Work Text:

Clifford's time in London was something he often found himself trying and failing to forget. After all, he was a man. He wasn't allowed to have such relations with his fellow men, but he broke that rule with Bobby.

Initially, he tried to tell himself it wasn't really an act of homosexuality, since Bobby still had all the 'lady bits' down there, but this lie to himself was hard to maintain because, for the life of him, he just couldn't see Bobby as a girl.

When Bobby kissed him again in Germany, he pulled away, but he couldn't fight off how okay the kiss had felt. He hadn't necessarily felt violated or disgusted, at least not with Bobby. If anything, he was just disgusted with himself for actually enjoying it.

He thought about Bobby quite a lot after he arrived in Paris. Things with Bobby had always felt so freeing, unlike how hard everything with Sally had felt. Could Bobby get pregnant? Maybe, he wasn't sure. But he was sure that Bobby would handle that with a bit more grace than Sally had.

He wanted to write about someone like Bobby. A man who never quite fit in because he wasn't always a man. A man who found himself at the Kit Kat Klub in Berlin because he didn't know where else to go. Where else he may be accepted, at least until the Nazis really took hold.

There was a knock at his motel door.

On instinct, Clifford got up and went to open it, but the person standing there was not housekeeping or the inn's owner asking him for more money just to stay through the night. No, it was the one person he couldn't get out of his head despite his desperate attempts to.

"Bobby?" Clifford said, confused. "What- Why- How are you here?"

"Sally gave me this" Bobby held up a small slip of paper with a hole punched out of it. The Paris ticket. "She said I'd be able to find you here, and that I'd get more use out of the ticket than she would" he explained. "Can I come in?"

"Oh, yeah, of course" Clifford opened the door to let the shorter man in. Bobby dropped his suitcase by the bed and sat down. He was still in his Kit Kat Klub outfit and his case seemed lightly packed. Clifford wondered how much of a rush he'd been in to get there.

Bobby turned his attention to Clifford's typewriter and curiously went over to it. Embarrassment flooded Clifford's mind and part of him wanted to reach out and block Bobby from seeing what he'd been writing, but something kept him from doing so.

'There was a boy in Berlin who never fit in. A boy who wasn't always a boy and who didn't know his place in the world. Maybe that place was the Kit Kat Klub'

"I missed you too" Bobby said with a small chuckle after he read the start. He turned to Clifford and smiled. Before Clifford could react, Bobby was face to face with him again and their lips connected. Only, this time, Clifford didn't pull away, despite the fact that he knew this was wrong. "You want help?"

"Huh?" Clifford asked, still dazed by the sudden kiss. Bobby giggled and gestured to the typewriter.

"You're writing about a transvestite" Bobby replied. "To my knowledge, you're not a transvestite. So, do you want help?"

"Oh, you don't have to do that" Clifford chuckled awkwardly. He didn't want Bobby to have to divulge any feelings or information he didn't want to. Besides, maybe it was foolish to include such a controversial character in his novel.

"I'm offering, Cliff"

"Okay" Clifford swallowed thickly, sitting in front of his typewriter.

Bobby smiled and leaned back on the bed, beginning to explain how he felt and why he switched over from being a girl to a boy despite the fact that it wasn't socially acceptable. He explained why he ended up working at the Kit Kat Klub and how the people there all accepted him despite the fact that he was a transvestite.

Before he even realized it, Clifford had filled a whole page. Holy shit, he thought. This is the most productive I've been in years.

"Impressed?" Bobby asked with an amused smile as he saw Clifford's proud expression and the filled page. Clifford got out of his seat and practically jumped on the bed, onto Bobby.

This time, it was Clifford who initiated the kiss.
