@Jett Today at 2:41 AM
oh fr?
alr i’m on my way
The window was ajar, letting in the brisk air of the night that made the room feel right. The crickets and the frogs sang their songs gracefully, being the perfect white noise for Killjoy and Cypher to work in peace.
There was a faint jingle that came from a small cardboard box filled with soft blankets, the five kittens Cypher found playing with a small toy they were left with. Killjoy sat beside it, watching the kittens with childlike joy. “You know, we should really get them a bigger area to rest in.”
“That is the plan.” Cypher chips in, rummaging through their storage to grab a few cans of wet cat food. “Omen has a small rabbit pin he’ll lend us, back when he had his two little felines.” He gestured with the food in his hand toward the corner they’d shove any incomplete or failed projects in.
Eventually, Jett had found her way into the room, waving awkwardly. “ Hey , soo… where are they?”
“In the box next to Killjoy, still wide awake.” An audible sigh escaped Cypher as he worked to open the cans, “They seem to be around five weeks old, and very, very loud when they’re hungry. I assume the owner didn’t want them anymore and put them inside a small alleyway.”
“I wish Brimstone would let us keep them,” Killjoy carefully scooped one of the kittens out of the box, dissatisfaction plaguing her voice. “It took a lot of bribery, but eventually he got sick of me begging, so he settled for two weeks. Then we leave them at an animal shelter.”
“Wow, that sucks.” Jett huffed.
The sounds of the kittens got louder as Cypher rationed out the food in small styrofoam bowls. The kitten in Killjoys hands squirmed around impatiently, making her stifle a laugh.
“A bunch of cats running around doesn’t seem too bad, they can be like…” Jett tapped the sole of her foot on the ground, “Like our little rat detectors.”
“We don’t have rats.” Cypher added.
“Yeah but think about it, what if we collected rats from the streets and let them run loose in the headquarters, then boom! We have a reason to keep them.”
The Moroccan raised an eyebrow, “Really now?”
“I mean… it could work.” Jett shot Cypher a nervous smile.
Killjoy picked up each kitten one by one, watching them run to the food bowls. “I think it’s better if we drop them off by the shelter. A lot of us already have enough stress on our shoulders with the entire ‘world saving’ thing,” she sighed. “A cat on the other hand, not much attention needs to be given.”
“Brimstone was already on Omen about his two cats, he was disappointed, ah… thoroughly disappointed, but let it slide. While I can apply all the discounts in the world on our weekly groceries, it is still quite a lot of money.” Cypher snickered, “You should have heard the conversation he was having with Sage after Brimstone lectured him.”
“Can’t we just get Chamber to buy it all, isn’t he like disgustingly rich or something. He could take care of all the cat food ‘n stuff.”
“I will not take charity from that man.”
Jett sucked in a breath. “Alright.” Chamber wasn’t a sensitive topic, but it was clear from day one Cypher never appreciated his presence.
“I understand you want to keep them, but it is better to let them roam around freely without them being holed up in a room all the time, with Skye and Fade’s pets I’d have no idea how they’d react as well. The headquarters is massive, it’ll be easy for them to get lost. It is just not a good idea.”
Cypher carefully picked up the now empty bowls, stacking them on top of each other before chucking them in the trash. “For now, though, could you help me and Killjoy clear out our junk corner? We need a good place for them to rest for the remaining two weeks.”
Jett was happy to oblige.
