Work Text:
Countryhumans are anthropomorphic personifications of countries. They only exist as far as they do in the minds of people.
Some people may classify Countryhumans as a 'schizophrenic' effect, because they are considered real only in the minds of those who believe they exist. It has been shown, however, that there are individuals that can see them, despite not knowing about their true nature. Since they cannot appear to everyone, and nobody is willing to reveal that they know Countryhumans are real (most likely out of fear), Countryhumans have no means of communicating with their citizens directly. Therefore, it is impossible to inform the entire population of any sort of danger that might threaten a country.
The history of each nation is entirely written by historians; which is why, even in our days, most of the Countryhumans don't exactly like the way humans tell their history and choose not to learn more about it. They prefer to take refuge in their own memories of what happened throughout centuries. However, they can never be sure that their recollection of the events isn't changed by time or altered in some way by different political viewpoints. That is one of the main reasons why some countries may act hostile towards their citizens – due to incorrectly told stories, not all Countryhumans trust humanity.
Each Countryhuman is the representative for their land. All of them possess some kind of stereotype as a personality trait. They speak many languages but usually use only one. A few of them may live together and interact with each other. They do not age, though they can become sick just like regular people. Their physical condition is also dependent on how well-off their nation is. If a country prospers and thrives, then its Countryhuman will stay healthy. In times of great poverty and disaster, however, this is not the case.
Despite being immortal beings who cannot die naturally, Countryhumans can perish if humans stop believing in their existence. When there are no more people who recognise a particular country, that Countryhuman's physical body turns into dust. This type of death happens extremely rarely because humans still pay attention to certain countries that used to be dominant on the world scene.
At the moment, it appears as though Countryhumans aren't capable of reproducing – which makes them completely separate from animals that need new generations to continue existing. There hasn't been a single recorded case where two Countryhumans ever had children together. For this reason, it is assumed they are unable to have offspring unless there is another form of reproduction currently unknown to science. It also remains unknown whether or not they're able to love each other romantically and engage in sexual activities like humans do.
However, there has been speculation that some relationships between Countryhumans might have involved feelings like parent-child affection, friendship, sibling ties, etc.; and this was especially evident in cases such as the Soviet Union and its states (though there were conflicting reports). But aside from that, they're not actually related by blood relation – they aren't genetically related either because they're not biologically similar at all.
Most people would describe Countryhumans as having characteristics similar to humans', yet also different enough to be recognisable as something non-human (or even alien) by most people. Some features make them appear almost normal, while others show clearly that they're definitely not human. Their faces look like regular people's except for the fact that the colors of their national flag replace normal skin pigmentation. Usually their hair is the same color as the upmost color of their national flag and their body usually the color of the last color of their national flag.
Many say that their eyes resemble those of predators, mostly cats, dogs or wolves. The pupils seem unnaturally round and dilated all the time – but some claim they have slit pupils instead, depending on what animal is said to resemble their appearance. Maybe their eyes are simply based off their national animal. They do not blink. They also don't sleep much. They rarely eat anything but they consume various liquids frequently – including alcohol and caffeinated beverages, even though these substances have no effect on them whatsoever. Most drink coffee often because of how stimulating the aroma can be and how many nations enjoy the smell itself.
Some also think Countryhumans might lack senses like pain receptors. Others say they can't feel temperature changes on their skin. Since there are very few known ways of harming/killing Countryhumans, it is difficult to prove any of these theories right or wrong. However, one thing that does remain consistent about them: whenever they do get injured, they regenerate extremely fast – almost immediately after the injuries have occurred. This ability allows them to survive most attacks inflicted upon them without any permanent damage done.
