Chapter Text

Puck

I was slumped across a luxurious chair in the grand prison that was the Summer castle.

No, that wasn’t a metaphor for my deal with its king. This place was just indescribably boring. That was why, of course, I had to take it upon myself to brighten it up a little.

My current plot involves a specific treasured little trinket of Titania’s. Recently, she was just so enamored with this self-playing lute she’d gotten her hands on. How, I wasn’t quite sure. Maybe some deal, but knowing that basilisk, she’d probably tormented a poor soul out of it.

If it mysteriously went missing, well, that was only karma, right?

Unfortunately, that was when I got my summons from Lord Oberon.

I guess one could say that also spiced things up a bit, but since I’m on the receiving end this time, I was inclined to disagree. I can ignore it, but to be honest, if I’m about to piss off the queen, maybe it would be better to not piss off the king.

Actually, on second thought…

Nope. No. No banishment today! Or tomorrow. Hopefully.

I take my time getting to the throne room. I also pray Titania isn’t going to be there.

Thankfully, she isn’t. Oberon is sat upon his— terribly dull and uncomfortable, in my opinion, not that I would know or anything— throne. “Hey,” I chirp, as one does to their king. “What’s up?”

He regards me warily. “Robin,” he begins. “Good that you have decided to heed my call for once.”

He stands up and I can tell he’s got a job for me I won’t like. “The guards have reported some strange occurrences on the border by Winter. You are to investigate.”

Which doesn’t sound all that bad, meaning that there is absolutely a catch somewhere. “ And …,” I prompt.

And ,” he concedes, “there have been rumors all three Winter princes have been spontaneously called to Court, and released just as quickly. Most likely these things are connected.”

Ah. So there it was. Though it really was no secret of our history, the youngest Winter prince and I, Oberon used to turn a blind eye to our antics so long as I didn’t aggravate Winter or endanger Summer. He knew now also of our rivalry.
