Coffee and Dates

Summary:

You and Spencer stayed late before the weekend to finish up reports. What starts as a quick break leads to you and Spencer talking the night away. Giving him a ride home, Spencer asks you out on a date before closing the car door.

Notes:

warnings : None (if I missed anything let me know!)

a/n : Day sixteen of Comfortember is here! The prompt was ‘coffee/tea break’. I know it’s later in the day that I’m posting this.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The light of the computer screen was harsh against your eyes. It was late for a Friday in the office, but you wanted to get the reports for the week done before you left. A late night in the office was better than coming into the office on a Monday with paperwork to continue. You rubbed your face harshly, pushing away from your desk with a tired sigh. You only had two more reports to finish.

“Are you okay?” Spencer asked from his desk.

“Just tired,” you groaned, spinning your chair to face the desk next to yours.

Spencer finished writing his own report before setting his pen down on the desk. He turned in his chair to face you, eyes looking over your face. He looked deep in thought, as if he was contemplating his next words.

“Do you want tea?” Spencer’s question confused you.

“Tea?” You repeat, trying to figure out where he was going with this idea.

“Or coffee. It’s late, but we’ve drank coffee later. I just figured we could take a break,” Spencer gestured over his shoulder to the break area in the corner.

You smiled, understanding what he meant now. You nodded, standing up. Spencer was quick to follow you, leading the way toward the bullpen’s break area. He started the coffee pot as you walked to the kettle to flick it on. You grabbed a bag of green tea, dropping it into your mug. Spencer leaned against the counter as the two of you waited.

“How’re your reports going?” You asked through a yawn.

“They’re fine. I only have a few left,” Spencer shrugged. “What about yours?”

You tilted your head back with a groan, “I only have two left. But that’s going to be an hour on each one.”

Spencer chuckled at your reaction, “I know what you mean.”

“Yeah right,” you lightly shoved his shoulder.

“I do!”

“C’mon! Mister IQ of 187, these reports should be a breeze for you!”

You watched as pink appeared high on his cheeks as he looked away. As you opened your mouth to say something, the coffee maker beeped and the kettle clicked off. Spencer quickly turned to face the pot behind him. As he poured in his mountain of sugar, you poured the boiling water over the tea bag.

“I could take one of your reports,” Spencer offered.

“You don’t have to do that,” you reassured him.

“No, it’s fine. I can do both my reports and that one in an hour. That way we can both be out of here before ten.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, it’s no problem,” he shoved his hair out of his eyes.

“Thank you.”

Spencer nodded while walking backwards, guiding the both of you toward your desks. The two of you started working on the reports again, this time idly chatting as you went. You were surprised how much easier it was working on the reports when you were able to focus on something other than the reports. The hour passed with ease, you and Spencer laughing as you worked.

“Can I drive you home? So you don’t have to take the train.” You asked as the doors of the elevator opened.

“I’d appreciate that,” Spencer checked his watch, “the last train leaves in five minutes. Even if I hurry I wouldn’t make it.”

“It’s no problem, Spence. My car’s this way.”

The ride to Spencer’s apartment was filled with even more laughs as the two of you discussed your plans for the weekend. Pulling in front of the apartment complex, you parked so Spencer could get out.

“I was wondering,” Spencer started as he undid his seatbelt, “if maybe you would like to get lunch with me? This weekend, maybe?”

Your cheeks hurt from the smile that reached your lips, “I’d like that a lot.”

“Great! I’ll call you later, so we can figure it out more.”

“I look forward to it.”

Spencer nodded and reached for the door handle. Leaning down before he closed the door behind him, he locked eyes with you. “Thank you for the ride.”

“It’s no problem, good night Spence.”

“Night,” his statement was punctuated by the door closing.
