Work Text:
"I'm off to work now!" Burt calls out when Kurt comes down the stairs early in the morning. Kurt still had a lot of time to kill before going to school but he couldn't sleep anymore and Burt has to go to work already because he has an early client today.
"Okay dad, bye!"
Kurt goes into the kitchen and pours himself a glass of water when the doorbell rings. He raises his eyebrow.
"Dad, did you forget your keys again? I told you to- Blaine?" He gasps when he opens the door only to reveal his boyfriend- dressed in his usual black ripped jeans, black shirt and leather jacket.
Nothing unusual.
But he has cuts and bruises all over his face and his right eye is starting to swell and turning blue.
Blaine grimaces in response. "Can I come in?"
"Of course, you don't even have to ask." Kurt gently takes Blaine's hand in his own and drags him into the house. After closing the door behind them, he turns to face Blaine and asks "what the hell happened?"
He takes Blaine's face in his hands and tilts it a bit upwards to inspect the bruise under his eye better.
Blaine lets him but doesn't answer his question. He doesn't talk at all, really.
"It's okay if you don't want to tell me now, but we have to talk about this, you know that. We talked about it."
Blaine nods. "Later?"
Kurt nods with a small smile. "That's fine. Can you tell me what hurts the most? Or if anything hurts really bad? Do we need to go to a doctor?"
Blaine shakes his head. "Not necessary. Just a few bruises, I swear. A few days rest and I'll be as good as new."
Kurt sighs. They have way too much practise at this than they should have. It isn't fair.
"Okay, here's the plan. We're going to go upstairs, then I'll lend you some clothes and you're going to lie down in my bed, okay? Are you sure you don't have a concussion or something?"
Blaine shrugs his shoulders but then shakes his head. Kurt sighs.
They go upstairs and while Blaine sits down on the bed and starts to undress slowly, Kurt picks out a pair of sweatpants and an oversized sweatshirt for Blaine to wear. He puts the clothes next to Blaine and helps him to change clothes. When he pushes the black t-shirt over Blaine's head, he pauses.
"Blaine" he whispers in shock because Blaine's upper body consists of blue, green and purple bruises.
Blaine suddenly looks very tired and since Kurt knows he won't talk about it now, he just swallows and presses a soft kiss against Blaine's forehead and then helps him to put on the sweatshirt and the pants.
"I'm going to put your clothes in the washing machine. I'll be right back" he whispers and Blaine nods tiredly.
When he comes back, Blaine says "it's time for school. You should go."
Kurt scoffs. "I'm not going."
Blaine looks at him irritated. "Why?"
Kurt looks at him like that question is dumb.
Maybe it is. But Blaine would still like to know the answer.
"Because my boyfriend, who I very much love and care about, came to my house all beaten up and bruised before 8 o'clock in the morning and I'd like to make sure that he's alright and take care of him because I know he's hurting, even if he won't tell me that."
Blaine hums. "I'll be fine. I'm just going to sleep for a while. Until you get back. Then you can do all the things you just said. You have that cheerio thing you told me about all last week. You shouldn't miss it just because of me."
Kurt sighs. "You're more important to me than some dumb cheerio practise. There'll be others."
"Kurt please just go to school, alright? I promise we'll talk after you come back."
Kurt rolls his eyes. "Fine! But I don't like it. Call me if you're feeling worse or if there's anything I can do to help you, okay? And don't do anything but rest. I'll find out if you did."
Blaine manages a small smile. "Yes, Mr. Bossy pants. Thank you. Love you."
"I love you too" Kurt sighs and kisses Blaine's forehead one more time before hesitantly leaving him and going to school.
When Kurt is gone, Blaine spends some time staring at the ceiling because his head is fucking spinning and it's even worse when he closes his eyes. To add to that, his mind is a mess. His thoughts are spiraling so he tries to concentrate on Kurt and his love for him. It takes him a while but finally, he gets calmer and the spinning stopw and then he finally goes to sleep. He feels like he could sleep for weeks.
Kurt can't concentrate. He sits in his classes and tries to follow the things the teachers say, but his mind always goes back to Blaine. It drives him crazy not knowing why Blaine looked so beaten up and while he knows that Blaine needs time alone or time to think by himself sometimes, he can't help but worry. Because Blaine could be in trouble. There could be many reasons why he looks the way he does. Blaine has anger issues sometimes and can't cope well with getting picked on, which is why he dresses himself the way he does. He likes to pick fights with the football players but he had promised Kurt that this was behind him and that he wouldn't do that anymore. So Kurt really hopes that Blaine had held his promise.
But Kurt also knows that Blaine's dad could be responsible for the way Blaine looks. He's an asshole who's also always drunk which doesn't help his temper. And it wouldn't be the first time that he'd hit Blaine. Blaine told him that he does that sometimes. Kurt was shocked and wanted to do something but Blaine made him promise not to say anything.
After the last class of the day, cheerio practise, is finally over, Kurt basically runs home. When he arrives, the first thing he does is checking on Blaine. He opens the door and wants to go in but stops short when he notices that Blaine is sleeping peacefully. He smiles to himself and tiptoes towards the bed and lays down next to his boyfriend who mumbles incoherent words.
Kurt tangles his fingers in Blaine's curls and starts playing with them.
"Mmmh..hi" Blaine whispers and Kurt smiles. He looks so young and peaceful like this.
"Hi" he whispers back. "How are you feeling?"
"I'll be fine" Blaine sighs and holds back a groan as he sits up and leans against the headboard.
"Come on, let's go in the bathroom. You still have some blood on your face. Do you want to take a shower? Or a bath?"
"Bath would be nice but you don't have to..." Blaine closes his eyes when Kurt leans down and kisses his forehead.
"Shh, I'll come get you in a minute, alright?"
Blaine squeezes his hand in thanks and Kurt leaves to draw the bath and get towels and a washcloth.
A few minutes later, he comes back and helps Blaine into the bathroom where he undresses slowly and finally sinks down into the warm water. He sighs in relief when the water reaches his aching bruises and closes his eyes again.
Kurt takes the washcloth and gently cleans Blaine's face in silence.
About half an hour later, Blaine gets out of the bathtub, Kurt helps him to get dressed again and they go back to Kurt's room to lay down in his bed.
Blaine immediately puts his head on Kurt's chest and Kurt's hands move into his hair to playwith Blaine's. Just like they do most of the times.
They haven't exchanged any words other than Kurt making sure that Blaine is comfortable and they continue like this for another few minutes, just snuggled together in Kurt's bed, when Blaine suddenly begins to talk. Kurt hasn't expected him to say anything now but he's pleasantly surprised.
"It was my dad" Blaine says quietly. Kurt's hand doesn't stop moving through his curls. It's reassuring and it makes Blaine want to tell Kurt more.
"I wanted to leave for school and right when I opened the front door, he stepped through it. He was drunk."
Blaine swallowed. "He just started hitting me out of nowhere. He didn't even say anything. When he stopped for a moment to catch his breath, I ran. Came to you."
Kurt doesn't say any of the things he wants to say. That Blaine's dad is an asshole. That he's an alcoholic. That he needs help. Or even better, a prison, for treating his son this way. That Blaine needs to get out of there.
But he knows it wouldn't change anything if he says these things. Blaine has already told him about his plans to move out of there the minute he turns 18 and leave his dad for good. Kurt honestly couldn't wait.
Instead of saying all these things, he kisses the back of Blaine's head. "Thank you for telling me. I know it isn't easy."
"No" Blaine sighs. "But I love you, and I trust you. I want to tell you things. I'm trying to get better at it. Thank you for being patient with me. And thank you for taking care of me. Again."
"You don't need to thank me, Blaine. I love you. I want to take care of you, always. Just like you take care of me."
Blaine hums and smiles a little, then he takes Kurt's hand in his own and kisses the back of his hand before he places it in his hair again.
Kurt gets the message and chuckles while he starts stroking his boyfriends curls again.
"You only like me for my hands."
Blaine hums. "They are magic. They make me feel things I've never felt before. They make me feel loved. So yes, I love them. Deal with it."
Kurt rolls his eyes but presses a wet kiss against Blaine's cheek. "You're a dork."
"Your dork." Blaine grins.
They talk for a few minutes more, then Blaine takes another nap and Kurt follows him shortly after.
He only wakes up when he hears the front door, which means that his dad's home again. He looks down to see if Blaine is still sleeping only to find him already looking at him.
"What? Do I have something on my face?"
Blaine shakes his head. "I just like looking at you."
Kurt chuckles. "Charmer."
Before they know it, Burt stands in the open doorway and clears his throat.
"Hi boys."
"Dad" Kurt exclaims. "Hi."
"Hi Burt" Blaine smiles a little as he turns to face Burt and Burt lets out a gasp at the sight of Blaine's face.
"Is everything okay?"
At Blaine's nod, he seems calmer. "Okay then. What do you want for dinner? I'm ordering something."
"Can we get Pizza?" Blaine asks with a look at Kurt who nods. But not without a sigh and a roll of his eye.
"You're the best. Thank you" Blaine squeezes his hand.
Burt excuses himself to call the pizza place and Kurt is extremely grateful that he didn't pry and left them pretty quickly. Blaine had come a long way with communicating since they started dating and he was comfortable around Burt now but it had taken a long time since he trusted him enough to simply have dinner with him and Kurt couldn't imagine that Blaine would tell his dad anything about his situation at home. He just isn't there yet and that's okay.
When the pizza arrives, Kurt and Blaine go downstairs and eat together at the table. After that, they all clean up together and Burt excuses himself to watch a football game.
"Do you want to watch it with me?" Burt asks. He mostly looks at Blaine since he knows that his son doesn't care about football. Blaine looks at Kurt to assess his reaction. Kurt shrugs his shoulders.
"If you want to see the game, I won't stop you. I'll even sit with you on the couch. But I won't watch" he says and Blaine and Burt grin at each other.
"Okay, let's go then" Burt say and sits down in his armchair while Kurt and Blaine move to the couch. Kurt sits down and Blaine lays down with his head in Kurt's lap, his eyes towards the tv.
While Burt and Blaine watch the game and share some technical football terms Kurt doesn't understand, he reads the newest vogue issue while subconsciously playing with Blaine's hair.
After some time of one-sided comments from Burt, he looks over to see that Blaine has fallen asleep and Kurt is stroking his hair and looks at him with so much love in his eyes that Burt's heart jumps in his chest.
"Is really everything okay with Blaine?" He asks his son quietly.
Kurt stares at Blaine for a moment, then he looks up and says "no, not really. But it will be."
Burt knows it's not his place to ask any other questions. Blaine is a very private boy and doesn't really talk about himself to anyone but Kurt.
"You'll tell me if it's anything serious, right? He's not in danger?"
Kurt presses his lips together. "I can't talk about this with you, dad. I promised him."
Burt nods. "Okay, I won't make you. Just make sure that he knows that he's always welcome and safe here, alright?"
"I will dad, thank you."
"I love you, kiddo."
"Love you too, dad."
