Ice Cream n’ Walkin’

Summary:

Bubblewrap told Ukulele she'd meet her on a particular day to try a new ice cream place that opened up nearby, but...she can't help but worry about it!

Luckily, she just so happens to be with the girl that knows exactly what to do in such situations!

Can be read as object or human! Sorry about the silly title, my brain blanked on that

Notes:

Requested by LonelyNikki!

I apologize if this looks rushed, I wasn't quite sure how the plot would go for a while 😭

I’ve also been swamped with other work lately, so maybe if I ever get the time to I might have another go at this, idk 🤷♂️

Work Text:

'I hope I'm not late...'

Bubblewrap did her best to keep a straight face as she ran down the sidewalk, careful not to trip and fall over anything.

'Ohhh, I should've planned better! I told myself I'd leave earlier than this, but...ohhh...!'

She quickly glanced left and right as she reached an intersection with stop signs, spotting no vehicles in sight before making her way over to the other side of the path. Looking up, she spotted a familiar sign above her head and read what it said quietly to herself. Yup, this was the corner her and Ukulele had agreed to meet on alright. Now all she had to do was wait of course, but...that was easier said than done.

'Where is she?' Bubblewrap thought. 'Am I too early? Did I get here at the right time? Don't tell me I'm somehow at the wrong place! Or worse...maybe Ukulele got so bored of waiting she called the whole thing off and left!'

Bubblewrap was almost so lost in her mind that she didn't hear someone approaching her until they spoke up.

"Hey Bubblewrap! There you are!"

"Eek!"

Bubblewrap turned around to find herself face to face with Ukulele smiling and waving at her. Bubblewrap felt a weight get lifted off her chest as she calmed down, realizing at least some of her fears had now been dealt with.

"H-hey Ukulele," Bubblewrap replied, trying to compose herself. "Hope I'm not too late."

"Of course not!" Ukulele said happily. "Even if you were, you know I'd understand and wait here for you!"

"Oh, you would?" Bubblewrap replied. "That's a relief..."

"Anyway, are you ready to check out that ice cream place now?" Ukulele asked.

"Yeah!" Bubblewrap exclaimed cheerfully. "Let's go!"

With her initial meetup concerns washed away, Bubblewrap began walking at a quickened pace, a smile on her face. Ukulele walked right beside her, and Bubblewrap could have sworn she felt her hand brush up against her own. She said nothing though, continuing to happily make her way down the sidewalk as she had been. The ice cream place was just down a block or two, it really wasn't much walking. Yet, as the two drew closer and closer, Bubblewrap started thinking to herself again.

'Well, at least they shouldn't be closed, right? Ukulele looked at the store hours before we said we'd do this,' she thought. 'But...what if they don't have anything I like? What if I try something and don't like it, or make a mess and cause Ukulele to apologize for everything out of pity?!'

Bubblewrap's pace started to slow down as the thoughts gathered and gathered. Ukulele nearly walked right by her, but out of the corner of her eye, Bubblewrap noticed her slow down and turn around.

"We're here!"

Ukulele's bright and cheerful voice snapped Bubblewrap out of her trance once again, prompting her to look up at the building in front of her. It was brightly colored, decorated with cute faces and cartoons on the outside. From what the two could see through the window, it didn't look very crowded at the moment.

"Ladies first!" Ukulele chuckled as she walked over and held the door open.

"Oh no, you should go in first!" Bubblewrap replied. "You suggested this, after all!"

"But I insist!" Ukulele said, lightheartedly. "You're the guest, are you not?"

"Well, alright," Bubblewrap sighed with a smile. "If you say so..."

Bubblewrap still held the door open for Ukulele as she followed from behind, though it didn't take the two long to enter and examine the ice cream shop in all its glory. The inside of the room was a nice, light pink color, decorated with posters advertising new products and fresh ingredients. Off to one side was a large, very visible display case containing all the ice cream flavors and the cashier area, and just above that were two large boards listing the whole menu. Bubblewrap looked up at it, eyes darting around it for familiar flavors. She soon relaxed as her eyes located the usual chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, as well as others like mint chocolate chip and cookie dough. There were even familiar toppings, cones, cups, everything else a normal ice cream parlor would have.

Man, she needed to stop over-complicating the situation.

"What do you think you're gonna get?" Ukulele asked, also looking up at the board. "I think I might try that new tropical flavor they have listed up there!"

'Oh no, does she want me to try a new flavor too?' Bubblewrap thought, her face slightly scrunching up in concern. 'I wouldn't want to hurt her feel-'

"But don't let me pressure you into getting anything you don't want!" Ukulele chuckled. "We can always come back and try the other flavors whenever you’d like! Or, if you don't like this place, we can find another place to try! I don't mind, really!"

Bubblewrap felt herself ease up a little at that, nodding with a weak smile on her face.

"Aww, thanks Ukulele!" she replied.

"Of course!"

"Alright, I think I know what I'm going to order!" Bubblewrap said.

"Sweet!" Ukulele replied. "Shall we go order, then?"

"Yeah!"

So the two waited for the counter to be open before going up and ordering. The cashier was very friendly, and in no time at all, the two had their ice creams. Both were coincidentally in cones, and portioned just right: not too much ice cream, and not too little.

"Oh! You know what? We could eat and walk in the park nearby if you wanted!" Ukulele offered, her face brightening up.

"That sounds great, sure!" Bubblewrap replied.

The two girls left the ice cream place as Bubblewrap tasted her ice cream, surprised to find that it tasted quite good. Ukulele seemed to be enjoying hers too, which Bubblewrap found to be relieving. Everything had calmed down, and Bubblewrap could feel herself finally easing up for once after so long. The two soon reached the park entrance and started walking on the paved trail, pointing out things like the setting sun as they went.

There were barely any people out at the moment, which only made the walk better. The distant sound of cars in the background was drowned out by the two's light footsteps, accompanied by the occasional statement or laugh. Bubblewrap made sure not to let her ice cream melt as she stuck to Ukulele's side, though she felt a part of her mind begin to wander again.

'I know everything's been fine, but...now what?' Bubblewrap thought. 'What if this is where it all collapses, after everything we've done? What if I trip and my ice cream falls on her ground? Or worse, what if if gets onto Ukulele? What if she thinks I'm boring and that everything I do is-'

"Bubblewrap?"

"Ack!" Bubblewrap exclaimed. "Um...yeah?"

"You seem a little zoned out. Are you alright?"

Ukulele had stopped walking, prompting Bubblewrap to stop as well.

"Yeah, I'm fine!" Bubblewrap chuckled nervously. "It's nothing, I swear!"

"Are you sure?" Ukulele asked, her tone concerned but kind. "You know, if there's anything wrong, you can always tell me."

"I-I just don't want to bring down the mood is all!" Bubblewrap explained. "You look like you're having so much fun with this, and...the last thing I want to do is ruin that!"

"Yeah, well...I'm enjoying this because you're here!" Ukulele replied. "It would make me feel even better knowing that you're also enjoying this stress free, y'know?"

"I...oh..." Bubblewrap uttered. "Well...um..."

She paused, unsure if she was fully prepared to explain what she'd been thinking about.

"Take your time," Ukulele reassured her, a warm smile across her face. "We have all the time in the world."

Bubblewrap nodded, taking a little while longer to collect her thoughts before speaking.

"This entire time, I guess...I guess I've just been worrying about everything that could go wrong," she sighed. "But then once we get to it, it turns out to be okay, and...I don't know why I got so stressed to begin with!"

"I see," Ukulele said quietly, nodding along.

"Even though I know things will be fine, I just...I just can't help it," Bubblewrap continued. "I wish I could be more relaxed, I really do! But...I don't know..."

"It's okay, I get it," Ukulele replied. "To be honest, I was a little stressed myself the entire time!"

"Really?" Bubblewrap asked, her eyes widening a little.

"Yeah! But I knew you'd understand, because you're a kind and caring person!" Ukulele responded, gently holding onto Bubblewrap's one open hand with her own. "So I'll do the same for you, of course! I'll be there to reassure you that everything will be all right no matter what!"

Bubblewrap was honestly speechless, though she supposed she shouldn't expect any less from Ukulele. Her once concerned face shifted to one of genuine delight, and soon enough she found herself speaking again.

"Maybe an ice cream day was the right idea," Bubblewrap said. "It's sweet, just like you!"

"Aww~!"

For the rest of that day, Bubblewrap didn't think a single overcomplicated thought again. She had fun walking around and eating ice cream until it got dark, and even as her and Ukulele parted ways, she didn't know what she'd been so worried about.

Boy, was she thankful for having a girl like Ukulele around.

Notes:

I left the ice cream flavors vague so y'all could imagine for yourselves what their ice cream flavor choices would be!

Fun Fact: I was originally hesitant to type an Ukuwrap fic since a bunch of other people were already doing it when I joined!! But of course, now I see that just because it's already been done, doesn't mean you can't add more to the pile!
