw it out. I can eat breakfast with my friends.”
Endeavor shook his head. “I want to be the one who feeds you most of the time.”
WHY. “Why NOW, Endeavor! Did my almost-death somehow make you care about me!? Why do you want to be a dad NOW!?”
Endeavor sighed. “I… All Might enlightened me on… something. I know now… that I would be the reason…”
Endeavor shook his head. “It doesn’t matter! I want to be your father because I realize that everything you could’ve been would be my fault!”
Toya was baffled. What was Endeavor TALKING about? “What are you talking about?” Endeavor turned away from his pasta. “You don’t have to forgive me, but please, let me make it up to you.”
Toya rolled his eyes. “Whatever. I’ll eat your nasty spaghetti. Just bring the plate to my bedroom.”
Endeavor smiled. “Goodnight, Toya.”
Toya didn’t respond, instead running into his room and slamming the door behind him.
Toya had no idea how to react to his dad now. He had been so angry at him for so long, and now he suddenly cared? Toshinori must have threatened him. Yes, that had to be it! Toshinori would tell the world how terrible Endeavor was if he didn’t improve!
Well, the apology was not genuine, so it didn’t matter.
He THOUGHT he could start being Toya’s dad! What an idiot!
Toya flopped onto his bed, exhausted, and pulled out his phone.
—
Toshinori was starting to think he might have to tell his son about his time-travel excursions.
Tenko kept asking questions about Aizawa, and Toshinori kept having to make up answers on the spot. It was terrible, and Tenko wasn’t buying it. Toshinori worried, because what would Tenko’s response be if he found out a potential future for himself? A future that went against literally all of his current values?
No. Tenko couldn’t find out the truth. If he ever asked, Toshinori could leave Tenko’s future out if he had to tell the truth.
But then… What if Endeavor told Toya?
Dammit. He shouldn't have told Endeavor about Dabi. But if Endeavor hadn't learned, nothing would have changed… and Toshinori wanted the best for Toya.
Toshinori sighed. He just hoped Tenko would never bring it up.
—
“This ice cream is the best!”
Maybe Haruka should be planning her murder, or stalking Tenko, but instead, she spent her Monday night eating ice cream with Kurogiri.
Haruka got matcha flavored, and Kurogiri got strawberry.
“Hey, Kurogiri… Can you tell me everything you remember from... Before Sensei?” Kurogiri had never said anything about it before. Haruka was curious.
Kurogiri scratched his head. “I don’t… remember…” Kurogiri shook his head. “I remember… I had friends. I don’t remember anything about them.”
Haruka sighed. “I wish I didn’t remember my old life. If I didn’t remember Tenko, my life would be so much easier…”
“Hey! Young lady! Are you who I think you are?!” Haruka turned around to see some random man looking at her with horror. Uh oh.
“Who?” Haruka asked innocently, preparing to slip her gloves off. The man shook his head. “No… IT'S YOU! IT’S-” Haruka cut him off by passing through one of Kurogiri’s portals and putting a hand around his neck.
“Shh. If you yell, I'll have to kill you.” No unnecessary death. She wouldn’t get anything from killing this guy.
He stared at her. “WHO ARE YOU!? HEROES! HEROES!”
Shit. He was calling heroes on her.
If she was caught on her day off, Sensei would literally never forgive her.
If she killed him, there would be even more of a scene than there was already. Investigating a murderer would be more important than investigating a teen jewelry store robber.
“Kurogiri… teleport me back home.” Kurogiri nodded. “Of course.”
Haruka let the man go and stepped through the portal.
Alright. Make sure to not go to this part of town for a few weeks.
