Chapter Text

The five people were all standing in the gate of the candy kingdom, outside of the tank and looking among the city. It was completely trashed and ruined, but for once, there was light around. Flowers perked up from the sun, and it was a sight that made Bonnie’s eyes shine brightly, amazed.

“Thank you travelers for all your help. I don’t know if we would have done that without you.” Bonnie turned around, looking back at Fionna, Simon, And Cake.

“You helped a lot in the plan making too Bonnie, we all did it together.” Simon stepped forward, taking a moment to stand right next to her and look at the scenery himself.

“I’m sorry we didn’t save Martin Mertens.” Fionna also stepped forward, standing on the other side of Bonnie.

“It’s okay, I know you all did what you could.”

“We should have a funeral for him,” Cake suggested, stretching in front of all of them, “even though we don’t have a body.”

“You know. . that would be nice.” Huntress spoke up for the first time that day, Bonnie looked back at her and sighed, giving a little nod.

About an hour later they all were at the Candy Kingdoms graveyard, “

‘for the brave that have fallen.’

The five of them all sat around a tombstone, Cake going to work on the tombstone. Her hands were drills, spinning away delicately and ever so softly to carve words into the granite. When she was finished she stepped back a big dramatic leap.

“All done,” she patted her hands together before letting the silence dwell upon all of them, staring at the rugged hand writing on the tombstone. Cake didn’t know how to spell so Fionna had to help her, causing the words to be all wobbly. It still was the best they could do for now.

Bonnie kneeled right before the tombstone, placing a hand against the ground.

“Martin Mertens will never be forgotten. He wasn’t always so generous, but he softened down to us. He became almost completely unselfish.”

“Oh yeah, before you found us two he barely would listen when I talked to him, and soon. . be became the only person I really talked to about. . personal things.” Huntress looked down, taking a deep breath in, “at least he will now be at peace.” Bonnie looked over at Huntress with a saddening look in her face. She never really saw this much emotion from the younger girl.

“Martin had a lot of good qualities, like his soup. That was some really good soup.” The blonde rubbed her stomach just thinking about its deliciousness. It was odd not waking up to the warm smell of his food.

“The best soup,” Cake added. It made the group laugh a bit despite the darkness around the situation.

“Will he forever rest in peace.” Simon gave a final comment before the group fell into a really deep silence. They all remembered their moments with him, mostly Bonnie and Huntress. It took them a good while to even speak up about them being there for a while, it felt like hours, but realistically it was about 30 minutes. Once they all had felt as if they could leave, the group started to head their way back towards the tank, yet not quite getting in. It felt nice not always having to hide in the tank for once.

“Cake, Simon, I think we should go somewhere else to do everything. I don’t want to mess anything up after they finally are able to calm down.” The human suggested to both her best friend, and a newer friend she's begun to make.

“I agree, there also might not be many sources of energy for us to use here. . there’s not many people here even left to use energy from.” Simon looked over at Bonnie and Huntress who scratched their heads a bit at their conversation.

“We should get going now, we still have a mission we need to finish. It was nice meeting you Princess– I mean, Bonnie.” Simon fumbled on his words, but Bonnie shrugged, then smiled.

“Nah, you can call me princess. I think I’m going to try to rebuild the candy kingdom myself. I made it all myself anyway,” she gave herself some credit and held her hand out.

“We should try to come back here sometime if that’s ever possible.” Fionna suggested to her friends right before also shaking Bonnie's hand. Cake got another shake even though technically they had shaken hands when just meeting.

“Be safe on your travels, we still don’t know if any vampires lurk out there.”

“We appreciate your help in the fight.” Huntress bowed to them. Simon was the only one who bowed back, simply feeling like it was the respectful thing to do.

“Thank you, but we shouldn’t have to worry about any vampires.” Simon pulled out the remote, and held onto the three of them tightly.

“Till we meet again!” Simon waved off, and in a flash the three of them seemed to fade away. Bonnie looked really puzzled and Huntress as well, the two of them not understanding what they were seeing.

“Well, I guess they really meant they were from another universe.” Huntress shrugged, Bonnie looked over and thought about that for a second. She wondered, were those things she said about her and Marceline really true? She shook her head around.

Huntress and Bonnie talked for a minute outside of the tank before going on a walk.

“I haven’t been able to just walk around the streets in years now.” Bonnie stated. Even though they knew for the most part it would be safe outside, they still brought their weapons along just in case of emergency. Technically they had no clue if it was actually really safe, so this could almost be a test. In the process of walking Bonnie started to talk about her plan.

“I really do want to build the Candy Kingdom up again. Huntress, would you be on my side along the way?” Huntress glanced up and thought of it for a minute before shrugging.

“I’ll help, but I don’t want it to become a responsibility to take care of the kingdom. I’m just not cut out for it.” She debated, which Bonnie nodded, she of all people would understand that being a princess comes with many responsibilities.

“That’s more than okay, I just think we should still talk after everything gets settled. As corny as it sounds, you and Martin were the only friends I had for years, at least in my eyes. It would be nice to be able to connect over this in the future.”

“Yeah . .” Huntress went quiet for a moment before looking up at Bonnie, “That sounds pretty nice.”

“But what will you do about actual citizens in your kingdom?”
