I Can’t Lose You

Summary:

Prompt: Tim is jealous of Emmett and Lucy together. Lucy notices.

Work Text:

Aaron and Lucy received a call about a three car accident. “7-A-19 responding.” Lucy, let's dispatch know. “I hope it’s minor and no one was seriously injured.” She looks at Aaron.

“I hope so too.” He tells her as he speeds to the scene, lights and sirens blaring. They arrive on scene and assess the situation. Five minutes after the paramedics arrive. Lucy sees Bailey and then Emmett. Why is he here? Lucy groans to herself

Bailey takes control. “Three vehicle accident. One minor head injury, but everyone else said they’re fine.” As soon as they go to assess the man who caused the accident grabs a bystander at gunpoint and rushes into a nearby store.

“Shit.” Lucy mutters. “Dispatch. We have a hostage situation. Can you alert Metro?”

“7-A-19, Metro is responding.” Lucy thanks them. Aaron and her wait patiently with their guns raised to make sure he doesn’t try anything dumb. Metro arrives swiftly and Tim rushes over.

“What happened?” He carefully assesses Lucy to make sure she isn’t injured; something he has taken to doing constantly.

“The guy holding the hostage, Emmanuel Melo, caused the accident. Once paramedics arrived, he took a bystander at gunpoint and ran in the store.

Tim looks at Lucy and Aaron. “We ran his name. He committed a robbery earlier today. We need to approach it carefully and precisely.” Tim goes over the plan and everyone gets into position. Within a half hour, the suspects in custody and the bystander is checked out by the paramedics.

Tim’s finishing up while Lucy and Aaron wait for their suspect to be checked out before bringing him to the station. As she’s waiting, Emmett approaches and initiates conversation.

“Uh, hey Lucy. How have you been?” He asks.

Lucy looks up at him, unsure of why he’s asking her. “Oh. Hey Emmett. I am better than ever. You?” She tries to keep things short.

“I’m great. Tim doesn’t seem any different. Is he still treating you awful?” It takes everything in Lucy to not tell Emmett off.

“Tim isn’t awful and never was. He was training me and I’m the cop I am today because of him. He was gruff, but he is a good man underneath it all, but yes he has changed over the years. In the best way.” She says defensively. Aaron overhears and snickers under his breath. Lucy kicks his shin.

“I didn’t mean to say anything negative. I just remember a few incidents. Sorry.” She accepts it and he continues on. “So I heard you’re single.” Emmett says and Lucy is pretty shocked by this. “I’d love to grab dinner if you’re free.”

A weird look forms on her face; a half smile. Before she can say anything she can sense Tim behind her. Lucy can see his face and he’s angry. “Sergeant Chen. Don’t you have a suspect to bring back to the station and paperwork to complete?” He growls out.

“The suspect is almost done being looked at sir.” She replies snarky.

“Well  go check on him and flirt on your own damn time.” He whips around and walks back to his team. Lucy takes a deep breath as Bailey hands them the suspect back.

“He’s all set to be transported.” Bailey tells them. They thank her and walk to the shop.

Emmett looks at Bailey. “Do you have something to say?” She asks.

“He’s even more of a dick than he was during her rookie year.” He says annoyed.

“No Emmett. You just flirted with his girlfriend in front of him and that was jealousy.”

“I’m sorry, WHAT?” He shouts gaining attention. He speaks more quietly. “They’re dating now?” He is confused.

“For over a year now. Tim is very protective. Lucy gets annoyed, but those two are so in love. Just don’t bother Lucy. I don’t even know why you did after you dumped her by text.” Emmett gulps and apologizes. They get in the ambulance and head off.

Aaron looks at Lucy as they drive to the station. He can sense she’s upset, but leaves it alone for now. He knows Lucy does best processing on her own and won’t let it affect her work. They arrive at the station and Aaron takes him in for processing. Lucy quietly makes her way to her office. She slips in and cracks the door. It’s hard to not let a sob out. She’s pissed at Tim for embarrassing her.

Right now, Lucy’s at work. She has to focus on that. This small accident has turned into a paperwork nightmare thanks to the hostage situation. Aaron is working in his paperwork now that the suspect is booked and in holding.

Tim storms back into the station. He is angry. Lucy was flirting with Emmett. I always knew someone better would come along. He chastises himself. He sees Lucy in her office and almost walks away, but he sees take her phone out and answer a call. She is smiling and laughing. Tim snaps because he is a jealous idiot who’s not thinking clearly.

He doesn’t bother knocking and slams her door shut. Lucy looks up and purses her lips together.

“What Tim?” She says bluntly.

“Really? That’s all you have to say? I see you all chummy with you ex and that’s it.”

Lucy pinches the bridge of her nose. “I was NOT chummy. He asked me questions Tim. You’re being a stubborn, jealous, hard headed idiot and couldn’t see how uncomfortable I was.”

“I am NOT jealous Lucy. Is it because he’s younger?” Tim regrets asking or saying any of this, but he’s frustrated. Lucy is the love of his life and he’s scared one day she will change her mind about him.

“Get out please. I’ve got a headache and paperwork to do.” She demands.

Tim slumps out and slams the door causing eyes to stare up at him. He slips to his office and shuts his door. God she’s right. I’m jealous. I hate when men flirt and it happens often because she’s so damn gorgeous. Tim’s worried he’s messed it all up, but he’s still not happy. He’s been carrying a ring around for two months looking for the right way to propose. There’s a small part of him scared she won’t say yes.

Tim shakes his thoughts while starting his own paperwork.

Aaron and Lucy finish their own. “Hey Aaron. Would you mind dropping me at home?” She asks quietly.

“Of course Lucy.” She hands her paperwork to Grey and goes to change. Aaron’s waiting outside the locker rooms. They walk to his car quietly. She didn’t even tell Tim she was leaving.

Aaron looks at her as he drives. “Are you okay Lucy?” He says it so softly and gently.

“I will be. Sorry about Tim today.” She chews on her bottom lip.

“It’s fine. It was a difficult scene.” Aaron tries to reason. He doesn’t ask anything else on the ride home.

“Thanks for the ride. See you Monday. They have the weekend off.

“Bye Lucy.” She walks inside and disarms the house. She lets Kojo out and fills his bowls. Once he’s done she walks into their bedroom. Lucy decides on a hot shower since she didn’t take one at end of shift. The steaming water falls onto her skin and she is washes off this dreadful day. Forty minutes later, in a pair of leggings and one of Tim’s shirts, she is on the couch. Her arms around her knees and she sits in silence.

Soon enough the front door opens and Tim heads inside. She can see he’s angry, but relieved. “You didn’t tell me you were coming home.” The relief evident in his voice.

“Well after how you acted today, I figured it was best.”

“Really Lucy? You’re mad at me.”

“Tim you embarrassed me both on scene and at the station. You let jealousy get the best of you Tim. I’m a damn sergeant now. I can take care of myself like I’ve been doing for years.” She yells out at him.

“Flirting on work time isn’t professional. We were working a scene.” Its weak and Tim knows it.

“I was NOT flirting and you’d notice if you stopped being jealous for two seconds. I love you Tim, but this has got to stop!” She is red in the face and shaking. She sees his face drop and she moves closer.

“What is going on with you? Even when you get jealous, it’s never this bad.” She is gentle with her approach.

“God Lucy. I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop. I’m older and divorced. You can have anyone and somehow you chose me. I am grateful every day, but I am petrified of losing you.” Lucy sees how vulnerable he looks right now.

“I’m not going anywhere. You can’t act this way.”

“God Luce. I am scared. You’re right I let myself get jealous and out of control. I’m so in love with you. I have been carrying a ring for months, but I’m scared you’ll say no. You’re it for me Lucy. I can’t lose you. I won’t survive.”

Lucy is in shock. “You want to propose? To me?” She squeaks it out.

Tim realizes what he said. “Crap.” He mutters. “Yes Lucy. I have tried to find the right time and can’t.”

“Ask me.” She says as she snakes her hands around him. He doesn’t believe it’s real.

“Marry me?” He says quietly. He had a whole speech, but this is typical of them.

Lucy looks into his eyes. “Yes Tim. I will marry you. I love every piece of you even when you’re jealous and stubborn as hell.”

Tim gulps as he places the simple, yet elegant engagement ring. “I love you baby. Thank you for making me the happiest man alive.” The emotion is evident in his voice.

“By the way. I do like jealous Tim sometimes. It can be quite the turn on.” She says as she kisses him and wiggles her hips beneath his hands. She grabs his hand and moves them into the bedroom.

Tim has a few more moments of jealousy, but he keeps them calmer than he has before. Emmett never bothers them again.
