hazy reasoning

Summary:

Mark forgets an important piece of information while forming an otherwise brilliant plan to stay comfortable and warm.

Notes:

This idea has been in my head since — and I looked this up — 12/17/2020.

Work Text:

Mark was sleeping decadently. His head rested on a perfectly fluffed feather pillow. His silk sheets and soft blankets, which were arranged perfectly to keep out the chill of the night, formed a cozy cocoon for him to cuddle up with his partner. It was the kind of sleep that left a little smile on a person’s face because their body is just so comfortable and their mind is filled with only pleasant dreams.

This meant it was especially tragic when Mark’s bliss was slowly interrupted by an overfull bladder.

Mark, in his partially-awake haze, knew three things:
1. He was so, so comfortable.
2. He was not going to be able to hold it through the night, and even if he tried, the fullness would soon ruin his perfect comfort.
3. If he got up and went to the toilet, he would never, ever get this comfortable again.

Clearly, there was only one responsible course of action in this situation. But the floor would be so cold between Mark and the bathroom, and he just knew that when he came back, his back would find some way to hurt, or the pillow would be uncomfortable against his ear, or his partner would roll over and he’d be left with no place to put his arm. Perhaps, he wouldn’t be able to get back to sleep at all.

It was an unthinkable risk. In Mark’s sleepy head, a different course of action seemed much more appealing. After all, Mark was spoiled with love. His partners never got too annoyed with him — as he’d well tested — even if he did something like, say, wet the bed on purpose.

And, if he said it was an accident, they couldn’t get annoyed at all. He could wake up to comfort and cuddles and help with cleaning up. Yes, this option was far and away better than braving the dark and the cold just to use a toilet for no benefit at all.

Decision made, the only bit of tension left in Mark relaxed, allowing his bladder to empty. As the taut, full feeling subsided and the warmth around him grew, the small smile returned to his face. Mark drifted off again mere moments after his stream stopped — completely and totally content.

Through until morning, body heat and the covers around him protected him from getting cold or clammy. His partner stirred first, as a result, and quickly noticed the thing Mark had been so content with.

And, although Mark wasn’t so completely loathe to wake now, it was quite a shock to hear his name — “Mark?” — kindly, and in the voice of, yes, his partner, but not the one he’d truly thought he’d been sleeping beside.

“…Damien?” Mark said, plainly shocked. His face went red and, self consciously, he tugged the covers up, hiding what they both already knew was underneath. Damien often spent the night, but Mark had somehow utterly forgotten that he’d done so this night.

Mark’s nesting partner sat up, as well, with a yawn — on the other side of Damien. “What’s wrong?”

“I, um, I wet the bed,” Mark ‘confessed,’ a little too quickly. Although an actor, Mark was not particularly good at making things up on the fly — and just after waking up, his ability to sell the lie was at an all time low.

They started to put two and two together, exchanging a look with Damien, who had a smile on his face.

“You were too cozy to get up, hmm?” Damien teased.

“N-no, it wasn’t that — it was an accident,” Mark tried to insist. His face remained red with embarrassment to even make the argument. In the light of day, sitting on his wet sheets, his plan didn’t seem the panacea it had in the night.

“Normally, I’d believe that,” they said, making Mark blush more deeply, “but not when you’re more shocked to find Damien here than you are to have wet the bed.”

Mark opened his mouth to defend himself, but Damien teased, “Or is my staying over really the less common occurrence these days?”

“No,” Mark insisted. “…Can we just get cleaned up?” He’d embarrassed himself and would like to put it behind him now.

“You know we love you,” Damien reminded him, leaning in for a hug and a kiss. “And I forgive you — even if it was on purpose.”

“…It was cold,” Mark mumbled, just loud enough to hear. His partners laughed at the admission, and nestled into Damien’s embrace, even Mark smiled at his own expense. His plan may not have worked out exactly as intended, but he could still get all the affection he wanted.
