Work Text:
Lila watched with jealous eyes as Adrien paused mid-conversation with Nino to leap in front of the main stairs of the school and catch Marinette just as the klutz tripped over her own foot. Lila sneered. Stupid Marinette, always getting attention. Always getting Adrien’s attention. That rich piece of eye candy was supposed to be fawning over her not that goody-two-shoes!
When it came to people tripping and falling, Adrien seemed to have some sort of sixth sense. He was always right there, ready to offer a steady hand or a spectacular catch, the latter usually in Marinette’s case. It was uncanny. He often appeared out of no where or started moving before the person knew they were going to trip or stumble. Lila didn’t know how he did it, but she wanted him to focus that skill on her. And she knew just how to do it.
Lila waited until their last lesson concluded to carry out her plan. After Adrien caught her, she could convince him she was so traumatized she needed him to walk her home. After that, she would turn on the charm, they would start dating, and Lila would be rich and famous and everyone would be jealous of her. Especially Marinette. Lila couldn’t wait to rub her victory in the girl’s face. Lila wanted to see her cry.
When the bell rang, Lila dutifully packed up her bag and started a meaningless conversation with Rose. She wanted it to look like she was so engrossed in their conversation that she wasn’t looking where she was going. It would make her magnificent fall seem more realistic.
It was almost time. Adrien was standing, talking to a stammering Marinette and Lila was just a few steps away. She wanted it to happen in front of Marinette too, so the brat would see that only Lila belonged in Adrien’s arms. Four steps away. Three more, two more, one more, showtime.
Lila hooked her left foot over her right one on her next stride, tripping herself in the most effective way possible. Her “startled” yelp caught the attention of the whole class, and every head turned her way. She flailed her arms, acting like she couldn’t find her balance and flung her bag so she could get Adrien to help her pick up her things afterwards. The ground was rushing ever closer. ‘It’s now or never, Adrien!' Lila thought in the split second before everything was over, 'Catch me and make all my dreams come true!’
Now, the class had gotten used to Adrien always scrambling to catch someone. No one had moves like Adrien. Like Marinette’s crazy falls, he’s had some crazy saves. He’s made catches no one thought possible. Heck, Marinette hasn’t hit the ground in a month, which was a new record for her. Sure, the class still helped when they could, but due to a little mishap with Kim and Alix and another one of their bets, the class knew not to get in Adrien's way when he was on a mission. They had come to rely on him to catch them. They sort of expected it, now. And because of that, nobody moved to help Lila, because they knew Adrien would leap into action.
Or rather, they thought Adrien would leap into action. Instead, he just watched as Lila fell face-first down the remaining stair and launch her bag right out the open window.
