Work Text:
Mike pulled into Sparkys diner, putting the car into park. Unbuckling, he looked in the back of the car and saw Abby asleep. He let out a soft sigh and leaned back in his seat, cringing in pain. The hospital patched him up but he didn't want the pain killers, he just wanted to get out of there. His clothes still had blood and holes in it but he was hungry and didn't feel like stopping at his house first. Plus, he's probably not the weirdest thing they've seen in there.
He tried to wake Abby up but she just grumbled and flipped over. He looked at his watch, 5 am. He knew she hadn't eaten since last morning. Damn, that felt like years ago. "Abs, you need to eat something." His voice was soft but still held some authority in it. He just got a huff in response.
"Fine.. I'll just carry you in then." He swore he saw a faint smile on her face as he opened his door, going to the back door and opening it. He gently maneuvered her into his arms, grunting a bit as it jostled his wounds. He closed the door and his own with his foot.
Mike carried Abby into the diner and didn't pay attention to the eyes on him. He found a booth at the back of the place and gently set his little sister down as she still slept and he sat himself across from her. His eyes started to close before he heard his name. He looked over and saw Ness who's face was concerned. He just gave a half-wave, "Hey."
Ness had just finished getting ready for his shift when Mike had entered. He was about to greet him when he noticed the others bloodied clothes and him holding a sleeping Abby. He watched as the other made his way to the back, limping.
He quickly grabbed a regular menu and kids menu before making his way back toward them. He noticed that the man's eyes started to close, "Mike?" Concern laced his tone and face. The security guard seemed to hear him, turning to face the waiter, "Hey." Giving a sad excuse for a wave. He set down the menus and took in Abby's state, glad that the kid isn't hurt anywhere. He turned and looked at Mike, now taking in his state, "Jesus.. What the hell happened?"
"Pizzeria." Was all the answer he got. The two of them had talked about the others job before but he just didn't realize it would cause the guard to get hurt like this.
"Your job did this?" "Yeah.." Ness let out a breath. "If I may ask, why are you here and not at the hospital or at your house?" He asked, "Not that I don't like you being here, it's just..you look like shit right now."
Mike let out a humorless laugh, "I didn't want to be there longer than I needed too and I'm hungry, and I'm sure Abby is." He picked at his fingers which still had some dried blood on them. Not his, Vanessa's.
"Right.. What would you like to order? The usual?" The waiter asked not needing to pull out his order pad.
"Yes please." He responded back, feeling his eyes get heavier.
Ness gave a sad smile, "Okay. I'll be right back." He turned and made his way back. He knew that Mike is gonna be asleep within minutes so he isn't gonna place the order in yet. He'll let him sleep for awhile. God knows the other needs it.
Mike slowly woke to the sound of talking. He groaned softly as he picked his head up from his arms that rested on the table. He looked in front of him, seeing Ness and Abby talking in hushed voices as they both drew on the kids menu. The sight made his heart flutter. He just stared at the waiter who was currently laughing at something the girl had said. "Mike!" He heard his sister and he quickly shifted his gaze over to her. She wore a knowing smirk, "You're drooling."
He blinked and wiped his mouth before realizing he actually wasn't drooling. He glared at her as she cracked up. He grumbled under his breath but stopped when he heard Ness' laugh. He felt his face heat up a bit before he shook it off, "Hey. Don't you have to work or somethin?"
"Hey, I'm on break right now." The waiter raised his hands in a mock surrender.
Mike raised his brow and looked at his watch, 11 pm. "What the fu- frick?" He caught himself. He looked back to the other, "Why didn't you wake me up?"
"You were exhausted, plus Abby didn't wake up until an hour before you did." He was about to say something before he was cut off, "Yes, I did give Abby food."
Ness smiled at Mike who was staring at him. "I can go put in your order now."
"I, uh, yes please." The security guards stomach rumbled.
He nodded, getting up, "I'll be right back." He made his way over to the kitchen, heart beating fast. He knew he was in deep but..it's just getting deeper.
Mike watched Ness leave until a cough cut him from his thoughts. He looked at his sister who was just smug, "So.. You like him don't you?" He looked at her owlishly, "What?!" He practically almost shouted. He felt eyes turn to him. He lowered his voice, "What do you mean?"
Abby rolled her eyes, "I mean, you like him. It's so obvious. You're drooling, you barley take your eyes off of him and your face turns red as a tomato whenever he smiles at you. Duh." She crossed her arms as she looked at him.
He could feel his face heat up. What? No. He wasn't that obvious.. Was he? Wait, what is he saying? He doesn't like him. "No. I do not." He plays with one of the holes in his sleeve, picking at the dried blood to just focus on something that isn't this conversation. "Yes you do." She answered back easily. "You don't have to be in denial. It's oka-"
"I do not like Ness like that, Abby!" He raised his voice. He watched as her eyes went wide. He felt horrible but then he realized she wasn't looking at him. He followed her line of eyesight and realized that Ness was there, with his food, looking at him.
Ness had felt rejuvenated. One of his co-workers had given him a quick pep talk about what he was feeling, how to act on those feelings and how to tell if someone liked him back. He smiled as he grabbed Mikes food, making his way back to the booth. As he got closer he could hear hushed tones and right as he got there,
"I do not like Ness like that, Abby!" Oh, that hurt. That hurt a lot. He watched as Abby stared wide-eyed at him and saw the other do the same. He looked down at the food, "Uh, here's your order." He gave a forced smile as he set the plate down in front of him. "Ness.." The man's voice was soft.
He just shook his head, "Its okay. My break is over anyway. I'll see you when I see you, yeah?" He turned and walked away toward the bathroom.
Mike could only watch helplessly as the waiter walked away. "Nice going there, Einstein." Abby huffed out. "I didn't...know.." He looked to his food then back to where the other had disappeared. "Should i-"
"Yes. Go. Shoo." She agreed quickly.
"Okay..okay." He started to get up, "Dont eat my food." He warned before he limped after Ness.
Ness closed the bathroom door behind him, locking it before sliding down it. Why would he even get his hopes up? That was idiotic of him. "Stupid..stupid.." He whispered as he curled up into himself, hugging his knees. He had liked the other for months now but.. He shook his head and just squeezed his legs.
He was lost in his own thoughts, tears filling his eyes, when he heard a knock on the bathroom door, "I'll be right out!" He called to whoever was there, quickly wiping away any stray tears.
"Ness.. It's me. Can I..come in?"
It was Mike. He chewed on his bottom lip, thinking.
After a couple minutes he got up and unlocked the door. He stepped away from it as Mike opened and closed the door behind him.
The two of them just stood there awkwardly. "Look i-" Mike started but Ness just shook his head, "No, no. It's fine..I get it. You don't have to force yourself to like me."
It was the others turn to shake his head, "Thats not- no." The man wrung his hands together nervously, "I do...like you. It's just, I'm not used to this feeling."
His eyes widened, "You..like me?" The other nodded. "Like in a crush way..?" He just..had to make sure.
Mike let out a breath, man this was hard but..freeing in a way. "Yes.. In a crush way. I have for..about a month now." He watched as the waiter started to smile, making his heart beat twice as fast.
"I like you in a crush way too.. I have for..months now."
He felt his face heat up. This was happening. What were these last 24 hours? He felt like he was getting whiplash. He let out a soft laugh, "Well that was easier than I expected." Ness let out a laugh as well, "Yeah, it was."
He took a step closer toward the other, "So does this mean we are...dating?" That felt weird on his tongue..a good kind of weird. He watched as the others face brightened, taking his own step towards him, "Yeah, as long as you want to, of course."
"I want to." He nodded.
Ness smiled, "Then..we are dating." He felt like he couldn't contain his happiness. He took another step toward Mike, reaching out a hand but stopping in the middle, waiting for the other. He knew how the other was with physical touch sometimes. His smile grew as he felt his hand slip into his own. He squeezed the others gently, looking into his eyes. He felt himself starting to lean in,
"Can I?" He asked softly.
"Yeah, yes.."
He closed the gap. His lips melding with Mikes easily. It felt amazing. He moved his free hand to cup the others cheek softly. After a moment he pulled back from the kiss, "That was-" He was cut off by Mike grabbing his collar and pulling him into another kiss. He let out a surprised noise but quickly collected himself and kissed back just as vigorously.
He didn't know how long the kiss went on for but he knew that he didn't want it to end. They sadly have to breathe though. He slowly pulled away from Mike's lips, breathing heavily with a love sick smile on his face.
Mike looked at the man in front of him with his own dopey smile. He hadn't smiled like this in..years.
The two just looked at each other until Ness' watch went off. "Ah, my break's over.." The other frowned. He let out a sigh, "Damn...okay."
He heard him laugh softly, "Hey, tomorrow is my day off. Maybe we could...go on a date?"
He blushed, "Oh, uh, yeah. Yeah, I'd like that." He saw as the waiter smiled with a nod, giving him one last kiss before exiting the bathroom. He stood there in shock. Holy shit..he's dating someone. This is actually happening.
He stood there for a minute more before exiting the bathroom himself and making his way back to the booth. Abby just looked at him with a smirk, "So, I take it that it went well?"
"Yeah, yeah it di-" He looked down at his food and realized that some of his bacon was missing, "Hey!"
She laughed as he threw one of the crayons from the kids menu at her.
