Work Text:
If you asked John, he wouldn't have been able to give you an exact date he moved in with Rodney. He would have told you it was more of a gradual move- a spare go bag left in his room because after one too many disasters after they fell asleep during a movie, John was sick of having to run back to his quarters for his uniform.
A spare go bag eventually upgraded to him having a spare drawer in Rodney's dresser, and John's copy of War and Peace took up a permanent place on Rodney's nightstand, right beside his tablet. Soon, with all the time he was spending there, it just made sense to fully move all of his belongings into Rodney's quarters.
Rodney never questioned it, not even when John started sleeping in his bed.
They're in the mess hall one morning, laughing together with the team over breakfast, when one of the new scientists does ask.
"So how long have you two been together?" She asked, a sweet, curious smile on her face.
"Two years," John said fondly, at the same time Rodney answered, "We aren't together."
John felt his stomach drop as he turned to Rodney, who had a look of horror on his face that John was sure was a reflection of his own.
"What do you mean we aren't together?" John asked, trying desperately to not sound as devastated as he actually was. Had he been deluding himself this entire time?
"What the hell do you mean, two years?!?" Rodney shot back, his voice high and panicky.
"Have you and John not been living together in the same quarters for the past two years?" Teyla asked softly, giving Rodney an inquisitive look. John's stomach tightened.
"Well of course we have, but that doesn't mean- I mean, I didn't want to assume that- you never said anything!" Rodney shouted, throwing his hands in the air in frustration. John put a hesitant hand on Rodney's shoulder, who turned to look at him with wide eyes, looking much too embarrassed
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have assumed anything. Rodney, do you want to live together? As partners?" John asked, trying to ignore the way his heart was hammering against his chest. Rodney's embarrassment quickly gave way as a blush rose across his entire body. John had to bite back a grin.
"Oh, uhh, well, I'm certainly not about to say no , I mean you're so-" Rodney gestured vaguely to John's entire appearance, "so, so you . So, uhh, yes?"
John let himself grin widely this time, leaning forward slowly to kiss Rodney, who all but melted into the kiss.
They both pointedly ignored the cheers of congratulations throughout the mess hall.
