Confusing Times

Summary:

Adora is 100% sure she's into women.
Make that 110% sure.
But when she spots a very handsome magicat... maybe that percentage goes down to 50%...

Fluff - no smut.
Only kisses.

Notes:

Fluff - Enjoy!

Work Text:

Adora likes women. Exclusively. But what is it about this person across the room, that’s got her all flustered? She can’t tell from where she’s staring whether what said person is. All she can tell from where she’s standing is that they’ve got 2 different coloured eyes, that they keep glancing over at her and that they are a magicat. She groans to herself, “Why did this have to be a masquerade?”
“What are you looking at?” Glimmer comes over beside Adora, trying to figure out who’s caught her best friend’s eye when she notices the person, “Wow… really, Adora?”
“What?!” Adora asks a little too loudly and the person with the mismatched eyes glances over again, the look in their eyes makes it look like they are grinning at her, Adora blushes, nudging her best friend, “Who is that?”
Glimmer narrows her eyes ahead, “The magicat?”
Adora nods.
“No idea. He came with Scorpia.” Glimmer waves her hand around as she recalls the events from before.
“He…?” Adora deflates slightly, “Oh…”
“Why, Adora…” Glimmer smirks, “I didn’t know you swung both ways…”
“What?! Pfft… I don’t…” Adora flusters, “I don’t swing both ways… it’s just…”
“Yeah, yeah. I’ve already heard it.” Glimmer puts her hand up, “Why don’t you go talk to him? I mean, it’s not like you like him like that, right?”
“Right.” Adora quickly says, making no moves to go anywhere except where she is rooted to the ground.
Glimmer rolls her eyes and shoves Adora forward. And when Adora literally stops 2 steps ahead of where she was, Glimmer groans and grabs Adora by the elbow and leads her to the magicat, much to Adora’s refusal. Stopping when they stand in front of the magicat. Adora notices how attractive and handsome the magicat is in their navy blue suit, a mask covering most of their face, only their eyes glistening under the mask.
“Ahem, hello!” Glimmer greets happily as the magicat turns around from their conversation to give her their full attention, “I’m Queen Glimmer and this is my best friend, Adora.”
Adora mouth stops working as she just stares in stupor at this person in front of her.
The magicat chuckles, replying in a low and raspy voice, “A pleasure to meet the both of you.”
“And who may you be?” Glimmer questions, “I noticed you arrived with Princess Scorpia. Are you her… consort? Boyfriend?”
The magicat chuckles again, “No and no. Princess Scorpia is just a friend.”
Adora is torn between what she thought she knew about herself and who is standing in front of her. Maybe Perfuma was right about love being fluid or whatever it was she said when she was talking about her past loves.
Wait. Love?
No. It’s not love. Adora’s just met this person. Doesn’t even know his name yet.
Her thoughts are broken when Glimmer nudges her, Adora frowning slightly as she looks at her friend, “Huh?”
“Would you like to dance, Adora?” The magicat asks, holding out his hand to her.
“Uh, sure.” Adora gingerly takes said hand and the magicat gently tugs her onto the dancefloor, pulling the blonde into his arms as a slow song comes on, the magicat feels Adora stiffen in his arms.
“Are you alright, princess?” The magicat asks.
“Yeah… I’m fine.” Adora replies trying to reel herself in, not sure what’s she’s feeling is right or wrong, just different and a little scary, “Uh, also, I’m not a princess.”
“You are to me.” The magicat says with a slight sigh and then quickly apologises, “My apologies, Adora. I shouldn’t have said that.” The magicat takes a breath before adding, “Because clearly you are a queen…”
Adora snorts out a laugh as she loosens up in the magicat’s arms, noticing that he is slightly shorter than her, but she can feel the lean muscle through the suit he is wearing as she wraps her arms around his shoulders and leans her head in the crook of his neck. Maybe she had been wrong all along.
The song ends and the magicat taps Adora who is still swaying, on the shoulder, “Adora?”
“Hm?”
“I think we should stop dancing.” The magicat says as Adora’s pulls back, the sting of rejection fresh in her mind before she’s pulled back in, “Because the music has ended.”
Adora’s face turns red in embarrassment, “Oh. Right.”
The magicat chuckles softly, “Come on, princess.”
He puts his arm out, crooked at the elbow and Adora loops her arm through it without a second thought, she thinks to herself, maybe she did swing both ways after all.
“Where are we going?” Adora asks.
“Walk me out?” The magicat asks, “I have an early morning tomorrow and it is past my bedtime.”
Adora smiles, giggling a little at the reason, “Okay, yeah. I can walk you out.”
The magicat nods, passing a few people on the way out. One of which stops them.
“Lord Catra.” The woman dressed in a suit, hat and a mask, Adora can tell it’s a woman by the way the suit hugs her curves then turns to the blonde and then back at the magicat with a raised eyebrow and a slight eyeroll, “Your hat.”
“Thank you, Lonnie.” Catra takes the hat from Lonnie, nodding at her as he puts the hat on his head, Adora can’t help but marvel at the way it sits perfectly over his ears and then she realises it’s been modified for the magicat, Catra turns to Adora, “Ready?”
“Yes.” Adora replies a little too eager and Lonnie shakes her head at them as they walk out.
“So… Catra is it?” Adora asks turning her head to see the magicat’s eyes.
“Lord Catra.” Catra bows teasingly, “And what title have you got?”
“I told you, I don’t have one.” Adora rolls her eyes good naturedly, a smile tugging on her lips, “Just Adora is fine.”
“Just Adora?” Catra asks with a smirk and Adora sees a glint in the magicat’s eyes, “No. That just won’t do. I’m sure you are a princess or a queen.”
“Well, it is just Adora.” The blonde shrugs as a car pulls up, the valet running around and handing Catra the keys, “I guess this is where we say goodbye.”
Catra tilts her head as Adora slowly unwinds her arm from the magicat’s, “I don’t feel like saying goodbye yet.”
“I thought you said you had an early morning.” Adora says smoothing out the front of her dress to keep herself busy.
“I do.” Catra replies reaching out for Adora’s hand, “But, I would like to spend a little more time with you. If you want.”
“What did you have in mind?” Adora asks raising her eyebrows playfully and Catra grins back under his mask, which makes the blonde look away with a blush, “I’m not sleeping with you.”
“That. Was not what I was thinking.” Catra replies truthfully, “I was thinking we could go to this little place I know to get to know each other a little better.”
Adora looks at the magicat suspiciously, “Is this little place… your place of residence?”
Catra laughs, shaking his head, “No. It is not. I’ll send you the address if you are really that untrusting.” Catra pulls out his phone, tapping on it a few times before looking up, “What’s your number?”
“You want my number?” Adora asks.
“No, I want your bank PIN.” Catra says back incredulously, “Yes, I want your phone number so I can send you the link to this place I want to take you to.”
“Oh… that wasn’t funny.” Adora says trying not to smile.
“Yeah? Then why are you smiling?”
“I’m not.” Adora says with a smile that she tries to cover with her hand, “Shut up!”
Catra smiles back just as wide as the magicat remembers he’s still wearing the mask and Adora can’t see it, instead he schools his own facial expressions back to neutral, holding the phone out to the blonde, “Here, put your number in.”
Adora takes the phone, their fingers touch briefly and Adora can’t help but feel a tingle from the contact, she quickly types her name and number in before handing it back.
“Thanks.” Catra says as he taps away on the phone again before pocketing the phone and a message pings on Adora’s phone, “Go on. If you don’t like it, we will part ways here.”
Adora takes her phone out and opens up the message, her eyes light up as she recognises the place that Catra has sent her the link to, “I know this place! It’s so good! I know the owners too! We can probably get a discount!”
“Woah… calm down.” Catra laughs, “So… is that a yes?”
“Yes.”
“Great.” Catra opens up the passenger door, “The valets are starting to glare at us for standing around for so long and clogging up their spots.”
“Oh, right.” Adora quickly gets into the low sports car as Catra quickly goes around and hops into the drivers, putting the key in and starting the engine, “Ready?”
“Yes.”
“Great.” Catra pulls the car out and starts driving.
“You can take your mask off now, you know…” Adora says as she removes the black mask covering around her eyes, “I don’t think it’ll be a good idea to go in there masked. They might think you are going to rob the place.”
“I’ll take it off once I park up. Kind of need two hands to drive.” Catra replies, “Feel free to pick the radio station though. Car is pretty old and I haven’t got around to updating the radio.”
“Nice car.” Adora remarks as she looks around the vehicle, “What is it?”
Catra looks over, “1967 Chevrolet Camero Z28.” The words seem to go in one ear and out the other as Adora purses her lips, obvious that her question was more for small talk than genuine interest as Catra shakes her head with a slight chuckle, “It’s a muscle car.”
“Oh, pfft, duh.” Adora sinks back in her chair with a grin, “It’s really loud in here.”
“Yep.” Catra replies with another chuckle.
With the silence, Adora finally leans forward and starts pushing buttons on the radio until she lands on a station that plays fairly modern music and she hums along to a few tunes while Catra continues to drive.

“We’re here.” Catra announces once they’ve parked, “Wait up!”
Adora frowns a little when she goes to open the door as Catra runs around like a madman, pulling it open for her. Adora looks up at the outstretched hand and blushes a little, “You’re ridiculous.”
“I am.”
“But I guess it’s charming.” Adora admits shyly, usually she takes the lead but since she’s with this… man, she thinks to herself, I guess it’s nice being treated once in a while.
“Thank you. I do my best.” Catra replies with a light tone as he locks the car up, “A princess like you should never have to open a door.”
“I’m not a princess.” Adora rolls her eyes, but there’s a smile on her lips as she says it, she looks back at Catra, “Hang on. Aren’t you going to take you mask off now?”
“Oh, right.” Catra replies as he goes to unlock the car again, turning to face it whilst removing the mask and throwing it into the car, turning around to face Adora, “Better?”
Adora’s mouth drops as she blurts out, “You are not a guy.”
“Never said I was.” Catra replies with a confused look on her face.
“But… Glimmer said you were and… and… that… Lonnie who gave you your hat called you Lord…” Adora reasons out, “I, I don’t want to assume anything…”
“I’m not a guy.” Catra shrugs, “Sorry to disappoint you, princess.”
Adora visibly relaxes and Catra shrinks into herself, feeling the disappointment rolling off the blonde as she leans back against her car, her ears fold down as she wraps her arms around herself.
“Look, I can just take you home.” Catra suggests instead, “We don’t need to go further… you’re obviously disappointed that I’m not what you’re after… I guess my gaydar was way off.”
As Catra is about to deflate further, she feels strong hands around her shirt’s collar, pulling her off her car as her eyes catches the look in Adora’s eyes, the magicat flinches slightly, “You’re not like, going to punch me, are you?” Catra asks nervously.
Adora shakes her head, a slight giggle comes out, “No. Definitely not.” A blush comes over the blonde’s cheek as she asks the next question, “Can I… kiss you?”
Catra’s ears perk up at the realisation of what Adora just said, “Wait… really?”
Adora nods her head shyly, her hands still on Catra’s collar loosen slightly as she bites her bottom lip, “Yes.”
“Hell yeah, I wanna kiss you!” Catra leans in, pressing her lips against Adora’s, the blonde moaning quietly into her mouth as a smile appears on the magicat’s lips and as they pull apart, “You really thought I was a guy?”
“Yes, okay!” Adora looks up exasperated, “Who seriously looks that good in a suit?”
Catra chuckles as she brings Adora back in for another kiss.
