Work Text:
Y/N is a hard working student at True Cross, and always has ever since he entered True Cross. Even though it isn’t always easy, Y/N always tries his best no matter what. But lately, things haven’t been so easy.
After a short period of not having or receiving any homework after finishing some tests and essays, all the teachers started giving out a whole lot of homework at once. It was fairly easy to keep up with the homework that was given out, but as more and more homework is being given out it becomes harder and harder to keep up. Even Rin seems to be able to keep up with all the homework that’s being given out, which is quite unusual for him.
All of this is making Y/N feel like he’s not doing enough, like he isn’t working hard enough. This has led to many sleepless nights where all he does is his homework in order to feel like he’s keeping up with everyone else. But no matter how many all nighters Y/N pulls, and no matter how much homework he finishes, it still feels like he’s falling behind the rest of his classmates.
Meanwhile Rin is starting to notice something is wrong. He’s noticing how Y/N is struggling to stay awake in class, and how the bags under his eyes are slowly deepening.
After finishing another class, and leaving the classroom for a small break, Y/N lets out a deep sigh and rubs his eyes to try and stay awake.
“Hey,” Y/N hears the soft familiar voice of Rin. Y/N removes his hands from his eyes and looks at Rin, “Hey…”
“What’s wrong?” Rin asks, “Huh…?” Y/N responds with a confused expression.
“Something’s wrong. You have bags under your eyes and you struggle to stay awake in class, it’s not like you,” Rin says calmly, his brows slightly furrowed.
“Nothing wrong. I’m fine,” Y/N says defensively and gives him a slight glare.
“No, something is wrong and I want you to tell me what it is,” Rin says, his voice growing a little louder. “I told you. I’m fine,” Y/N keeps insisting.
Over the next several days Rin keeps on asking what’s wrong, and Y/N keeps on insisting he’s fine. But Rin knows something’s wrong, and he can’t take it anymore.
One evening Rin has had enough, as he’s laying in his bed he decides to go to Y/N’s room. Rin gets out of his bed.
“Where are you going?” Yukio asks and turns around in his desk chair to look at his twin brother. “I’m going to Y/N’s room,” Rin says with a look of determination on his face. He’d never leave the people he cares about in the dark, and that applies to Y/N too. Rin wants to find out what’s wrong so he can help Y/N.
“Come on Rin. It’s getting really late, he’s probably asleep,” Yukio says in response. “Still, I’m going to find out what’s wrong and help him,” Rin replies, then leaves the dorm.
Thankfully, Y/N’s room dorm isn’t too far away, so Rin makes it there fairly quickly.
The blue haired boy doesn’t even bother knocking on the door, he just opens it. It’s just past midnight, on a school night no less. So, logically Y/N should be asleep, Rin thinks to himself.
When Rin opens the door he sees Y/N sitting at his desk, his back facing Rin.
All the lights in the dorm are turned off with the exception of the desk light. Rin can see books and a stack of papers surrounding Y/N.
Rin steps inside. “Hey, what are you doing?”
Y/N turns around in his chair and looks at Rin with a shocked and confused expression. What’s Rin doing here?
Y/N glances at his anti demon pharmaceutics homework then back at Rin. “Uhm… Homework?” The moment the words leave his mouth he regrets it. He could’ve said literally anything else as an excuse, but he just has to admit he’s doing homework.
“Why are you doing homework? It’s already past midnight,” Rin asks and raises one of his brows.
Now Y/N had nothing to say. He has already stupidly admitted that he’s doing homework, but what possible excuse can he use, if any. He looks at the floor.
“It’s none of your concern, really,” Y/N says, trying not to sound rude. “I’m fine. I’ll just finish this, then I’ll go to sleep,” that wasn’t true. Y/N has planned to do more homework tonight but he wasn’t going to tell Rin that, or ask him for help. Y/N doesn’t want to bother Rin with something that is his responsibility.
Y/N sighs.
“Why didn’t you ask for help with your homework?” Rin asks and steps closer to Y/N.
“W- well I…” he has nothing to say.
“If you’re struggling you can always ask for help,” Rin says.
“I just don’t want to be a burden to anyone, besides, it’s my homework, my responsibility,” Y/N says while avoiding eye contact with Rin.
The demon raises one of his eyebrows, “What are you talking about?” He asks and Y/N finally looks up. “What is this ‘my homework, my responsibility’ bs you’re talking about?” Rin asks, “The only reason I’ve been able to keep up with all the homework is because I’ve been asking the others for help,” he says.
“Asking for help won’t make you weak,” Rin adds, but Y/N just stares at him.
“I just… I just don’t want to bother anyone…” he says quietly and with sadness in his voice.
“You won’t bother anyone by asking for help, they’d be happy to help,” Rin says while walking closer, grabbing a spare chair and sitting next to Y/N.
Y/N has nothing more to say, so he stays quiet.
Suddenly, the silence becomes awkward.
“So, uh, I’m not really good at this kind of stuff, but uhm…” Rin pauses for a moment. “How about this,” he starts.
“Tomorrow morning me and the others can help you with any homework you need help with,” he suggests. Y/N is about to protest.
“I promise you won’t be a bother to anyone,” the blue haired boy says reassuringly while flashing Y/N a smile. Then things become awkward again.
“So, uh, you should probably go to bed cuz it’s really late,” he says and rubs the back of his head.
Y/N lets out a small chuckle, “Yeah, you’re right,” he says before letting out a deep sigh, feeling the fatigue slowly taking over.
He stands up from his desk and Rin does the same, “Thank you,” Y/N says, and gives Rin a warm smile.
Rin smiles back, “No problem, see you tomorrow, kay.”
Y/N nods before turning off the desk light. The only light left is the one coming from the hall through the open door.
Rin stands in the doorway as Y/N gets into bed. “Get plenty of rest and get ready to do some homework tomorrow morning,” after that Rin left the dorm and closes the door behind him.
For the first time in a while Y/N can sleep peacefully. He can finally sleep without worrying about not getting homework done in time and without feeling like a burden to anyone.
