They Don't Die at the End

Chapter 2: Coda: Praise for Gojo Satoru

Notes:

this is the most boring coda that could've been published and I'm aware of that. It's a mix of fake readers and press reviews I didn't have the chance to insert in the oneshot, and that I somehow found in my drive formatted as an actual book praise sheet?? And I'm a book nerd so here they are.

Chapter Text

PRAISE FOR GOJO SATORU

Parts of your soul I cannot recognise

"Spellbinding debut. Unputdownable"

"Transfixing, transformative, translucid. This novel redefines loss and identity; it is transhuman."

"Do you know who you are? The narrator doesn't either, much like he doesn't know his own love interest. A magical story that will undo your understanding of love, grief, and who you were this morning."

Okinawa Blues

"You would think that the most anticipated second book for a decade would leave you with a bitter taste of disappointment after all the hype. I am pleased to report that this is not the case: the taste is putrid like the hate in my soul for this book. Don't read this."

"Beautiful. A cross between a YA summer romance and Don Quixote. Transcends genre and expectations: a new literary classic."

"Bro, why? 5 stars"

"Phenomenal. This book crawls into your soul and your heart and it never leaves."

Six Eyes

"A timely novel for the times. Don't sleep on this one"

"If a novel could punch you in the gut, this would. A terrifying tale of the dangers of complacency and the horrors of war. You never think this could be you, but as you keep reading you realise that it absolutely could. Let this be a lesson to us all"

"I could do without the body horror, but the rest of this is tip top. Fun reading."

"Honestly I picked this up because of the author, he's like, so hot. But this book is so weird. but yet so good?"

"Compelling reading. A real page turner"

Violet Scopes

"After a range of wildly successful novels, Gojo Satoru proves he has real mastery of the short form too. Each story is delicious, moreish, and utterly delightful."

"A beautiful collection. Each story is distinct, and yet there is an overarching theme of longing throughout. I feel like I've witnessed somebody's most private thoughts."

"The author is clearly going through something, maybe these should have been kept in a drawer. Do your therapy in private"

"Poetry, if poetry could be prose."

"Fantastic. Each story opens your eyes and your mind to new possibilities and plays with language."

minimum infinite

"There's a metaphor here so powerful that you feel this constant need to look away. I read this through my fingers as one would a horror movie. Is this a horror movie? no. It's a love story. it doesn't have to make sense, just read it."

"I'm losing my mind over this book. I have followed Gojo’s career for years now and this is the book that finally finished me off. I'm dead. I'm gone. I'm the monster. Don't touch me."

"You thought you'd experienced something weird after Six Eyes, think again. Wondrous."

"Anybody else get hungry while reading this?"

"Who knew I was touch starved, not me. Fuck you, Gojo."

no curse more twisted

"Have you ever had a regret so powerful that you get trapped in a cube outside time and space? I did, this morning, when I accidentally spilled all of my freshly brewed coffee on the floor. I'm so glad I'm normal."

"You know those people who say things like 'that's not literary fiction, that's science fiction, the author's just a snob'? I'm here to tell you that this is both and you all can shut up"

"A literary masterpiece. The genderless characters are a stroke of genius, driving home how universal the themes in this novel are, and how we are all affected by them even when we pretend we aren't."

"A pure marvel."

"Another classic from Gojo-sensei. if you loved his first book, you will love this one."

“Gojo Satoru never disappoints. This book could be made into a film, loved it!”

Notes:

Thanks so much for reading 'till the end! Any comment would make my day and Christmas much better. If you like, please leave an unhinged endorsement for Gojo's books because they also made my day. Do your worse and Happy Christmas everyone x

Some more notes:
- The line "This will be my last confession / I love you never felt like any blessing" is from Heavy in Your Arms by Florence and The Machine
- I used this article as inspo for Gojo
- "It’s how loud I am against the silence of you. How my own breath makes your silence inaudible." wanted to be a reference to this line in Where our Blue Is: "The asphalt reflecting the cicada singing / makes the silence of you inaudible."
- I did too much research for this fic but all the references to magazines, radio, tv, literary prizes etc in Japan are either fictitious or pulled from a listicle on Google - apologies for any mistakes there!
- Gojo does not have the right profile for Vogue. However, I found it funny putting Vogue as one of the outlets chasing for him for personal reasons so here we are (sorry!)

EDIT: I'm working on a fully fleshed version of this one spanning all 12 years of pining. Stay tuned :)
