How Could You Forget

Summary:

Prompt: Tim forgets Lucy’s birthday and she’s upset.

Work Text:

Lucy wakes up and rolls over to an empty bed. She groans internally knowing the struggles of Metro. Tim’s transferring to Watch Commander in a few weeks and she can’t wait. She has barely seen her fiancée this week. He’s been so busy with the case they’ve been working, but she misses him. She was hoping he would be home today or she would at least see him.

Lucy slowly rolls out of bed. She is currently seven months pregnant and the heat of the summer is slowly killing her. Their daughter was unexpected, but they both cannot wait. Tim has also been putting her nursery together, telling Lucy he had it and she needed to rest. She wanted to help, but he acts like she is too fragile. She goes to the kitchen and sees a note.

Hi beautiful. I am so sorry I was called out early this morning. We have a lead on this case and I am praying it is the break we need. I miss my girls terribly. I love you baby. I will see you at work. Be safe driving in.

Lucy reads his note a few times and her shoulders drop. She never used to celebrate her birthday, but Tim has always made a big deal about it. He tells her she is worth celebrating and he always goes all out. Now it seemed like he didn’t even remember what today was. It saddened her because this was her last birthday with just the two of them and she wanted it to be memorable. Lucy tries not to jump to conclusions and give Tim the benefit of the doubt. She won’t make a big deal of it.

Tim is always there and does everything possible he can for her. The best man she knows. Lucy slip on a pair of maternity pants and a short sleeved shirt, hoping the air conditioning at work is fully cool today. She made detective two years ago and has loved every minute. She gave up undercover work after one awful mission. That was not what she wanted every day.

Lucy drives to the station and parks next to Tim’s truck. She gets out of her little SUV and waddles inside. Getting pregnant by a man who’s well over six feet is really kicking her ass these days. Lucy is petrified with how big the baby already is. She isn’t exactly tall and she feels so huge and gross most days.

She settles at her desk, grateful for the cool air blowing down on her. “Hey Lucy.” Lucy almost jumps out of her seat as Angela and Nyla sneak up on her. “Sorry didn’t mean to scare you.”

Lucy blows her hair out of her face. “Sorry. My brain is not braining well this morning. I have not slept well this week with Tim being gone so much.” She has to fight the urge to not break down crying. These damn hormones.

“I know it’s been a long week, but he’ll be Watch Commander soon and have better hours. Are you ready for this one to make an appearance?” Angela points to her belly.

“I am beyond ready, but I’m only at twenty eight weeks. Although, you’d think she would be here next week with how huge I am.” Angela and Nyla share a pointed look. They understand completely how tough pregnancy can be.

“She will be here before you know it. Now, can you look into our suspect?” Nyla shows Lucy who it is and lets her get to work. Lucy can no longer go in the field, her doctor wants her on desk duty. She is worried for Lucy and the baby. It was the best decision. Now, Lucy rides a desk and has helped solve new crimes and unsolved crimes. She’s impressed the big bosses too with all that has been able to get done in such a short amount of time.

Lucy sees Tim and it looks like he’s about to roll out with Metro. He jogs over to her before he goes anywhere. She tries to stand up, but he has to help her. “Hi.” He greets her with a hug, kiss, and places his hand on her belly where he receives a hard kick.

“Mmm hi.” Lucy kisses him. “I missed you this morning.”

“I know. I am so sorry baby. We are so close to getting this guy. We have a location and are about to go get him now.” Lucy looks at him expecting him to say something else and she hates that she is so needy about this today.

“Okay babe. Be safe.” She sighs as he kisses her once more and leaves. Lucy sits back down, willing a tear to fall down her face. He is busy. Don’t be upset Lucy. It’s another day. The thing is, she just wants Tim. She doesn’t need a celebration, but it seems like he has forgotten completely. He is busier than normal, but he never forgets important things. Lucy blows a breath and gets back to work.

Twelve o’clock rolls around and Lucy’s stomach growls. Aaron comes strolling over. “Hey birthday girl! Happy Birthday.” He gives her a hug as best he can. “Do you have time for lunch?” Since Tim’s not back and she was about to head to lunch, she agrees. Aaron is one of her closest friends and will be their daughter’s godfather. Lucy is so grateful he is with them still.

“Where are we going?” Lucy asks. She can see the grin on his face. He has something up his sleeve.

“You’ll see.” She rolls her eyes as he helps her into the shop. Aaron gets into the driver's seat and drives them to Lucy’s favorite burger place. The one he knows she has been craving this entire pregnancy.

“Aaron you are the best!” Lucy squeals. They get out and Aaron makes Lucy sit as he orders their food. It only takes a few minutes and he is setting the food down. “So how’s patrol going?” Lucy asks him.

“It’s good. It’s been nice partnering with Celina. She has become a great cop.” They talk about their days riding together and other crazy stories about patrol.

“Have you heard anything on your results from the detective’s exam?” Lucy inquires. Aaron shakes his head.

“Not yet, but hopefully soon. Then when you come back, we can finally partner up again.” Lucy smiles at that. She can’t wait to have him on her team again.

“It will be the dynamic duo back together.” She smirks as Aaron cleans up their food and helps her up. They head back to the station where Aaron helps her to her desk. “Thanks for lunch Aaron. It means so much to me. I know it’s not anything big, but you’re a good friend.” They share a hug and say goodbye. Lucy gets back to work. Three hours later she finally sees Metro head back from their op. As everyone strolls in, she doesn’t seem Tim.

Lucy slowly gets up and waddles over to the team. “Hey guys.” She manages to get out.

“There’s my favorite soon to be mama.” Mad Dog says as he gives her a hug. “How are you feeling?” Mad Dog has been helping Tim with a lot of things at the house. He is excited for another little girl to be around. Ever since he found out Tim was dating the most badass officer (his words) in the LAPD, he has had a soft spot for her. They’ve become quite close.

“Besides not sleeping, having to pee every five minutes thanks to this one kicking my bladder, and carrying Tim’s mammoth child, I’m great. Thanks for asking.” She says jokingly. “Where’s Tim?”

“He was catching Pine up, but should be in his office.” Lucy says her goodbyes and walks to his office.

She knocks on the door, seeing a bruise on Tim’s face. “Babe. What happened?” She rushes to him, which is of course the slowest walk possible.

“I’m fine. He came out of nowhere. Are you headed home soon?” Lucy nods waiting to see if Tim says anything. “I have a ton of paperwork, but I have the next few days off. My last case with Metro. Glad it’s done.”

Tim stands up and brings Lucy close. “God I miss you. Go home and relax. I won’t be home until later.” Lucy stiffens as he says that and once again has to fight the tears from rolling down her face. “What’s wrong?” He asks immediately.

Lucy won’t make a big deal. “I’m fine. I’ll see you later.” She says short and squeezes his hand before leaving. She heads to her car and gets in before she sobs. She hears a knock a few minutes later and sees Nyla.

“What’s wrong Lucy? Is it that baby?” She is quite concerned.

“No. She is fine. It’s so stupid. It’s nothing.” She wipes the stray tears. Nyla gives her a look and she relents. “Tim forgot my birthday today and I don’t know why I care so much but I do.” She mutters out.

“Oh Lucy. I’m so sorry. Did you say anything?” She shakes her head no as she looks back up.

“No and I don’t plan to. It is just another day and Tim has been so busy. Between work and getting her room done. It’s not his fault. I’m going to head home now.”

Lucy starts her car and drives off. Nyla knows she doesn’t want to make a big deal, but Tim’s an idiot. Yes, he is busy, but that doesn’t mean it’s okay to forget something this important. Nyla finds Angela and tells her what happened. “Idiot.” She says under her breath. They walk to Tim’s office and it's vacated once again. They are called to a double homicide right at that moment.

Lucy arrives home and goes inside. She does not want to do anything except curl in bed and cry. She feels stupid, but Tim never forgets. She goes into their bathroom and runs a hot bath. She strips out of the clothes she was wearing, feeling free and able to breathe. The water feels amazing on her achy muscles. Lucy stays in until the water runs cool. It takes a while, but she finally gets up and wraps a towel around her. Once dry, she grabs one of Tim’s shirts and throws on a pair of her most comfortable panties. At least she can feel close to him this way.

Lucy heads to the nursery and decides to do what she can. It needs to be finished and it’s the least she can do. She puts all the clothes away sorted by months. Then all the other small things. She puts the bedding on the mattress and cleans up the trash. Her room is basically done, except the name on the wall. She rocks in the chair and rocks herself to sleep.

Tim has finally finished debriefing and heads back to his office. It’s eight o’clock and he just wants to get home to Lucy. He misses her. Once he sits down a knock at the door causes a groan. “What?” He barks out, clearly not in the mood for disruptions.

“That is no way to greet us.” Angela quips out.

“Sorry it has been a long week and I just want to get home. What do you two need?” He can see the looks on their faces. “What did someone die and I don’t know?”

Angela goes and smacks him upside the head. “No you dumbass. It’s your fiance's birthday and you didn’t even remember.” Tim’s face drops and goes white.

“What, no.” He looks at his phone. “SHIT! How did I miss this? Did Lucy say something? Is she pissed?”

Nyla goes next. “No, I forced it out of her. She doesn’t want you to be upset Tim. She knows how hard you’ve been working, but I caught her crying. She was devastated but refused to say anything. We know it’s been busy, but please go be with her. Paperwork can wait.”

“Thank you both.” He runs out of his office and to his truck. He makes a few stops before heading home. He feels terrible. He goes into the house and it’s dark. Lucy’s car is home, so he knows she’s here. Tim searches for her before finding her asleep on the rocking chair in the nursery. She has cleaned and organized. He told her not to, but apparently didn’t listen. He kneels on the floor in front of her. “Lucy.” He whispers as he gently shakes her awake. Lucy smiles sleepily.

“Hey. I’m sorry. I guess I was tired.” He can see a forced smile on her face and feels like crap. “I’m glad you’re home.”

“God Lucy. Why didn’t you tell me I was the world’s worst fiancee and forgot your birthday?” He pulls her up and moves her hair out of her face.

“It’s fine Tim. You’ve been so busy and so tired. It’s not a big deal.” He moves her head up so he is staring in her eyes.

“No it isn’t fine. You matter and it’s a day to celebrate. The day you were born, the day I will forever be grateful for. I love you so much. I had a whole day planned out and I ruined it. I’m so sorry.”

“It’s okay Tim. Let's just get some rest okay?” He shakes his head.

“Nope. Come on. He leads her to the kitchen, his hands lingering on whatever parts of her body he can touch.” Lucy gasps and lets a few tears fall. Tim grabbed dinner, a bouquet of sunflowers, and some cupcakes from her favorite bakery.

“Happy Birthday beautiful.” He pulls her in for a kiss while his hands snake under the shirt she’s wearing. “Let's eat dinner and your dessert. I will save mine for later.” He says, wiggling his eyebrows. She rolls her eyes. “I am so sorry Lucy. I know you were upset and you have every right to be.”

“Tim, you have done so much for both of us. It means the world to me. I cleaned her nursery up because you have barely taken care of you.”

“Well today and tomorrow are about you. I am making up for your actual birthday.” They eat dinner and each have a cupcake. Tim had bought her a beautiful gift that he gave to her after taking his dessert, three times. It was a beautiful charm bracelet that had room to grow. He also booked her a day at the spa before their daughter arrived. Tim always took care of her.

“There’s one more thing.” He says as they lay naked both satisfied completely and fully. “We are doing maternity pictures next week.”

Lucy looks up at him in shock. “You said it was dumb.”

“I know, but I want these memories forever. I’ll do it for you baby. I love you both more than anything.”

“I love you too Tim. This turned out to be a pretty great birthday even if you forgot about it.” She joked.

“Well Angela gave me a nice smack upside the head and called me a dumbass.” Lucy giggled.

“I appreciate everything you do Tim for both of us.” She kisses him passionately and Tim decides to take another taste of dessert before they both fall asleep of exhaustion. Tim never forgot another birthday of Lucy’s
