Las Vegas

Summary:

Two fathers and two sons decide a trip to Las Vegas is a good idea.

Notes:

This is a one shot of two generations getting together to enjoy a week's vacation.

The story is based on 'Family Snow Days', two generations of Michael Knights and Knight Industries AIs being together as family.

Work Text:

"Michael! Hurry up! Our sons will be waiting for us." The Knight Industries Two Thousand said impatiently while displaying a map on his monitor. "You were supposed to be ready thirty minutes ago. I promised my son, we wouldn't be late."

Michael Knight makes an appearance carrying an overstuffed suitcase in his right hand, "Hold your horses, Buddy. I had to make sure, I packed everything. There's a lot of things I needed for the trip." He said while looking directly at Kitt's front scanner which is now moving rapidly from side to side indicating his impatience.

"There's no horses to hold here although I do have horsepower, Michael." Normally Kitt would laugh at his illogical statement but is now distracted as well to give it another thought. "Are you for real, Michael? Since when do you need that much clothing?" He exclaims during a scan of the overbulging piece of luggage currently being placed into Kitt's open trunk.

"Ooof, I think I overdid it, this thing weighs a ton." Michael complains as he's closing the trunk, "I think, I hurt my back lifting the damn thing." He starts to rub his back while he's opening the driver's door and winces a bit upon sitting down in his usual seat.

Kitt is unsympathetic and points out, "Serves you right, Michael. I did inform you it's only a week's vacation. You didn't need to pack your entire wardrobe into your suitcase." Despite being annoyed at this point as well, Kitt activates the massage feature of the driver's seat. Even after all these years, Kitt's programming is still active -  to serve his partner's every need.

Michael and Kitt have been together as partners and best friends for more than thirty years. Their relationship is one of trust and love. They still have their disagreements once in a while and this is turning out to be one of them.

"Don't do me any favors." Michael snaps back at his best friend, then quickly softens, "I'm sorry, Pal. That was uncalled for. Thanks for the massage."

Annoyance forgotten, Kitt mildly replies, "No need to apologize, Michael, it's alright. I'm used to your abuse by now." The sound of static is heard from the voice modulator - his way of laughing. "Oh by the way, you're welcome. If you're ready, we should be on our way. A week is not very long and both Mike and KITT are required to be back at the S.S.C. in nine days. That is assuming they can leave the hangar once KITT receives his updated nanobots."

Michael shifts slightly in his seat - the massage is helping him to relax. At least the pain is not as bad. "Yeah, Kitt. I'm ready. Gonna be a long trip with my sore back. Let's have a little heat as well. You give the best back massages." Michael comments and shifts some more in his seat while he tries to get comfortable.

The AI complies with the request and remarks slightly surprised, "Did you just compliment me, Michael? You must be feeling better... At least a little bit." More static from the modulator.

The pair drive away from their retirement cottage in Oregon to rendezvous with their sons in twelve hours. Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada is their destination. A week of exploration and gambling is planned for both man and machine although Kitt has the opinion that gambling is child's play since he's a pro of 'adjusting' the odds.

Michael decides to take a short nap while Kitt is driving. "Do me a favor please, Pal. Wake me up in four hours. I want to read about what we can do in Vegas. In the meantime you can check up on our sons," he asked while Kitt slowly moves the seat backwards in preparation for his driver's nap.

"Certainly, Michael." Kitt agrees and warms up his interior a tad. Michael is soon asleep. The AI is satisfied as he drives in silence.

***

In the meantime Mike and KITT are still at the S.S.C. much to the chagrin of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR. The Knight Industries Three Thousand is currently undergoing some needed repairs for his undercarriage. His last mission did some damage to the nanobots in the area and is receiving a revised version of them. Katie and Lisa are both performing the repairs. The two maintenance AIs thought now is the better time than later to do the repairs. Chirping amongst themselves, both agree the work is almost complete.

Michael Knight the second decides this is the time to make an appearance in the garage and stops dead in his tracks at the now upsidedown KITT. His tires held in place within the gimble, the car can't move much to the delight of his driver. The image of an upsidedown turtle is stuck in Mike's head. He starts to laugh while teasing his partner and best friend, "What the hell, KITT? You're being pampered by both of our female AIs? I didn't know you're such a ladies computer."

KITT's twin scanners stop for a moment before resuming their calm motion. "Unlike you, Michael, I know when to joke about certain situations. I'm simply receiving my updated nanobots." The work now complete, the car takes control of the gimble and rights himself. "Thank you, Katie and Lisa," he adds politely.

Mike is still laughing, "Whatever you say, Supercar. Actually we should head off to Vegas soon, I want to be at Caesars Palace before our dads. I need to book rooms for my dad and I, then arrange for appropriate parking spaces for you and your dad."

KITT looks at his driver with his optics somewhat annoyed, "Michael, you should have made the arrangements before today however they're already done as we converse. I have anticipated your lack of promptness and made the arrangements myself." He displays images of the rooms and parking spaces on his windshield. "I trust these are suitable enough?"

Mike looks at the images and whistles, "You got great taste, KITT. These must be the VIP rooms and are the parking spaces VIP as well?" Each room displayed has seperate bedroom, master bathroom, livingroom and kitchen within them. All of the rooms are decorated with expensive accessories appropriate for each area including a widescreen television, stereo and even a tablet for personal use. The parking spaces are wide enough to fit two vehicles each with controlled heating and lighting available. The two rooms and parking spaces have assigned numbers on tickets. One number for a room and parking spot for Michael senior, the other room and parking spot for Mike.

"Indeed, Michael. Our fathers deserve the VIP treatment and of course I want the best for you despite your lack of promptness," KITT remarks with fondness. "If we are to meet our fathers at the hotel, we should leave now. Unless you want me to be in attack mode for the entire trip."

Mike gives the car a look of surprise for a moment before commenting, "Nag, nag, nag... give me five minutes and no, I don't want you in attack mode. We're on vacation. Right, KITT?"

The Shelby sighs inwardly, "Whatever you say, Michael."

Mike is good at his word. Having packed just enough clothing including a suit, he brings the suitcase with him and loads it into KITT's trunk. He waves at Katie and Lisa before entering KITT's interior. Everyone else is either on assignment themselves or out for the day.

KITT rotates the turntable inside the gimble until his front end is facing the doors exiting the garage. While opening the doors, he announces, "Occupant restraint system active," while waiting for Mike to take the wheel.

Mike takes control of the steering wheel and drives quickly out the open garage door, the length of the hangar and finally outside. Once they're on the highway with Vegas as their destination, he relinquishes control of the car back to KITT to play the latest video game displaying on the windshield. "Hey, Supercar, what's our ETA to Caesar's?"

KITT calculates the distance to the hotel along with the speed they're driving at. "Based on my calculations, we'll arrive at the hotel in five hours, twenty minutes at our current rate of speed." He proceeds to display a visual of the distance and speed on the top left hand corner of the windshield.

"Plenty of time to get the tickets for our dads and ourselves. Maybe we can do a little exploring on our own, last time we were in Vegas, we were rather occupied." Mike is referring to their last mission there.

"If you mean almost being blown to pieces, I agree, Michael." The Shelby displays some of the tourist attractions on his windshield, "I would like to drive around the Red Rock Canyon area with my father and there's plenty of hiking trips for you and your father sometime during our vacation." He enlarges a specific image. "Hoover Dam is another option, there's parking available for my father and I while you and your father explore it. My father and I will be able to record the sights with our cameras. In the meantime we can explore both places on our own if you like to."

Mike smiles and is proud of KITT for taking the initiative to plan the trip, "Sounds great, KITT. I like your suggestions. We can go to Red Rock Canyon with our dads one day and Hoover Dam a day or two after that. Since we'll be in Vegas before our dads arrive, let's do a little gambling. I'm feeling lucky today and I see me winning a lot of money... with your help of course." He goes back to playing the video game.

KITT chastises his driver, "Michael, I'm a highly advanced computer with the latest technology, using my abilities to win money is not what I'm designed for. Any funds you require is already provided by FLAG. If we do gamble, we should donate whatever money we make to a worthy cause." The blue orb with the red dot in the middle is staring right at Mike.

"Okay, okay," grumbled Mike. "Crap, I lost." He swipes the game off the windshield and asks KITT to display a book, he's been wanting to read. "Time for some light reading, KITT. If you decide to contact your dad, please let him know, we'll meet the both of them at the front of the hotel," he requests and starts to read the first paragraph of the book on the windshield.

"Of course, Michael." KITT acknowledges while still displaying their course and speed.

***

Four hours have passed since Michael and Kitt started their drive on the road - Kitt gently shakes the backrest of the driver's seat and adds softly, "Michael, it's time to wake up." There's no response. Not surprised in the least, the AI speaks once again, this time with a little more volume, "You hoo, Michael!" Still no response. Performing a quick scan to make sure his best friend is only sleeping, he decides on a sure fire way of waking up his partner. The sounds of 'REVEILLE' are heard within the interior with the volume at almost maximum level.

Michael wakes up with a start and yells, "GOD DAMN IT, KITT! You almost made me have a heart attack!" He glares at the voice modulator and starts to laugh, "You know it kinda reminds me of the time you tried to wake me up before." He adds more calmly and can't remain mad at his best friend for long.

Kitt is laughing along with Michael, "I know, Michael. You gave me hell back then too. You accused me of weaving all over the road. Luckily for you, I suggested you play deaf. We didn't get a ticket that day," the AI said amusedly.

"We sure argued a lot back then, Pal. Now look at us, a couple of old farts enjoying our retirement." Michael laughs even harder.

Kitt counters with mock indignation, "Speak for yourself, Michael. I'm still the same car, sleek and black. You're the only old fart around here." Louder static is heard within the interior.

They both laugh for a few minutes more before Michael asks Kitt for tourist information on Las Vegas. While he reads, he hears a loud beep within the interior.

"Excuse me, Michael. It's my son contacting me via our private channel. Do you require anything else?" Kitt asks and readies himself to answer his son's call.

Michael looks at the voice modulator for a moment, "I'm fine, Buddy. Go ahead, tell KITT hello for me. Let him know we'll be in Vegas in few hours please." He goes back to reading and starts to quietly hum a tune, Kitt's familiar with. It's a Rock a Bye Baby.

***

Kitt is still amused. Now with the sound of the humming lullaby in his interior, he answers the call and sends an acknowledgement ping. "Hello, Son. I trust all is well with you."

"I'm well, thank you for asking, Father. Do I hear a lullaby?" KITT asks curiously. His audio receivers are very sensitive to any sounds and definitely picked up the humming.

"Indeed, you are hearing it, Michael started humming the lullaby just before I answered your call. I don't think he even realizes he's humming. I've lived for over thirty nine years now and still don't understand humans at times." Kitt laughs softly.

"You and I both, Father. My Michael is reading a book. He's actually reading! Usually he plays video games. He lost during the last one he played and decided to read instead." KITT's laughing as well - his laughter is more of a low whistle rather than the static of his father's laughter.

Kitt sends Michael's regards to both the younger AI and Mike as well as his own to Mike."We will be in Las Vegas within seven hours, Son. Is there a reason for your call other than to ascertain our arrival time?" The elder AI asks his son.

KITT in the meantime is looking at Mike who's still reading the book and is quiet. The young AI answers his father, "Other than to inform you to meet us at the front of the hotel, there's no particular reason for my call. I suppose, I wanted some conversations with you. Am I being illogical?"

"No, Son. It's very human like. I'm glad you wanted to converse with me. I enjoy our conversations together as well as those with Michael. I hope you and Mike also like to converse whether you're on a mission or not. He's been your partner for how many years?" Kitt is certain it's at least five years.

"I do enjoy my conversations with my Michael despite his illogic at times. We've been together for five years, nine months, twenty-two days, Father. There were times, I thought neither of us would survive to reach this point. You and your Michael are the only ones who truly understand." KITT doesn't specify any details, it's not necessary.

Kitt understands all too well. Recalling his own past, he remembers all the times he was almost lost to the point of no return and Michael's fights for his own life. "We do understand. You've shown a remarkable ability to adapt and what humans describe it as a will to live. I'm very proud of you, Son and I believe in your partner. You and Mike belong together, keep him safe and I'm sure he will do the same for you as best as he can. He's only human, however I see a strength in him like I see in his father."

"Thank you, Father. Your words are wise, I shall remember them. We'll almost in Las Vegas, shall I contact you again?" KITT asked.

Kitt smiles inwardly, "It will only be a few more hours until we meet in person so to speak, no need to call again, Son. Until then, try to keep Mike out of trouble. You know how humans are like when there's gambling or pretty women involved." He's laughing as he made the last comment, "I love you, Son. Take care."

"I love you too, Father. I'll see the both of you in a few hours." KITT ends the conversation and closes the channel. 'Keeping Michael out of trouble, that will be hard', he thinks as he too smiles inwardly.

***

"Is everything alright, Kitt?" Michael asks while taking a break from his reading, the humming had stopped moments ago.

Kitt replies, "Yes, Michael. No need to worry. Mike and KITT are almost in Las Vegas. They requested we meet them in front of the hotel. Since you're not reading anymore would you like take control?"

"Sure why not, it's been a while since I've driven on an extended trip. I hope my back holds up." Michael commented about his back after the pain intensifies for a moment. "Pal, a little more heat for my lower back please," he requests while trying to hide a grimace from his face.

Kitt does as requested and performs a full medical scan at the same time, "Michael, you've strained your back slightly when you lifted up your suitcase. It's not serious however it's obviously painful to you. If you like we can stop along the way and purchase some pain medication for you," he said gently while a display of the results is on the monitor.

Michael winces once again and agrees, "Yeah, Pal. Not a bad idea. Besides I could use a stretch and I'm getting hungry now. Any place to eat nearby?"

Kitt consults the map on his monitor and does a surveillance scan of the area. "There's two places of interest two miles directly ahead of us. One is a drug store. They're likely to sell the medicine there and across from it is a restaurant. I could use some topping off as well, Michael." The AI answers immediately after the scan.

Man and machine easily locate both places along with a gas station. Fortunately many gas stations sell hydrogen fuel as well, Kitt's number one choice of refill. Once the fuel is paid for, Michael heads over to the store and purchases a bottle of over the counter pain medication along with a bottle of water. At the restaurant, Michael decides on a salad and soup much to the surprise of the AI monitoring him.

"No burgers and fries, Michael? Should I panic and call the doctor?" Kitt asks amusedly.

Michael smiles briefly and explains, "Stomach can't handle the grease anymore, Buddy. Besides I don't think you're appreciate needing air freshener."

"I'm sorry, Michael. That joke was rude of me." Kitt had temporarily forgotten about Michael's stomach problems which started four years ago. "I used to give you hell about your diet and now that you're eating better, I miss nagging you," he said wistfully.

"Comes with age, Kitt," Michael sighs after commenting. "At least you'll remain young. I'm glad the S.S.C. will provide all the care you need," he added with a slight smile.

Kitt gently said, "Not quite, Michael. I'm getting old myself and you've taken good care of me on your own. We still have plenty of years together. I will provide for your care as well when the time comes - be assured it's not anytime soon."

Stomach filled and fuel topped up, both Michael and Kitt are ready to resume their trip to Vegas. Feeling much better, Michael drives the rest of the way to the city. While approaching Caesars Palace, they notice the various displays of colored lights and water fountains.

"Geez, they go all out here, Pal. Is it my imagination or has the city gotten bigger since we were last here?" Michael looks around and frowns slightly, he's used to the peacefulness of the cottage in Oregon.

Kitt's in full surveillance mode, "Indeed, Michael. Las Vegas is much larger now since the last time we were here. It was during our final year working for FLAG." Kitt remembers the last assignment they were given, helping a father find his kidnapped son. "It was also the year, I was given full autonomy and no longer the property of Knight Industries. When you decided to leave FLAG permanently, I retired with you. It's the best decision, I ever made," The AI said warmly.

"For a time, I missed the excitement and danger of our previous lives but now I'm glad we survived it so we can enjoy our retirement, Kitt. We even outlived our enemies. Sometimes I wondered myself if we could." Michael recalls all the times they both were in danger. He concentrates on one of the worst times, the year he lost his wife. "I still miss Stevie, Pal." Michael said quietly.

Kitt remembers the trauma Michael went through and his own guilt in not being in surveillance mode that day. "She was your wife, Michael. It's understandable, you would miss her no matter how long it's been since her death. I still feel the guilty about my carelessness, Michael. I was too busy complaining about my added 'decor' that day," the AI points out.

Michael gently pats Kitt's dash and mentions, "I never blamed you, Kitt. Remember, you're the one who saved me from my rage when I was about to kill the man who shot my wife. I will never forget." He decides to end this particular discussion, "Enough, Kitt, it's water under the bridge. We'll here to enjoy ourselves. Let's go meet our sons."

***

Mike and KITT arrived in Vegas hours ago. They already explored the strip area and enjoyed taking in the sights while listening to the sounds of gambling machines whirring. There's conversation everywhere from the large crowds. Mike did some gambling with KITT's help while other people spent their money around the blackjack tables and the slot machines. He won enough money to give generous tips to the blackjack dealer and the waitress serving drinks. The rest of the money was already donated to the various homeless shelters throughout the city. Las Vegas like any large city has too many people out on the streets.

Mike is currently standing right by the front entrance of Caesars Palace with KITT parked nearby. He sees the approaching black Trans AM and recognizes the man in the driver's seat. He starts waving to the pair. Kitt stops by the front entrance long enough for Michael to exit and retrieve his luggage. After being greeted by Mike and receiving his VIP parking number, he drives slowly towards his son. Mike helpfully pointed towards the direction of where the Shelby is parked.

Both cars silently greet each other with their scanners knowing they can converse freely once parked in their VIP parking spots. While they drive towards their spots, a valet attempts to stop them unaware there's nobody inside. He asks for their keys to drive the cars himself to their assigned spots.

Kitt is the first to speak, "I can drive myself, thank you." He hadn't bothered to darken his windows and left the man gawking as he drives away.

The valet tries again with KITT who at this time is laughing, the low whistling noise could be heard if anyone was inside his interior. "My apologies, I'm with my father, the black T-Top," KITT politely said as he too drives himself towards his assigned spot.

The valet now absolutely flabbergasted decides to quit on the spot muttering, "What's next, talking e-bikes?" He starts to walk away, stops, turns around and looks at the entrance of the indoor parking lot, "Wait!, what? father?" still muttering as he resumes his walk.

It doesn't take long for father and son to find their assigned spots despite the large size of the VIP indoor parking area. There's room for five hundred vehicles, double if they parked side by side in each spot. Both cars are now parked beside each other only a few feet away from a door leading to and from the hotel's parking level. The four elevators are constantly in use while hotel guests are leaving and returning to their vehicles.

The two cars activate their scanners in full surveillance mode. Each car ascertains the location of their respective partners. The two men are together inside the hotel's front lobby chatting as they receive the cards for their rooms. Satisfied, the cars decide to converse while they wait. There'll be time to recharge later on. Both cars already agreeing, one will recharge while the other watches in four hour shifts. Afterall this is Vegas, the city which never sleeps. Anything can happen here including crime. Several hours pass by, it's been a quiet night, quiet for Vegas that is. Only a handful of people entered and exited the parking lot.

"Father, I'll take the first shift, please recharge. You had a longer drive than my Michael and I." KITT suggests calmly. He already planned to download some tourism guides for any upcoming trips in the next few days.

Kitt agrees. He's feeling a bit 'tired', knowing his batteries need the recharge, "Alright, Son. I'll see you in four hours, not a moment later." He quickly shuts down and all the lights turn off.

KITT continuously keeps his dual scanners active - one is directed on his now slumbering father and the other is checking out the nearby surroundings. "Sleep well, Father." He whispers softly with added affection.

The next four hours are peaceful, KITT prepares for his time to recharge as Kitt is coming out of his. Before either of them do anything else, the younger AI observes two young men walking around eyeing the parked vehicles. "I hope you slept well, Father. It looks like we may have a possible situation. There's two men walking around looking at all the vehicles," He comments lightly.

Kitt smiles inwardly and confirms, "I've seen this many times, Son. Looks like they want to steal a car. Let's see what happens," he adds while trying not to laugh.

The men notice the two black cars gleaming in the low light and one of them whistles, "Man, look at the Shelby. This is my kind of car." He starts walking around KITT and peers through the driver's side windows.

The other man looks at Kitt, "Hey, this Trans AM isn't so bad itself, it's old but it looks like it just came out of the dealership." He too peers through the windows, this time from the passenger side.

The first man looks at Kitt and shakes his head, "Naw, who wants an old clunker like that one, the Shelby is one mean machine. Yep it's the one to take. Gimme the screwdriver."

"Old clunker? I beg your pardon?" Kitt exclaims out loud with some anger. His scanner flashes brightly once as he speaks.

KITT watches his father with a bit of amusement, thinking to himself, 'They're in for it now'.

The men look around, the second one asking, "Who said that?" He's starting to get scared.

KITT couldn't resist, he answers the question with a loud, "He did," as he displays a holographic image in front of him of an arrow pointing towards his father.

Kitt in the meantime starts his engine and slowly moves himself out of his spot. The engine becomes louder as each second passes. "Old clunker! I'll show the both of you old," the AI said angrily however he didn't need to do anything else. Both men look at each other in panic and run off, dropping the screwdriver in the process.

Both cars are laughing at this point - static from the older and a low whistle from the new.

"Are you alright, Father? I hope you didn't take that insult seriously. I admire the way you handled the situation." KITT is not quite sure his father is over his anger.

Kitt is still laughing and answers, "I'm fine, Son. My so called anger was more of an act on my part, I found the situation quite humorous actually. I may be old but definitely not a clunker. It's your turn to recharge now, KITT. Sleep well." He turns on his monitor to check out the video replay of what happened and plans to show Michael later on.

"Goodnight, Father," The Shelby said softly before shutting down for recharge.

***

The next day both men meet up with their respective cars after a night of dinner and conversations. Consulting with their partners before leaving their rooms, it was agreed upon by all four to drive around the Red Rock Canyon area along with a day of hiking for the two men.

A smiling Michael senior enters Kitt's interior after a cheerful, "Good morning, Pal. Anything exciting happen here?"

Kitt replies warmly, "It was quiet for the most part, Michael. Except for this." He brings up the video of the two would be thieves.

A minute later, Michael starts laughing loudly, "Those men had no clue, you pretending to be angry and KITT with the arrow. This is priceless. By the way, you're never an old clunker to me, Pal," he said warmly as gives a gentle pat on the dash.

"Thank you, Michael. How is your back this morning?" Kitt asks softly and prepares to activate the massager in the driver's seat again.

Michael stretches for a moment before straightening back in his seat, "Much better, Buddy. Thanks. Last time I ever pack my suitcase that full. You're right, I didn't need five leather jackets."

Kitt can't help himself - he starts to laugh and exclaims, "Five? What on earth, Michael? We're in Las Vegas in the middle of summer! You don't need one, nevermind five. As it is, I'll need to turn up my AC for you later on." Still amused, the AI wonders if his best friend should get his head examined. 'Black leather jackets in the middle of summer indeed'! He thought while still observing his driver. Kitt stores the conversation into his memory banks.

"I know, I know, I know. Yeah, I'm starting to sweat already, Kitt." Michael said and takes off his leather jacket. "Anyway once Mike and KITT are ready, we should head off. You can do the driving if you don't mind please, Pal. I'm going to read up on the best hiking trails. Hmm White Rock to Willow Springs doesn't look too bad." Michael is checking out the information of all the trails, "Better not do the Grand Circle Loop in this heat. I'm not the young, dashing man I used to be." He chuckles when mentioning 'dashing'.

"You're always be young and dashing to me, Michael." Kitt said gently not hiding the love he has for his longtime partner. "We both know, you're in good physical condition for a man of your years however a six hour strenuous hike may not be the best thing for you," he added.

Michael gives Kitt another affectionate pat on the dash and comments, "Still looking out for me eh, Kitt? Something's never change." He noticed the tone of the AI's voice and smiles himself knowing Kitt will pick up his own love for his mechanical partner.

***

Mike and KITT are having their own discussion at the same time. "Looks like our dads are almost ready, KITT. So what plans are you and your dad thinking of while I'm hiking with my dad?" Mike asks curiously.

"Besides the thirteen mile scenic route, Michael. I do not know yet. Perhaps, I'll take photographs along the way as well. I want to experience the sights like you humans do." KITT replies evenly, "Being an AI, I have all the data I require however when I was first activated I had little experience with humans. I only had my creator and Sarah until you came into my life." He pauses for a moment finding the right words to say, "I'm very thankful to have you as a partner and friend, correction best friend but I wish to learn more. I like to meet more people when we're not on our missions."

Mike blushes a bit when he heard his partner's sentiment, "Thanks, Supercar about the best friend part. I know Kitt is not human but he has a lot of experience dealing with us humans. Maybe talking to him some more might give you some of the answers you're seeking." Mike smiles as he's looking at the orb in front of him, "Enough serious stuff for now, KITT. Let's go!"

"Agreed, Michael." KITT starts his engine, "Occupant restraint system active," he vocalizes while pinging his father and sends their readiness to drive to their destination.

***

The entire day is spent at Red Rock Canyon. The cars wanted to drive the thirteen mile scenic route on their own after dropping off their partners. With windows darkened, they look like any other car as they blended in with the traffic. Sharing information and photographs together, they chatted with each other for the entire trip. The route completed, they decide to do a second loop around for the sheer enjoyment of it. Afterwards they return to the parking lot and wait for their partners.

***

Michael and Mike having completed the White Rock to Willow Springs route agree to hike a couple of more trails while using the local transportation available to drive them from one trail to the next.

Six hours of hiking later, Michael had enough for the day. He walks towards Kitt who's waiting for him at the parking lot where the men were dropped off.

"Michael! You look like an overripe tomato! Did you forget your sunscreen?" Kitt exclaims with alarm. He immediately does a vitals scan. Despite the redness, Kitt is relieved to find his best friend is only slightly burnt. He immediately lowers the temperature of his interior to inside room temperature.

Despite being tired, Michael replies enthusiastically, "I had a great time, Pal. The trails are beautiful. I've taken a lot of photos with my cell phone. Have a look yourself whenever you want." He briefly looks at his left wrist, "Sorry about not using the comlink, I thought you and KITT would be out of range while you two were on your own." Michael touches his face, "Yeah, I forgot my sunscreen. Good thing I brought along my aloe stuff." He then looks in the rear view mirror. "Overripe tomato, you got that right, Buddy." The man smiles at the comment made by his best friend.

Kitt is apologetic, "I'm sorry as well. I didn't think of the comlink myself." The AI adds softly, "Even though we're retired, my programming dictates, I must protect you at all times to the best of my ability."

"You're way beyond your programming, you oughta know that by now, Kitt. There's no need to protect me anymore." Michael comments while looking at his partner with fondness, "I was with my son and he's a trained ex-miltary man like I was when I was his age. Believe me, I was in great hands. You deserve to have your own life, Buddy. You owe me nothing." Michael starts to rub the steering wheel.

"We've been through this debate many times, Michael. I will always protect you. My life is with you, it always will be. I'm truly happy," Kitt responds with tenderness. "Are you ready to return to the hotel?"

"Ready now, Kitt. And, Kitt? I love you too." Michael said warmly and starts the engine, "Mike is still hiking, we'll be going out to dinner later on. You better let KITT know, we heading back."

"I'll contact my son right now, Michael. Excuse me for a moment." Three seconds later Kitt mentions, "KITT has notified me that Mike is on his way back. They will meet us back at the hotel in approximately two hours." He stops for a moment and clarifies, "My son feels more at ease when Mike is wearing his earwig when they're away from each other even during our vacation." They drive away from Red Rock Canyon with Michael behind the wheel.

Two hours later, the cars reunite in the VIP parking area while the men freshen up in their respective rooms before heading out to dinner.

Michael and Mike are dressed in their suits and having dinner at one of the fancier restaurants within the hotel. Michael is enjoying his lobster tail and Mike roast lamb. They discuss the hikes they did during the day then talk about their partners.

"Mike, how are you and KITT getting along? I know it's almost six years since the start of your partnership." He asks in between bites of lobster.

Mike goes to grab a roll from the basket in the middle of their table, "Great, Dad. Although sometimes, I feel he's still a little too formal for my liking. I guess, it's part of his charm."

Michael grins for a moment, "Sounds like my Kitt but he relaxed quite a bit after our second year together. I guess, I rubbed off more on him than I thought. Your KITT had a different creator than mine, their personalities probably reflect it."

"Dad, the thing is, I'm used to KITT being the way he is even his formality. I shouldn't expect him to change on my behalf." He said and grabs another roll.

"I think your KITT will change, even if it's gradual. One thing for sure, if he's anything like my Kitt, you'll have a best friend for life." Michael finishes the last of his lobster. "Hey! Don't eat all the rolls!" The man complains as he sees his son helping himself to more rolls.

Mike asks the nearby waiter for another basket of rolls, "Yeah, you're right on that, Dad. KITT and I are pretty close, although sometimes we argue about of all things jokes. He says my jokes are terrible," he laughs for a moment.

Michael looks at his son with amusement, "My Kitt's jokes are terrible as well but they kept me alive when we were investigating a case during our third year together. I won't bore you with all the details. I was poisoned and had to drive back to L.A. to nab the bad guy who had both the poison and antidote. It was touch and go for a while but we made it in time and here I am now, thanks to Kitt."

"I've read about it, Dad. Reminds me of when I told you, I was poisoned at one time. If it wasn't for KITT, I wouldn't be around either." Mike grabs another roll from the new basket. A day of hiking makes a man very hungry.

"That's our partners for us, Son." Michael looks at his comlink, "I'm pretty tired, Mike. I think I'll head back to my room. See you in the morning." They both stand up and give each other a hug. While Michael leaves, Mike sits back down and starts thinking more about his partner. A smile crosses his face in appreciation.

Michael reaches his room, enters and sits down on a couch in the livingroom. He raises his left arm and speaks into the comlink, "Hey, Buddy. You'll still up?"

Kitt immediately responds, "Michael? Are you alright? Is there anything wrong?" The AI asks anxiously.

"No, I'm fine, Kitt. Tell me a joke," Michael requests and leans back against the couch. He laughs while listening to the jokes his best friend provides.

It's four hours later when Michael finally decides to go to bed with a smile as he heard both new and old jokes from his lifelong partner. Feeling content, he falls asleep knowing Kitt will be waiting for him in the morning.

***

Both cars have completed their recharging and are waiting for their partners. Kitt is currently reflecting back to the previous evening. At first, he was worried for Michael - the silence was alarming to the AI. It was unlike the man who usually teases him about his jokes. One hour afterwards, Michael was laughing for the rest of the evening as he heard each joke. The man whom Kitt deeply cares for decided to go to bed with a contented, "See you in the morning, Pal," his voice came through the comlink softly before the signal ended from Michael's side. Kitt smiles inwardly while he waits patiently and his CPU returns to the present.

Mike is the first to appear. He gives Kitt a pat on the roof and informs him his partner is on his way before heading towards KITT. Mike enters his own partner's interior and asks the Shelby about the day's activities.

"Michael, how about a drive around the city? You expressed an interest in some of the 'tourist traps', I provided information about them earlier." KITT suggests and displays a full listing of attractions throughout the city on his windshield.

Mike goes over the list and points out, "Hey, the indoor skydiving. That's the ticket for me, I'm not sure about my dad though... Hmmm, there's always the High Roller Ferris wheel."

KITT ever patient adds, "There's always the exhibits and the more quieter tourist attractions, Michael."

The two continue on exchanging ideas or what some may it call a friendly argument for the next fifteen minutes before finally deciding on a compromise. They both talk it over with their fathers who are agreeable to the day's plans.

The entire day is spent visiting the quieter exhibits and attractions, leaving the more active activities for the next day. Michael informs his son, he's still a bit tired from all the hiking they did on the previous day. Both AIs have their cameras active thoughout the entire day - taking photographs of both the exhibits and their partners as they posed in front of them. Later all four discuss the day's activities before the men head off towards their rooms and the cars go for recharge. This time, Kitt takes the first shift watching over his son as the latter recharges. The elder AI takes time to organize all the photos taken during the day, storing them in a specific order into his memory banks.

The rest of the night is peaceful for all four.

Day four is the day Mike has been looking forward to. He wants to  participate in all the exciting attractions from indoor skydiving to the ferris wheel to sky jumping in the heart of the city. He's very excited like a little kid on Christmas morning. Having finished a hearty breakfast, Mike has a discussion about today's plans with his father. Both men are in Mike's room.

"Dad, you're ready for today's activities? Up for a little indoor skydiving?" Mike asks cheerfully.

Michael thinks about it for a moment, "Yeah sure, it should be a lot of fun although I think Kitt would give me hell. He always worries when I supposedly overdo things." He's laughing as he's visualizing a car giving a human a lecture on safety.

Mike starts to laugh as well, "I know what you mean, Dad. My KITT is the same, although since I'm younger, the lectures I get are about my irresponsibility according to him. Get a load of that." He continues to laugh. "I'm used to it by now, I know he's there for me when I need him."

"Sounds very familiar, Son. It was the same for Kitt and I when we worked for FLAG. I couldn't have made this far without him." Michael is smiling as he remembers the past.

"Who would have thought, we both have cars as partners and best friends, Dad. I wouldn't change a thing even though at first, I resented you for not being in my life when I was a kid." Mike gives his father a slight smile after thinking back to his childhood.

"I'm sorry about that, Mike. I still feel guilty about not being around but you know the circumstances. No need to bring them up. The important thing, I'm here for you now. For both you and KITT." Michael smiles back before gently squeezing his son's right hand.

Mike squeezes his father's hand back, "Ok, Dad. Come on, let's get a move on, there's a lot to do. Our cars are going to give us hell today for sure!" They're both laughing as they go meet up with their partners.

The first thing on the list is the indoor skydiving. Kitt does all the reservations himself much to the surprise of Michael. Thanking his partner in appreciation via the comlink, he has his turn whooping it up like he was a young man again. Mike takes his in turn in amusement as he watches his father acting like a kid.

Next is the ferris wheel, Father and son admire the view of the city as they circle around. Cell phones out, the men take photos of the view up on top before uploading them to their partners parked below.

Kitt is expressing his regret in not being present in 'person' as he receives the photos. A simple, "You are, Buddy." is heard from Michael's comlink inside the interior of the car.

KITT as well is storing his copies of the photos into his memory banks and listens with his audio receiver as Mike is describing the scenery through the earwig. It's one of the very rare times, the AI wishes he's anything but a car. The thought is immediately erased from his CPU after his own father reaches out to him through a ping. Together they watch with their optics, the men in their lives thoroughly enjoying themselves.

It's time for the sky jumping, Michael at first thought to bail out but decided against it since it was Kitt who thoughtfully made the reservations for both him and Mike. Having received their lessons on safety and fitted with a jumpsuit each, Mike is the first to go followed by his dad. The view of the city while they were in mid air is magnificent. The thrill of gradually descending makes both men yearn for more. Taking a breather and sharing how it felt with their partners, they go back again for another round. Fortunately, the wait isn't too long. The second time, both men asks their partners to record everything so they too will know how it was like.

The rest of the day is spent riding the go-karts, driving an exotic car each despite Kitt's and KITT's objections - both cars believing they're exotic enough for their partners and finally the flyover Las Vegas attraction after taking a break at the Cactus bar which is within the same building as the attraction itself. It seems real to the men as they view the images before them along their fellow ride seekers.

Overall an exhausting but thrilling day. They eat dinner together before retiring to their own rooms to rest before the next day's activity, a trip to Hoover dam.

The cars in the meantime have downloaded the latest information about the dam such as the best views of the dam, where to park and where the local restaurants are. A brief conversation later, Kitt recharges with his son keeping watch.

***

The drive to Hoover Dam is pleasant with the temperatures cooling off from the heat of the previous four days. Michael and Mike enjoy breakfast at one of the nearby restaurants to the dam. Wanting to arrive earlier to beat the crowds, they were on the road before 6 a.m. After breakfast they drive straight to the dam taking in the sheer size if it.

Upon arrival, they went on the usual guided tour inside the powerplant while the cars park in the designated parking area and observe the crowds of people along with the dam itself. Completing the tour, Michael and Mike walk the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge to admire the view from above recording everything on video for their respective partners.

Once back to the cars, all four try to figure out what to do next. Finally it was KITT who suggests a drive to Lake Mead along with a stop to Boulder City to go to the Hoover Dam museum would be suitable. With plan in mind all four converse with each other throughout the entire trip making the day a memorable one.

Returning back to the hotel, the men chat about the day and the AIs decide a full eight hours recharge would be welcome. This time it's Mike who keeps an eye on both cars as they recharge via the camera KITT thoughtfully left on as one of his security features. Mike smiles as he sees the Trans AM and Shelby side by side completely dark. Even their scanners are turned off as their image is on the TV at the top left hand corner as Mike watches it and the news.

The last full day is spent walking along the strip with the cars following them. With their windows darkened, no one gives them a second look, thinking they had drivers behind the wheels.

Mike and KITT eventually go off on their own wanting to drive around the city.

Michael decides a little gambling would be fun with Kitt voicing his objections. There's little need for the money since Kitt with some of his own retirement funds dabbled in the stock market. With investments in technology stocks, the amount of funds coming in is much more than he needs to make the car independently wealthy. Not needing the money for his own maintenance since the S.S.C. takes care of his mechanical and electronic needs, Kitt transferred all of it into Michael's bank account.

"Alright, Michael. If you ask for my assistance at the roulette tables, the winnings should go towards the various charities throughout the city. I can transfer anonymously if you prefer." Kitt insisted.

Michael smiles as he looks at the car before heading inside the nearest casino, "I wouldn't have it any other way, Pal. I know about the money you transferred into my account."

Kitt is silent as he watches his best friend walk away. Driving to the nearest available parking spot, he parks and waits for his partner's signal from the comlink. An hour passes of constant signals then there's silence. Kitt becomes concerned for Michael's well being until he spots him with his optics. Michael is walking towards the car and whistling quietly. Once inside, he leans back and relaxes not wanting to start the engine yet.

"Are you alright, Michael?" Kitt asks gently as he adjusts the AC to a comfortable level.

Michael looks at his partner's voice modulator and quietly responds, "Yeah, Kitt. I'm fine. Got bored of gambling. You know what to do with the winnings." He watches the monitor as the funds are donated to the various charities bank accounts. "Buddy, this has been a wonderful week. I spent time with my son and you with yours. I'll be glad to head home tomorrow, I'm feeling a little homesick now."

Kitt agrees with his best friend, "I too want to go home, Michael. Our place is at that little cottage in Oregon. I'll admit at times, I miss our old life however I'm at peace now. I want to spend whatever time we have left together."

"We still have plenty of time together, Pal. Come on, let's go for a final drive around the city." Michael starts the engine and drives slowly out of the parking spot.

The rest of the day is spent reminiscing about the old days. The dangers that came with the job, the funny moments when people interacted with Kitt, the pain both experienced either physically or emotionally and finally the joy of being partners and best friends with each loving the other as family.

Night approaches and both cars arrive at their parking spots within five minutes of each other. Michael and Mike greet each other with hugs and chatter once they exit their cars' interiors. They spend the rest of the evening comparing notes about their day and talk about past missions. Most of which Mike is able to access through the archives of FLAG's computers. They retire to their separate rooms and sleep soundly.

The cars in the meantime decided not to recharge. Father and son spend the entire evening and night discussing their week in Vegas, their partners, their past missions in which Kitt adds with a little humor, the experiences he had as one of a kind and then finally their current lives.

Day breaks and both AIs are informed by their partners they will be leaving within the hour. Kitt and KITT exchange photographs of the four of them together throughout their week's vacation.

Michael and Mike come into view of both cars and stop just short of them. "Son, it's been wonderful to spend time with you. Take care of yourself, I love you very much." He gives his son a hug then turns to the Shelby, "KITT, you've done a great job protecting my son. Keep it up and don't forget about your own wellbeing. You're the best friend my son can ever have," he complimented the young AI and gives an affectionate pat on KITT's roof.

Mike returns the hug, "You too, Dad. I love you too." He looks at the Trans AM, "Kitt, you've been with my father for longer than I've known him. You too did a great job protecting and caring for him. Keep him safe and yourself as well." He too gives an affectionate pat on Kitt's roof.

Both men leave room for the cars to move.

Kitt slowly drives away from his spot, turns around and gently touches KITT's front fender with his prow while sending a goodbye through their private channel, "Goodbye, Son. I love you. Take care of yourself and Mike. Remember you have each other if times get tough. If you need any help, don't hesitate to call me or Michael," he said softly - not wanting to back away just yet.

KITT responds to the touch by warming up his front slightly and quietly responds, "I love you too, Father. I will do my best to continue protecting my Michael. I will regularly contact you even it's only for conversations. Keep protecting your Michael as well - I can tell how much you love each other and Father...don't forget about staying well yourself."

The two cars remain in contact with each other for another minute before Kitt backs away.

Each driver enters their respective cars before driving away from the place they called home for the past week. All four will remember the time together for the rest of their lives.
