Work Text:
What could be worse than a humorless and cold person? A humorless and cold witch.
When Wanda joined the Avengers, you had already been a part of it for a few years. And it must be said what is, you did not see with a very good eye her arrival. After all, she had been your enemy first. It was okay to be wary. Besides, you didn't like her cold, hostile demeanor at all.
Of course, you understood that her brother's death had shaken her. You could also understand that it had changed her. She had just lost her twin. But that in no way excused her behavior towards you. She hated you. And she made you understand it.
Even if you didn't like the brunette, you didn't shout it from the rooftops. And you weren't telling her how much she could annoy you either. You knew how to stay dignified and polite. However, she didn't seem able to. She didn't hesitate to throw her venom at you all day long. And it was unbearable.
It was as unbearable for you as it was for the other Avengers. Only, even though they were well aware that Wanda was the only one voicing her annoyance with you loud and clear, they believed you were responsible for the situation. And that disappointed you. After so many years with them, didn't they know you?
What disappointed you the most was that even the Avengers you were closest to, like Natasha or Steve, didn't believe you when you told them you weren't responsible for the situation. And that amused Wanda. She liked to see you in the place of the culprit. Until she realized that it really hurt you.
One evening you walked into the room where all the Avengers were meeting to watch movies and as soon as they saw you all the Avengers looked at you annoyed. You didn't understand why they looked at you like that. You had done absolutely nothing. It was only when you saw the smirk on Wanda's lips that you understood. Immediately, tears came to your eyes and you left the room to take refuge in your room. And Wanda had seen it all. And that made her question herself.
A few minutes later, Wanda found herself outside your door. She knocked twice and you begged her to leave. You didn't want to talk to anyone. No one ever listened to you anyway.
“Please, [Y/N], let me in.”
When you recognized the witch's voice, you gave a humorless laugh. How dare she stand in front of your door when it was because of her that you had taken refuge in your room?
“Certainly not,” you finally said dryly and Wanda clenched her teeth.
She was aware that it was her fault that you were sad tonight.
“[Y/N]-”
“Go away!” you suddenly yelled, “You don't understand when I talk to you?! Just go!”
Your voice was broken and yet it was easy to identify the anger you were feeling.
Determined not to let you mope, Wanda opened the door with her powers. She found you curled up on your bed, your eyes filled with tears.
When you realized that the witch was in front of you, you lifted your head to look at her with all the hatred you felt for her tonight. But your gaze only convinced Wanda to approach you. You saw her put an arm towards you and it only made your anger worse.
“I swear if you touch me-”
You were interrupted by the violent touch of Wanda's hand against your cheek. She had just slapped you.
“Don’t you want to stop being stubborn?!” she asked you, furious. “For once I make the effort to approach you, you can't help but be unbearable!”
Immediately you straightened up, ignoring the pain that consumed your cheek. “No way you’re saying that! You’re the one who just slapped me and I am the one unbearable?!”
“Exactly!” Wanda exclaimed, raising her voice.
“You know what Maximoff? You can fuck yourself, I don't want your pity.”
“Little bitch,” was the only thing Wanda answered before hurrying out of your room.
You drop back onto your bed, rubbing your cheek. This time the tears that slid down your cheeks were tears of anger.
That night, Wanda didn't sleep all night. She spent all her hours listening to your sobs from the other side of your door. She resented having succumbed to her rage yet again.
For several months, things continued like this. You locked yourself in your room every night to cry without anyone bothering you. Wanda would wake up in the middle of the night to find herself outside your door, listening to you sob. Because as long as she heard you, that meant you weren't dead.
To all of the Avengers, it was obvious that you and Wanda hated each other. It was obvious that Wanda couldn't help but make you feel it. It was also evident that you were closing in on yourself more and more. But it wasn't until you ended up spending three affiliate days without leaving your room that they realized that this was hurting you. And it was Natasha who tried to pick up the pieces.
Natasha opened the door to your room without knocking. She wasn't surprised to find you sitting against your window. She knew you well enough to know that looking at the horizon helped you relax. But the sight pained her because she knew it was also a bit of her fault, as much as that of all the other Avengers, and even more so of Wanda.
“[Y/N/N]?”
“Don't nickname me.”
The tone of your voice was harsh, which made Natasha flinch slightly.
The redhead approached you and when she was next to you she began to scrutinize you.
“What do you want Natasha?”
“Tell you I'm sorry.”
You turned your gaze to Natasha. She seemed sincere. You sighed. “It doesn’t matter.”
“On the contrary,” Natasha contradicted. “Last I heard I am your best friend, so I should have realized that the situation was hurting you.”
“It’s not the situation that hurts me, it's the doubts you all have about me. You all held me responsible for Wanda's attitude. Like I asked her to hate me.”
“She doesn't hate you.”
“Of course she does! She made it very clear to me, believe me.”
Natasha noticed the sadness deep in your eyes.
“I thought you didn't like her, either.”
You shrugged your shoulders, returning your gaze to the horizon.
“So why does it bother you so much that she acts like this to you?”
“It’s just tiring,” you replied, “No matter how hard I held back all my venom and tried, she always hated me. She always told me the most awful things. I don't know what I did to her to deserve this…”
“You like her?”
“I’m tired. I can't keep on fighting with her anymore.”
Natasha cocked her head to the side. “You didn't answer my question.”
“Which one?”
“Do you like her?”
“Who? Wanda?”
Natasha nodded and you looked away again. You refused to answer this question. Because the answer had to be obvious. But it wasn't.
“You like her,” Natasha confirmed for you. “That’s why it hurts you so much.”
“Is the interrogation over? I would like to be alone.”
“Alright, I'm leaving. But promise me you'll come and eat with us.”
“Yeah,” you muttered.
Natasha smiled at you and left your room. Now she knew why you were so sad that Wanda hates you.
After realizing that you liked Wanda more than you wanted to admit, Natasha took it upon herself to reconcile you and the witch. And contrary to what she thought, it was easier than expected.
Wanda was in her room when she heard Natasha call her. So the witch left her room to join the former assassin.
“Natasha? Did you call me?”
“Yes,” the redhead shrugged her head, “I want to talk to you about something.”
“What is it about?”
“[Y/N].”
Immediately, Wanda swallowed, fearing what Natasha was about to say to her.
“You know, she sees the situation between you very badly. It really hurts her.”
“It hurts her? She hates me,” Wanda replied, crossing her arms.
“Funny, she says the same about you.”
Wanda raised her eyebrows in surprise. “Does she think I hate her?”
“That's what everyone thinks, Wanda. You keep proving it.”
Wanda looked down.
“You are both complicated and you both have a difficult past. You look more alike than you think,” Natasha said calmly, “And I'm sure that with a little effort and a fair bit of persistence, you might get along just fine.”
“I like her…” Wanda hissed.
“I know.”
“It’s just that she's so stubborn and silent that it annoys me! Of all the Avengers, she's the only one I can't pinpoint. Her thoughts are always silent, I never hear a thing…”
“That’s what makes you interested. And to protect yourself from this attraction, you preferred to act as if you hated her.”
“I didn't think it would go that far.”
“You’re both young,” Natasha reassured, “You still need a little help, that's all.”
Wanda nodded shyly.
“Do you want to go talk to her? I would like you to make peace.”
“Okay,” Wanda nodded, “I'll try.”
“Thank you.”
And Wanda actually tried. She found you in your room where you spent all your free time and she tried to take a step towards you. To her surprise, you greeted her kindly. In fact, you were expecting her. You too wanted to make peace with the witch. You were tired of your constant disagreement and you wanted to start over. Her too.
“I’m sorry,” Wanda confessed, sitting on the end of your bed.
“Me too.”
“I know I hurt you… It wasn't my intention. It was a defense.”
“To defend yourself from what?”
“You…”
You frowned, confused. “Did you want to protect yourself from me?”
Wanda shyly nodded.
“Why?” you asked, staring at the brunette.
“Because you are different. I never hear your thoughts, you are always silent.”
“And it’s bad?”
“Not at all. It's calming. But very unusual.”
You were starting to feel more comfortable, you understood that Wanda was not mean. That she too wanted to make peace.
“I shouldn't have been so mean to you, [Y/N]. I'm so sorry.”
“Stop it, this is in the past.”
Wanda laughed softly and you looked at her intrigued.
“You really don't hold a grudge yourself,” she smirked.
“No, indeed.”
Wanda cleared her throat. “So, um… Friends?”
You smiled at the witch and nodded. “Friends.”
After that, the atmosphere at the compound was much calmer and more cheerful. You and Wanda weren't arguing anymore, much to the delight of the other Avengers. You even had a good time together, between friends. And you got to know each other.
Very quickly you discovered a lot of commonalities and it brought you closer to each other. You appreciated the other's presence more and more and everyone was realizing that. Natasha knew there was something deeper between you and Wanda. Even if you and Wanda didn't know about it yet.
It wasn't until two years later that you realized that your feelings for the witch had changed. You saw her differently. You found yourself remembering every little detail like Wanda's favorite color, her favorite outfits, her favorite food, how she smells, and the times of day her eyes sparkled the most. You didn't quite understand why you were holding it back or even why you were jealous when Vision was spending too much time with Wanda. After all she was just your friend, right?
But after a while, you realized that you had fallen in love with the witch. What you didn't know, however, was that she, too, had fallen in love with you. You thought that with a story like yours, there was no way Wanda could share your feelings. You were convinced she saw you as a friend and that was it. So you decided to keep feelings to yourself and never confess to Wanda that she was more than just a friend to you now.
Only, sometimes your mouth spoke faster than your brain reflected...
It was a February evening and you were sitting on the roof with Wanda. She had convinced you to look at the stars with her and after minutes of ‘please’ and soft eyes, you gave in.
“Did you see how the stars sparkle tonight?” Wanda asked, looking up at the sky.
You shrug your shoulders. “They always sparkle, don't they?”
“Yes,” Wanda laughed, “But tonight they are shining brightly.”
“You think? I don't see the difference.”
“It’s because you don't care about the beauty of the world.”
“Not true.”
“Oh yes ?” Wanda smirked, “So what's beautiful tonight?”
Without thinking too much you answered. “You.”
Wanda looked surprised at your answer. She blushed.
Seeing that she wasn't responding, you started to feel uncomfortable. “S-Sorry…”
“No, don't apologize,” Wanda hissed with a smile. “It’s very sweet.”
You smiled shyly, a little embarrassed.
Finally, after a few seconds, Wanda resumed her monologue about the constellations and that's exactly when you let your feelings rush.
“I have feelings for you.”
Wanda's voice choked in her throat the moment she heard your confession. She looked back at you to see that you were already looking at her. Your eyes were bright and you weren't shaking. You were telling the truth.
“You what?” Wanda couldn't believe it.
“I love you, Wanda.”
“I…”
“You don't have to answer anything. But it makes me feel good to finally confess it to you.”
Wanda came to her senses and looked at you tenderly. “I love you too [Y/N].”
“Really???”
Your expression of surprise and happiness made Wanda laugh. “Yes,” she smiled, “Really.”
And it was after that night under the stars that you and Wanda started dating. And so, you were the happiest woman in the world.
Three years had passed and you and Wanda still had the perfect love. You were happy and close. You trusted each other but were jealous whenever someone was too tactile with one of you. You were still so in love, if not more. You even had plans for the future. You were talking about buying a house together and starting a family. You were thinking about life after the Avengers, when you decided to retire and leave the world of heroes. And even if you knew it wouldn't be for now, you were still talking about it. It was the life you dreamed of. But alas, life can take back your dreams in a second...
Today was an ordinary day for you. You woke up in the arms of Wanda who was stroking your hair. The witch had been awake for several minutes and she was quietly watching you sleep. When you opened your eyes to her, you instantly smiled at her.
“Hello you,” Wanda told you, smiling.
“Hello…”
You yawned slightly, which made Wanda laugh.
“Still tired?”
“Yes,” you replied, “And it's your fault.”
Wanda rolled her eyes, amused.
You stretched and then tried to stand up but Wanda hugged you tighter.
“Stay a little longer,” she whispered against your hair.
“Um... I would like it a lot, but we have a mission.”
Wanda sighed as she released you. “Alright, let's get up.”
You got out of bed and slipped in the shower before getting dressed. After you, Wanda did the same. Then you made your way to the meeting room where the other Avengers were already waiting for you.
When you were all settled in, Steve began to walk you through the ins and outs of today's mission. Apparently, this was a simple mission. So you shouldn't have any problems. It reassured you, you didn't want to risk your life today. When everyone was ready, you took the Quinjet to reach the Hydra base you were to search.
Once there, everyone got into position and you and the Avengers infiltrated the base. It seemed abandoned and that made it easier for you. On Steve's orders, you left with Natasha and Clint on your own, while the others investigated other rooms. After long minutes of research, it seemed like you had all finished your work. Natasha, Clint and you hadn't found anything interesting but Bucky and Sam had all warned that they had found something.
“I think we can go home,” Steve announced over the coms.
Natasha and Clint looked at each other then nodded. When they started to turn back, you followed them. You couldn't wait to come home and have some one-on-one time with Wanda. However, all did not go as planned.
“We have a problem.”
You immediately recognized Wanda's voice. She sounded panicked and you started to worry. Sensing your nervousness, Natasha moved in front of you. She was about to speak when you were cut off again by Wanda's voice echoing through your earbuds.
“I need help!” Wanda yelled, “[Y/N]!“
Then suddenly none of you heard anything. Except for a loud explosion sound. And your heart seemed to stop.
Immediately, you started running to find Wanda, Natasha and Clint on your heels.
“Steve, we're looking for her!” Natasha warned over the coms.
“Alright,” the blond nodded, “Find her and bring her back.”
And you found her.
When you got to the site of the explosion, you first saw debris. Then your gaze fell on Wanda. She was passed out and badly injured. So you knelt by her side and took her hand in yours.
“Wanda… Baby, hold on,” you begged, “Come on, stay with me.”
Very quickly, Natasha and Clint joined you and they indicated to Steve that you had found Wanda. Steve asked them to bring her back to the jet so you could come in and heal her.
But you refused to let go of Wanda's hand. So Natasha pulled you hard and Clint lifted Wanda up to carry her to the jet. Natasha helped you up and you followed Clint to the jet. Your heart was racing, you were afraid of losing Wanda. The love of your life.
As soon as you arrived, Wanda was directly taken care of by the doctors. Natasha kept you company until Wanda could receive visitors. You knew she would be okay but you couldn't help but worry. And you were right.
When Wanda opened her eyes, she was first blinded by the lights in the recovery room. Once her eyesight adjusted to the lighting, she gazed around the room. It was then that her gaze fell on you. And when you smiled at her, with tears in your eyes, she frowned.
“[Y/N]? What are you doing here? Where am I?”
You wiped away your tears before answering. “You were injured during the mission. You are in the recovery room.”
“I was injured? When?”
“Today,” you replied, “A few hours ago.”
Wanda took a moment to assimilate the information you had just given her and then frowned again.
“What are you doing here?”
Her voice was harsh and you didn't understand why. “What do you mean?”
“I want you to leave. I don't want you here.”
Wanda's request broke your heart. You froze for a moment before getting up, confused. “OK…”
Wanda watched you go without saying a word and then sighed. What were you doing at her bedside?
Natasha found you in your room, in tears. She immediately hugged you. You were sobbing and your tears flowed in profusion. You were heartbroken.
“I’m sorry [Y/N],” Natasha whispered quietly.
You didn't have the strength to thank her. You could only cry.
After a moment, Natasha broke your embrace and looked at you.
“I spoke to the doctors.”
You lifted your head to look at your friend.
“They say Wanda has amnesia. She forgot five years of her life.”
The news made you shiver. You knew exactly what Wanda's amnesia meant.
“So… So she doesn't remember…”
“No,” Natasha sighed, “I'm sorry.”
Again you burst into tears. Natasha hugged you again to comfort you. In vain.
A doctor had just explained the situation to Wanda. She was completely lost. She had just learned that she had lost her memory and therefore 5 years of her life.
“So I forgot everything?” She asked the doctor.
“No not everything. 5 years, only.”
5 years. 5 years only. But 5 years was huge. And Wanda had no memory of it. Not even a trace.
“Am I going to get my memory back?”
The doctor sighed. “I would like to tell you yes, but we are not sure.”
Wanda swallowed. “Ok thank you.”
The doctor left the room and Wanda let her head fall on the pillow.
Steve entered the room in turn. He looked at Wanda for a moment, silently, then settled into the chair next to her bed.
“How are you feeling?” the blond asked.
“Shaken.”
“I understand.”
Wanda turned her head to Steve. “What did I miss?”
Steve tilted his head to the side, a little confused.
“I've lost 5 years of memories, Steve. What did I miss? What have I been through?”
Steve smiles sadly before taking a deep breath.
“Lots of things,” he said, “I don't know if it's my place to tell you everything.”
“I want to know what my life is like today,” Wanda confided, “Please.”
Steve sighed as he stood up. “Take a rest, okay? We'll tell you what you need to know when you're ready.”
It was with these words that he left the room.
Two months had passed and Wanda had found no memory back. However, she had resumed the course of her life, as she would have lived it 5 years earlier.
You didn't have the courage to face her because you knew she wouldn't look at you with the love she usually looked at you with. You knew she had no memory of your love affair and it tore your heart apart. But since you weren't able to see her laughing with Sam or shyly flirting with Vision, you spent your days avoiding bumping into her. And frankly, it didn't surprise anyone. All of the Avengers knew that if they were you, they would be as bad as you.
Wanda wasn't surprised you avoided her either. Only she thought you were doing it for other reasons. Since she only remembered the time when you hated each other. So she found your behavior normal. She didn't ask herself any questions.
No one among the Avengers had seen fit to tell her about your current relationship. They knew inside the witch's head you hated each other. So they preferred to keep your love a secret. To your great misfortune.
Natasha thought about talking to Wanda one day like she had done a long time ago, but you stopped her.
“Don't go talk to her.”
“Why?” the redhead wondered.
“She doesn't remember loving me,” you sadly announced, “There's no point in her knowing that I love her.”
“[Y/N]…”
“Nat, drop it.”
Natasha nodded sadly and you made your way to your room, making sure to avoid Wanda.
But despite everything, Natasha hated to see you so sad. And she was mad at Wanda for not remembering you the way she should. She resented her for being happy without you. But she knew you would resent her if she decided to talk to Wanda despite your request. So she fell silent.
And the months passed and piled on without anything rekindling Wanda's memory. Without anything bringing her back to you. And you, you suffered in silence. You saw her slip through your fingers without you being able to do anything about it. And you didn't want to do anything, you wanted to leave Wanda alone. You wanted her to be happy. Even though you hated the idea that she could be without you. You just didn't want her to find out that you were together from anyone other than herself. You just wanted her to remember it.
However, when you saw that Vision was taking advantage of the situation to get closer to Wanda, you were getting mad. How dare he? He knew you and Wanda were in love! But he also knew she didn't remember it. The robot's actions made you furious. And it was because of your jealousy that Wanda ended up learning who you really were to her.
You were in the kitchen, a bottle of water in your hand, watching Wanda and Vision intently, laughing in the living room. You found the robot far too close to the witch. You didn't like the way he constantly touched her arm. You didn't like the way Wanda laughed at all of Vision's stupid jokes. You were terribly jealous. And you hated it.
Several times, Vision met your gaze. And each time, he provoked you by getting closer to Wanda. You wanted to strangle him. He knew it.
Wanda had her back to you so she couldn't see that your gaze was fixed on her. She also couldn't see how your eyes reflected your jealousy.
When the witch apologized to Vision to go to the bathroom, you took the opportunity to talk to the robot. You walked over to him and sat down where Wanda had previously sat.
“You’re doing it on purpose, aren't you?” you asked sharply.
“Sorry?”
Obviously, Vision was playing the innocent. You didn't know he was capable of doing this. He was only supposed to be a stupid robot.
“Don't play the innocent, Vision. I can see your little game.”
“Miss [Y/L/N], I don't play any game.”
His manners annoyed you. You wanted to throw that toaster out the window.
“Wanda doesn't remember you or your love affair,” Vision continued, “I think therefore I have a right to take a chance.”
“It’s a joke, right?” You exclaimed, angry.
“Not at all.”
Furious, you got up and started to shake your head. “I can't believe you dare to do such a thing,” you said, “You know she was with me, that I'm in love with her and that her not remembering it changes nothing! I love her!”
Vision didn't respond and you noticed he was looking at a spot behind your back. So to see what he was looking at, you turned. And you faced Wanda.
“W-Wanda…” you stammered.
“Is it true?”
You didn't know what to say, you didn't expect Wanda to hear you. You were paralyzed.
“Wanda,” Vision called, standing up but Wanda immediately motioned for him to shut up.
The witch's gaze remained fixed on you and you swallowed hard.
“[Y/N], is that true?”
“I- Uh… Yeah.”
“You love me?”
You nodded gently, fleeing from the witch's emerald gaze.
“And me? Do I love you?”
Without raising your head to the brunette, you answered. “Yes, you love me.”
You heard Wanda breathe a sigh and you cursed yourself for confessing everything to her.
It was then that Wanda approached you to hug you. You were surprised by her gesture but you let her do it. You had missed her hugs so much.
“Thanks for giving me the time,” Wanda whispered in your ear and you shivered.
You didn't answer and when she broke her embrace, you let her go.
Wanda looked at you with a smile on her face. You were nervous but you smiled back at her. You expected her to leave the room now, but instead she asked you the last question you could expect.
“Can I kiss you?”
You opened your eyes wide and Wanda smiled at you. Finally, you nodded.
So Wanda walked over to you and put her hands on your cheeks. Instinctively, you put yours on her waist. And when your lips were just inches apart, it was you who broke the distance.
You felt Wanda's lips hug yours perfectly and a shiver ran through both of your bodies. It was then that Wanda was overcome by a wave of memories.
Sensing that something was wrong, you stepped back and observed the witch. When she came to her senses, she looked at you with pure love. And you understood.
“Do you remember?” you asked, hopeful.
“I remember,” Wanda confirmed.
Overwhelmed by immense happiness, you kissed Wanda again. She responded to the kiss and it was the best feeling in the world. Your kiss was tender and passionate. You finally found Wanda back. Your Wanda.
“I love you [Y/N],” Wanda whispered against your lips and you smiled. “Sorry it took so long to remember that.”
“I love you too. So much.”
