Work Text:
Jowd strolled into the police station. The place was already lively, with people bustling around. He made his way over to his desk, nodding to Cabanela who was sitting at the desk opposite. "Morning, Cabanela."
"Good mooornin', baby. Oh?" Cabanela hadn't failed to notice the little kitten whose head was peeking out from the pocket of Jowd's coat. "I see you bought the cat, body an' all, today. Somethin' up?"
"Not especially, he just fancied coming in like this. Anyway, I see the place is quite busy today." His gaze swept over the room. "Hmm. It doesn't look like Lynne is in, I suppose?" After all, it shouldn't have been too hard to spot that bright red hair in the crowd.
"Actually, I think she might be off in that new hiiidey hole she made for herself. Saw her headin' off with a donut in hand not too long ago. She hasn't got any big cases on at the moment so she's free to take it easy."
"Ahh." Jowd nodded. "I see. She really isn't one to be tethered to a desk, is she?"
"So Lynne's free to take it easy, is she?" (Though I wonder, did she even have to come into work at all?)
"This is Lynne we're talking about. You know she's been coming here since well before she was even a police officer."
"Right. She was always coming in here to learn from you and the inspector, wasn't she?" (Still, is there really nothing else Lynne would rather be doing?)
"Well, I wonder. Why don't you try and find that hiding place of hers, Sissel? It might be a fun challenge for you. Who knows, Lynne might enjoy the company."
"I take it I'm not getting any clues? Alright, it shouldn't be a problem with my ghost tricks anyway."
Sissel hopped out of his pocket and wandered around the building, frequently popping into the ghost world. Soon enough, he caught sight of a human shape sandwiched between two bookshelves in the furthest corner of the room.
"Heh. She's pretty well hidden, but of course there's no hiding from me when I've got the powers of the dead." Sissel approached the bookshelves and found Lynne, hunched over a notepad while munching on the last bit of her donut. He softly mewed.
"Hm?" Lynne jerked her head up, wiping crumbs from her mouth. "Sissel? How did you find me? Did you follow my scent or something? Here." She beckoned and he walked up to her, allowing her to scratch his chin. Sissel began purring in response.
"There's a good kitty." Lynne started scratching his head. Sissel purred even louder, butting his head against her hand. "Aww. You're so cute." She chuckled softly. "Well, I was thinking about going back to my desk once I finished my donut, but you know what, I can stay here a few minutes longer. They won't mind."
"Hmm, they really won't?" Sissel couldn't help but feel some doubt. (I feel like arranging the furniture to create your own hiding place must violate some kind of workplace rule. Oh well, I can't say I mind indulging her.)
Pocketing her notebook, Lynne picked Sissel up and plopped him into her lap, resting back against the wall as she started stroking him, running her hand over his fur while he curled up and purred away.
"Come to think of it, Lynne did tell me once she liked small, crumpled places," Sissel mused. "What was it she said back then, that we should get together and talk about it sometime? Well, here we are, sharing the moment together." He rolled onto his back, allowing her to stroke his belly, and looked up at Lynne, who wore a look of contentment on her face as she indulged himself in petting him. "Gotta say, this really is kind of nice."
