Life Lessons from Chess

Summary:

Sam and Jack have a heart-to-heart while playing chess.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

“Moving your rook like this”—Sam swapped the white tower and white king—“is called ‘castling.’ It protects the most important piece on the board.”

“The queen is more powerful,” Jack pointed out.

“True, but power doesn’t automatically make someone important. It’s what you do with your power that matters.”

“Like how you, Dean, and Cas work so hard to protect what’s important.” Jack touched the white castle and king.

Sam nodded. “The Family Business.”

Jack rolled his shoulders, flexing invisible wings. “I want to do that. I want to use my power for good.”

Sam smiled. “You already do.”

Notes:

My "Drabble a Day" for Inktober 2023, Day 14. Today's word was "castle," and I wanted to write a little something for Sam and Jack. I loved how quickly Sam took Jack under his wing, and I liked the idea of Sam teaching Jack the important things about life.
