Work Text:
Kyana cracked open the engine room door to see Dani, hunched at her desk, with her head in her arms. Kyana stepped into the room and made her way to Dani’s side.
“How are you feeling?” She asked quietly, not wanting to exacerbate the headache she was down with.
Dani just groaned in response.
Kyana winced sympathetically, tentatively putting a hand on her arm.
“Do you want to sit with me?” She offered.
Dani didn’t answer immediately, but eventually nodded, lethargically lifting her head from her desk and joining Kyana on the floor. Kyana opened her arms and wrapped them around Dani as she flopped down. Dani rested her head against Kyana’s collarbone and tucked her knees up to her chest. Kyana put a hand at the base of her neck, gently rubbing to both help soothe her aching head and hopefully relax her. Dani breathed out and closed her eyes.
“Love you,” Kyana murmured, hardly even noticing the words coming out of her mouth. They came so naturally.
Kyana woke to the sound of Dani whimpering. She looked down, worried. Dani was still half asleep with her forehead pressed to the curve of Kyana’s neck and seemed to be in discomfort. Her brows were furrowed and a couple soft pained sounds escaped her mouth.
“Dani?” Kyana asked, shaking her gently. “Dani, wake up.”
Dani’s eyes flickered open before squeezing shut again, the dim light in the room apparently still too bright for her currently over sensitive eyes. She hissed, pressing the heels of her palms into her eyes and shuddering.
“Dani? Are you okay?” Kyana asked, concern filling her voice.
Dani groaned. She gritted her teeth before inhaling harshly and quickly trying to sit up. “I’m gonna vomit.”
“Oh! Okay!” Kyana floundered for just a second before scooping her up and sprinting to the bathroom, placing Dani in front of the toilet right as she began to heave. Kyana held her hair back out of her face and used her other hand to rub circles on her back.
“It’s alright. It’s okay. Just let it out,” She soothed.
Seconds stretched into several long minutes as Dani continued to retch into the toilet. When her stomach finally settled, she spent a full minute still hunched over the toilet unable to do anything but take in deep, uneven gasps, trying to catch her breath. She leaned back into Kyana’s hand and shuddered, closing her eyes in exhaustion.
“You think you’re done for now?” Kyana asked.
Dani sniffed and nodded. She looked mildly delirious and very out of it. Kyana reached out and gently pulled her onto her lap. Dani whined and pressed her forehead against Kyana’s shoulder, her headache no doubt worsened by the harsh retching. Kyana rubbed her back, unsure what else to do. She was about to suggest going back to one of their rooms when she felt a couple drops of warm water hit her skin and heard Dani’s breath hitch.
“Oh, Dani,” she whispered. She tightened her grip on her, wishing she could hug all the pain away. “It’s okay. It’ll pass. It’s okay,” She murmured, partially trying to convince herself.
Kyana hadn’t witnessed many of Dani’s migraines, but VR-LA had warned her they could get pretty bad sometimes. Even so, for some reason she hadn’t expected it to be taking such a toll on her. Dani was stubborn to a fault. She was always the last one to mention an injury or any way she was hurt, preferring to walk it off until she died than ask for help. So to see her so obviously in pain when she usually tried so hard to hide it made Kyana more scared than she was prepared to handle. How bad was she hurting that she couldn’t even try to play it off? Kyana couldn’t imagine having a headache so bad it made you throw up, but apparently Dani had had them every couple months since she was a teenager.
Dani sniffed miserably as Kyana felt more tears steadily drip onto her shoulder.
“How can I help you?” She whispered.
Dani pressed her face deeper into Kyana’s skin. “Just— stay.”
“Okay. I’ll stay right here. I promise.”
