Almost there, just a little closer. Lois cursed her height at moments like this, where the top shelf just seemed a little too high and her arms weren"t long enough. There was also the baby to consider and her maneuverability was definitely more limited due to her protruding belly. Though said baby was the reason that she was this desperate - the craving for a salty snack had her leaving the couch, despite being told to take it easy, and only one particular thing was on her mind.
She forced herself further on her tip toes, her eyes narrowed as she got closer to her destination. With a little push, her fingers would be able to grab on to the bottom of the shelf.
Just as she was about to encircle her grip around the wood, she lost her grip, tilting backwards.
Eyes wide, her hands flailed as she blindly reached for something to hold on to.
All of a sudden, she was steadied, big hands gripping her waist, tight but not bruising, and the touch was immediately familiar.
In seconds, Lois was off the stool and on the ground and when she looked up, she met the blue eyes of her concerned looking husband.
"Hi?"
"Lois," Clark said calmly, taking her in to make sure she was okay, the worry fading as he got his confirmation. "What were you doing?"
She pointed in the direction that she was trying to go. "Trying to get some chips?"
"And you couldn"t call me because ...."
"You were not around," Lois replied. "And the baby needed chips."
"The baby needed chips," he echoed, letting out a small chuckle.
Putting on her most innocent expression, she nodded. "He"s partial to barbecue."
Clark raised an eyebrow. "He? I thought we decided to keep the reveal a surprise."
"Well, I don"t know for sure, but I"m pretty confident that this guy-" she rubbed her stomach for emphasis- "Is going to be a boy."
"I"ll trust your instincts," he said, moving toward the cabinet and pulling out the aforementioned barbecue chips and handing it to her. "Though for the future, could you call me before climbing on things? The baby may need chips, but we both need you to stay in one piece."
She accepted them gratefully, leaning up to kiss him. "You would put in a bubble if you could."
"Just until the baby is born," he said, wrapping his arms around her. "You don"t have to do everything, you know."
"Can"t break age old instincts," Lois pointed out. "I"m going to be me and you knew that when you put a ring on it." She waved the hand with a ring finger for emphasis.
"That part I knew."
"Admit it, you love me anyway."
"Maybe because of it." He leaned down and kissed her again. "But you can"t stop me from trying to protect you, and you knew that when you married me." Clark raised his own ringed hand, a cheeky smile on his face.
"My overprotective superhero."
"That"s me," he said.
"Maybe, I will consider slowing it down," she said, feeling slightly bad at causing him tension. And to be fair, she was afraid for a moment there too.
"That"s all that I ask for," he said.
"But you need to put things on the lowest shelf! Some of us weren"t tall and the heels don"t work on these swollen feet."
Clark laughed. "Deal."
She grinned and kissed him, and he kissed her back, embrace deepening, the chips long forgotten.
When Lois found out she was pregnant, she hadn"t been sure what to think. After all, marriage and a family had never really been a part of the plan. Until she went searching after a story that altered her life and path in ways she could"ve never expected.
And right now?
She was pretty damn happy and wouldn"t change a thing.
