You Have a Voice of an an Angel

Summary:

Tim stumbles upon Lucy’s American Idol audition.

Work Text:

Tim came home from a long shift. He is now Watch Commander since Lucy made Detective. He wanted more stable hours, except today. All hell broke loose. Lucy had left hours ago and she was asleep when he got home.

He walks into their bedroom and gives his wife a kiss on her forehead. She moves slightly, but stays asleep. Tim is too wired to fall asleep. He heads to the living room and puts on the TV. Lucy left him a plate of food and he warms it up. He brings it to the couch and starts eating.

The TV is low, but he can still hear it. All of a sudden he hears a beautiful voice and his eyes look up. A rerun of American Idol is on and he sees Lucy. She’s in her uniform and she’s singing.

Why did she never tell me she could sing?! Tim wonders. How have I never seen this or heard her before? He can’t stop staring at the TV. He’s so enraptured that he doesn’t hear his wife walk in. Her mouth drops and she gasps. Tim whips his head around.

Tim stands up. “Hi baby.” He pulls her in for a hug. “Why did you never tell me about this?” He wonders curiously as his eyes land back on the TV.

She looks at him with this incredible brown eyes. “I’m sorry.” She says quietly. “After the barrel I didn’t sing much. I sang my favorite song that day and it was hard to sing again.” He wipes a tear from her face.

“I’m so sorry Lucy. I didn’t mean to upset you.” He walks them over to the couch and pulls her into his lap. “Your voice is absolutely incredible. I can’t believe I didn’t know you auditioned and got a golden ticket. You could have been rich and famous, yet you stuck with me.” She chuckles.

“It was a dark time and I haven’t sang much since. When Jackson died, I couldn’t do it. We did karaoke which I kept between us and it hurt so much. Singing brought me so much joy and then it was connected to terrible events. Jackson asked me to sing for Angela’s wedding and I was going to. Once everything happened, I couldn’t do it. I wanted to sing again one day and it never happened. Then when I did trial prep and Chris started humming it-”

Tim cuts her off sharply. “He did what?”

She puts her hand on his heart and rests her head on his shoulder. “It was a long time ago. It was pretty shitty. My point is I have many reasons to start singing again. I miss it and now that you know, I have a feeling I can’t keep it put away.”

She leans down and kisses him. He places one hand on her belly and the other on the side of her head.

“Would you have told me if I didn’t see this?” He asks curious.

“I don’t know, probably. I have always dreamed of singing to my children and since that’s happening sooner rather than later, I want to start again. She’ll be here in four months. I want to start while she’s still in my belly.”

Tim kisses her again. “I can’t wait for your to sing to our baby girl.” He pulls her closer and rewinds the TV to listen once again. Once it’s over he’s in awe of his wife. She’s been through so much and she’s truly the strongest person I know. How did I get so lucky?

He’s startled out of his thoughts by Lucy tapping his arm. “Sorry I was just thinking. About how lucky we are to have you.” Tim places his hand once again on Lucy’s belly. He can’t wait to finally feel her kick.

He moves Lucy onto the couch and kneels on the floor. He starts singing to her belly, but it’s meant for both of them. His girls.

You are my sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are gray
You'll never know, dear
How much I love you
Please don't take
My sunshine away
The other night, dear
As I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you
In my arms
When I awoke, dear
I was mistaken
So I hung my head and I cried
You are my sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are gray
You'll never know, dear
How much I love you
Please don't take
My sunshine away”

He looks at Lucy who has tears in her eyes again. He swipes them away and moves to kiss her. She stands up and start swaying.

“That was beautiful. Thank you Tim. She’s so lucky to have you as a daddy.”

“I’m not nearly as good as you, but we can sing it her together if you’d like. It can be our thing. I’ll do anything to hear your beautiful voice sing.”

Lucy starts singing quietly and Tim realizes it’s their wedding song. He lets her take control. They stand there dancing while Lucy sings quietly.

Once she’s finished she looks up at Tim. “Thank you. For always supporting me and knowing the right things to do or say. You’re amazing and I am so lucky.”

He puts his head on hers and rocks them. “I’m the lucky one. Come on let’s get some sleep.” He cleans his mess as Lucy shuts off the TV. They sing together to her belly until their daughter is born. Amaya Grace Bradford came into this world screaming on a rainy spring day and both parents teared up at this beautiful little girl.

They sing to her, together or separately depending on work, every night. Lucy is grateful for Tim. He has helped her get her voice back and singing has become special to both of them. Tim loves watching her American Idol audition. He has a copy on his phone and shows it to almost everyone.

Tim is proud of Lucy and everything she’s overcome. He’s truly the luckiest man in the world.
