Work Text:
Every god in Teyvat felt it when it happened—the death of an archon. Which archon was it? It was not easy to guess, but some of them knew, while some could deduce who it was.
In Fontaine, Focalors worriedly looked up, even if her gaze would not reach Celestia. What changes would a god’s death—the oldest god, even—create for the people of Fontaine? For the people in Teyvat? Why did the oldest god die at the hands of Celestia?
Focalors is worried—rightfully so. She was also planning her death after all. Not to mention, the death of the God of Contracts also meant the destruction of his divine throne. Yes, the divine throne that she spent hundreds of years planning to destroy. This made her suspect that Morax’s identity is not that simple, and that Celestia’s action against him is a big mistake.
For his death to actually destroy the divine throne… does not that mean that the position of an Archon was really meant for him? A position that no one could replace? If so, why? Alas, she could only speculate. If ever there is an afterlife, perhaps she would be able to ask him. For now, her priority is the people of Fontaine and that pesky prophecy.
She hopes that Celestia would not mind two Archons dying within the same year, along with their thrones, so that no one would ever feel dread on becoming an Archon ever again.
Saleos thought that everything would go according to plan. However, the Traveler arrived, the Abyss became more active, her child—La Signora— died, and now, Morax was killed by the knight of Celestia.
Morax, who initiated to support her rebellion against the divine.
Morax, who was supposed to be their shield.
Morax, who, in exchange of his gnosis, asked for help to investigate his origins.
Morax, a descender and anomaly in this world.
They both knew that he is a descender. After all, he was not affected by the Irminsul. She was still thinking of that letter from him that mentioned someone named Rukkhadevata. He knows Rukkhadevata, but she does not. Apparently, she is someone important. Someone that she should have known. Additionally, that last letter from him is a bit disturbing. It happened days before their rumored ‘disappearance’.
Saleos,
What is this that I’ve heard about from your Fatui agents? The Sixth Harbinger position is currently vacant? I thought only La Signora died during the plan in Inazuma? Are you experiencing troubles? Do not hesitate to write a letter to me if you need assistance.
Respectfully,
Morax
The letter is too casual and the writing a bit frantic, as if it is written with haste (probably because it is). She did not expect Morax to become… less sanctimonious. However, he is no longer alive.
“Pierro.”
“Yes, Your Majesty?”
“Prepare for a trip to Mondstadt.”
Pierro hid his reaction, but she could see the confusion in his eyes. She doesn’t care. The only one who could answer her questions is Barbatos, and she’ll have those answers, no matter what.
“As you wish.”
Her predecessor warned her before.
“He is different from all of us, and favored by the Heavens. However, he is an outsider. And outsiders… do not have a place in this world.”
She wondered how her predecessor would have reacted once she learned of Morax’s death. Would she be reassured? Or perhaps, glad? Or would she feel the way she felt now, fearing Celestia, knowing that they could well be the next ones to perish?
She sighed.
“If he was an outsider, then, what are we?”
She whispered, and the wind answered her.
Usurpers. We are Usurpers, and heartless monsters.
