Chapter Text
Kyana poked her head into Dani’s repair shop, moving through an opened garage door, seeing Dani busy working away at something; an engine was practically dissected on her desk and she was seemingly angry at its very existence. This probably wasn’t the best time, but Kyana had too many people to meet today and she wanted to get to Dani before her planned meeting with VR-LA and Finbar.
“Dani!” Kyana called, just to avoid startling Dani from up close, before moving over to her friend. “I’m here!”
Dani jumped a bit, looking over at Kyana with one of her usual mildly grumpy expressions. “...yes. Hi. You needed something?”
“It’s nothing big, I think?” Kyana replied.
“...you think?” Dani raised an eyebrow.
“So. I already told you how I proposed to Cressida.” Kyana tried not to glance down at her ring as she said that, realizing it had become a habit in the month since their mutual proposal, one she had already been teased about. “But, Cressida and I were talking about our wedding and realized we’ll need a Maid of Honor. Cressida doesn’t exactly… have a friend who she thinks would be good for it? She has plenty of friends who will be coming, but none that she’d want to give the role, so-” Kyana rambled a bit, over-explaining as she tried to figure out how to segue into what she wanted to say.
“You’re asking me to be the Maid of Honor then?” Dani asked, turning away from the engine in her chair. “...me?”
“You’re my closest friend who could fit the role...?” Kyana replied, shrugging a bit.
“...am I actually your only friend who’s a woman?” Dani sounded like she was teasing.
“No! I said you’re my closest friend who could! I have other friends who could, if you don’t want to...” Kyana said, intentionally trailing off.
“No. I want to.” Dani snapped.
“But you said-”
“I didn’t say anything about not wanting to.”
Kyana giggled. “Thank you, Dani.”
“Let me finish this.” Dani said, turning back towards the engine. “Then you’re telling me what plans you’ve already got set up. That’s the Maid of Honor’s job, right? To help with all the bullshit parts?”

Kyana stepped into Finbar’s diner, much more confident than when she went to see Dani. VR-LA was sitting alone at the counter, typing away at something on his laptop with a mug of tea next to him. Finbar was similarly occupied, delivering food to a couple sitting together at a booth. She quickly strode over to where VR-LA was, plopping herself down without a greeting, which was enough to calmly get him to look over at her.
“...Kyana.” VR-LA said, rather warmly, smiling at her. “You needed something?”
Finbar spotted Kyana as well, stepping behind the counter as Kyana began to speak, only waving to her and stopping to show he was listening.
“Well- for some opening context,“ Kyana began, “I asked Dani to be Maid of Honor at me and Cressida’s wedding earlier. Cressida has friends, but not really any she’s close enough to, at least none she’s close enough to in regards to having them take on a role at her wedding, even if they’ll be there. I wanted to ask one of you to be Best Man there, but I couldn’t pick between you two since you’ve both taken on such big roles in my life- I thought about maybe asking Finbar to walk me down the aisle, since he’s the closest thing I’ve really had to a father figure in my life, even if he’s more like an older brother given our ages. But you’re also like my brother VR-LA, so-”
“Kyana.” Finbar interrupted, reaching over the counter to soothingly pat her on the shoulder. “Slow down. Take a breath. Can you just ask us what you want to ask? You can handle the details of why after that.”
She took a deep breath. “Would you both be fine being the Best Men at my wedding...? I know there’s generally only supposed to be one, but I’d like for it to be both of you. You’re both like my family, same with Dani.”
Finbar chuckled a bit, fondly. “Of course. It’d be an honor.”
“Yes!” VR-LA said, seeming a bit less calm and a lot more excited than Finbar. “Yes, of course! I’d be happy to be!”
“...about the somebody walking you down though.” Finbar began. “You weren’t clear on if you were still thinking about it, or if you were just considering it before.”
“I might just walk down on my own?” Kyana said, shrugging a bit. “I’m not sure honestly.”
“Whatever you pick will be fine.” VR-LA replied, smiling so wide Kyana thought his face might split. “You don’t have to follow some old tradition if you don’t want to, but nobody will be upset at you for what you do or don’t choose to do.”

Kyana looked at herself in the mirror, fidgeting with the hair clip she was supposed to put into her ponytail, just spinning it in her hand, feeling the purple fabric flower brush against her thumb with each spin. She was barely containing all of her energy, feeling almost like she was buzzing. She was finally going to marry Cressida, she was going to get to see Cressida’s dress, she was going to get to celebrate with her friends.
There was loud knocking on the door of the room she was changing in, followed by Dani’s even louder and abrupt voice. “Kyana, finish with your hair already, VR-LA is having anxiety about timing for the stupid photos and I need somebody to tell him to shut up because he isn’t listening when I tell him to. The sun is fine, it moves slowly!”
“Five seconds!” Kyana called back, quickly putting the hair clip into place and checking over her dress one last time in the mirror. It had to be exactly right. Kyana didn’t normally care that much about perfection, but she still wanted something nice for this. White fabric covered in little subtle fabric flowers going up the skirt, white flats because nobody helping her pick trusted her with heels for a whole night, a slit up the side of the dress going just slightly above her knee. Sleeveless, for the obvious reason of disliking sleeves. Everything still looked like how it was supposed to, she hadn’t managed to ruin it in her five minutes left alone. Which, she didn’t think she would, but she still had to be careful.
-
The aisle was covered in flower petals, messily scattered around the edges in piles, clearly caused by the fact a very precious dog, Lula, was the one carrying the basket, just accidentally dumping out the flowers as she ran. The purples and yellows of the petals stood out against the white of the carpet rolled out and the green of the grass at the edge.
At the end of the aisle, standing under an arch, was Cressida, wearing a black wedding dress, which was otherwise near-identical in style to Kyana’s own. Her white hair was pulled into her classic braid, the same purple flower at the end where it was tied in the same way as in Kyana’s hair too. They matched in so many ways.
Dani, VR-LA, and Finbar were all standing by the side where Kyana would be standing, there to support her. Elyse and MR-SN sat towards the front on that side, Dani’s brothers also sitting up front, seemingly matching Dani with the reds of their outfits. It was kind of cute, seeing the trio all matching. Kyana wonders if they planned that.
On Cressida’s side, there were slightly less people, but there were still plenty. Davion was there, looking as vibrant as ever. Ione, somebody who Kyana knew from her own childhood and who had apparently met Cressida of her own accord at some point. A vibrant and quite buff man, with ridiculous amounts of facial hair, was sitting by Davion with a hand on his shoulder, apparently named Athos. There were many others though, Cressida certainly wasn’t alone by any means.
Cressida was gorgeous. Kyana could feel her face heating up at the sight of her partner as she walked down the aisle. She’d be married to Cressida, she’d be married to her partner. Kyana knew this wouldn’t truly change much, but it still felt so amazing.
Kyana barely even realized as she took the last step to be next to Cressida, jolting just a bit as she realized she was about to keep walking anyway, quickly turning to face her soon-to-be wife. Cressida was smiling at her, visibly trying not to start chuckling at this. Kyana had to hold back her own chuckles too, trying and failing to pay attention as the person officiating their wedding began speaking. Kyana had to be looking at Cressida, she wanted to be, but looking at Cressida’s face as she tried not to start laughing was making it harder for Kyana not to start laughing too.
They said their “I do’s,” both seeming to be hoping nobody could see what they were both trying to conceal, Cressida taking Kyana’s hands into her own.
“...you may now kiss the bride.” The officiator said.
Cressida put a hand against Kyana’s cheek, and Kyana leaned forward, squeezing the hand that was still in her own. Kyana kissed her wife, no longer feeling any need to laugh, a few happy tears pricking at the corners of her eyes.
