Chapter Text
The guardians folded his paws as he watched the sweet moment between the former king Andrias, Queen Marcy, and her family. A grin touched his whiskers. Then a sigh. He had been spending too much time with Anne as he had gotten so comfortable with this feline form.
He was technically retired now with the counsel of Annes looking over his section of the multiverse. But retirement didn’t necessarily mean abandoning all his duties and powers. Now he spent time watching possible timelines. A trick he learned from other multiverse beings. He remembered it took a while for them to teach him because of their displeasure of him creating the calamity gems. Though he swore he caught even more flack from Dreamers, Observers, and other multiversal beings after the gems were destroyed. Apparently many were invested in those time lines.
Still with so many timelines he never grew bored. If ever he came across a particularly interesting or dangerous time line he would notify his replacements.
The sweetness of the moment between the leviathan family had attracted the Guardian to observe this timeline, but the curiosity of humans being born in amphibia piqued his interest, so the cat god decided to follow the timeline to see where it went. Naturally the future had a infinite number of branches but their were usually main branches that beings like themself could follow
Apparently in this time line species could interbreed thanks to the potions Valeriana had invented. there were rules of course. Such as for it to work both parents had to be the same species at the time. And for the egg to survive the mother had to remain the changed species until the egg was laid.
The guardian sighed seeing the heartbroken mothers that brought this to the attention of those researching the potion.
But if a mother followed those rules their children would be born happy and healthy, perfectly comfortable in their own skin. However without exception the children would eventually transform into their mother’s original species. Usually around the age of six. No one was really sure why but Maddi the leading witch in the field figured it was almost as a way to ensure the child could survive the tadpole stage before taking their true form.
The guardian chuckled. This potion made interspecies families truly possible. Couples that couldn’t have children before could finally have them. However even with this revelation many couples were nervous to have kids because the transformation into the true form was just as painful as their first time a person transformed with the use of a potion. And many parents didn’t want to inflict that amount of pain to their child.
But the guardian was happy for this timeline. Because it made it possible for his champions to truly live and have families of their own. He had seen other timelines where Anne, Sasha and Marcy were trapped in amphibia with no other humans. While they loved the inhabitants without other humans the species would go extinct on amphibia and that knowledge often led the girls in those timelines to depression.
But in this timeline they could have families. The guardian took the time to see what happened to the first three human’s in amphibia’s family.
Marcy was the first to have kids. She had a few others after Caleb and Cassie. While Caleb eventually took the throne by that time amphibia had become more of a parliamentary system so the title wasn’t as important. His siblings became scholars and adventurers.
Anne settled down with a nice frog and had half a dozen kids. The eldest two she named after her birth parents. Oum and Bee. They grew up to be farmers and restaurant owners.
As for Sasha she surprised everyone by having the most kids. All from different fathers. Four from toads, two from frogs, Two from newts, an axolotl, and even a child from an olm. Of course Percy and Broddock loved being grandparents and showered all their grandchildren with love. Whenever Sasha was asked about the fathers she would always just respond they were comrades in arms.
The guardian smiled as he watched the misadventures of the young humans. Especially the one when Sasha’s olm child transformed into a human for the first time and was able to see with their eyes for the first time. Some of the children married each other as they grew older, others would marry amphibians and take potions so they could have their own children.
Humans were officially on their way to becoming a new major race in amphibia. But the guardian sighed. If the attempted kidnapping of the first human born in amphibia proved anything it was that mortals had equal gifts of destruction and creation.
In the early years some amphibians would be terrified about humans spreading like unchecked beasts. Thankfully they were a minority. Later when humans began to breed among themselves tensions rose with human supremacists trying to subjugate the other inhabitants of amphibia. Thankfully they were squashed by an alliance of amphibians and humans.
Eventually humanity became just another race in amphibia with their own pros and cons just like the frogs, toads, newts, and olms.
As time passed the great human strength led to a new golden age in amphibia as new continents were found and explored. New arts and technologies were developed. Human strength helping build farms, cities, and the hunting of dangerous predators.
A new technological age would also develop from this. Jump Started by Polly Planter’s industrial revolution by her tinkering with frobot and other broken machines, as well as generations of humans hearing about their homeworld from stories Anne told. It became a shared dream for humans to return to earth. They knew it would not be possible for many lifetimes but the desire to see their homeworld and compare the changes that happened between the two became a uniting point among all of amphibia. And little did they know there were also humans on the other side also trying to breach that gap. Many generations would research the problem bringing greater and better advancements in travel, medicine, farming, industry, and much more.
The guardian stopped watching then. The further one looked into the future the more it could branch. Heavens there were some timelines where they achieved their goal in returning to earth in less than a single generation. And others where they never find a way back. And either way the guardian wanted it to be a surprise for when it actually happened.
The guardian chuckled, though few mortals could ever hope to replace him. Mortals in general were simply fun to watch. He felt a tug. He was being summoned by the counsel of Annes. And judging by the whispering he could hear from the dreamers and observes a new Anne must be nearing the ending point of her adventure. Though retired, the Guardian never got bored talking to different versions of Anne and giving them the offer to join in being a guardian. The observers and dreamers enjoyed it too. The Guardian took the form of this new Anne’s pet, a dog this time that was a surprise. But it also excited him because who knew what new possibilities this new Anne would bring.
