Work Text:
Komaru didn’t knew when it started.
Maybe it was when she was 5 and he was 7. She ended up lost in the park, and he was the first to reach her. He hold her in a embrace until their parents found them.
Or maybe it was when she was 10, and had just changed schools, even though she was nervous about talking to new people, he reassured her and told her that it would be alright.
Those and countless other small moments in their life are forever burned into her memory.
They might be small moments to everybody else, but to her, they are special.
Simple moments that reminded her of his gentle and hopeful attitude.
The same attitude she fell for.
Those feelings started getting stronger when she was 13. At first she just thought that what she felt was simply admiration towards her older brother. That was until a certain invitation came in the mail.
The Hope’s Peak invitation.
They wanted her brother as the Ultimate Lucky Student.
Their parents are so happy about Makoto getting the invitation.
But for some reason, Komaru wasn’t.
At first she just thought that it was jealousy that her brother was going to the greatest High School in Japan, and she wasn’t.
But that thought didn’t last long.
During that night, while in bed, she started thinking about her big bro going to Hope’s Peak.
And for some reason she felt sad, afraid and lonely.
Komaru technically had friends.
She hanged out with some girls from her school, but her best friend, the one she could always count on, was her brother. She could always count on him, she talked to him about everything, and yeah, they fought and teased each other sometimes, but nothing too major.
That’s when it hit her.
She was afraid of being left behind.
Afraid of him abandoning her.
And could you blame her?
He was going to the best high school in Japan, with the best students of the country, all of them way more interesting than her.
She slept with those thoughts that night.
On the next day during breakfast, Makoto said that he was refusing the invitation.
Their parents looked shocked, but quickly accepted his decision.
Komaru on the other hand, couldn’t be more happier, her big bro was going to stay!
But Makoto was a very easy guy to read, and she noticed right away, why he didn’t want to go.
He didn’t felt like he deserved that invitation.
And for more that she wanted him to stay, to talk to her everyday about everything and nothing, to always be there, to not left her behind.
She made her decision, she got up from her seat and yelled that he should accept that invitation, that it is the opportunity of an lifetime and that he would be an idiot if he did not take it.
After saying this, she stormed off and locked herself in her room.
Truly, she wanted him to stay, but she also wanted him to see his own self-worth.
That’s why she ran away, not because she was angry, but because if she stayed, she would go back in her word and ask him to stay.
She passed that entire day locked in her bedroom, sometimes reading some of her manga or browsing the internet on her phone, but she didn’t come out even once.
By the end of the afternoon she heard knocking on her door.
It was Makoto.
She didn’t answer. She only hugged her pillow tighter to her chest.
After calling for her three times, there was silence. Then she heard him sitting in the floor and leaning against the door.
He said that he was sorry for making her angry, that he felt like she was the one that should had received that invitation.
She wanted to open that door and hug him, tell him how awesome he was and how he deserved that better than anyone...
But she didn’t.
He said that he had thought more about it, and she was right.
He was going to accept it.
After hearing that, she wanted to cry. She didn’t knew if it was of sadness or happiness.
He apologized again and then she heard him getting up and walking away.
After that, she finally got out of her room, they had dinner in silence, then their parents went to sleep.
She wasn’t tired in the slightest, so she walked outside and sat down at the backyard.
She looked at the stars and sighed. Soon, she felt someone sitting by her side.
She didn’t need to look to know who was it. After a little bit of silence, she asked when he was leaving.
He said it was on the next month, then silence again.
Until he called for her, she looked exactly at the moment that the moonlight hit both of them.
It made her heart flutter and the butterflies at her stomach to fly.
It was the perfect moment for her to say everything that her heart wanted to say.
But she didn’t.
She only smiled and said that she was happy for him, and that he truly deserved that invitation.
He smiled back and the two talked and laughed for hours on that night.
During that whole month, the two are basically inseparable, they went to amusement parks, they read manga together, and generally hanged out a lot more than before.
But soon enough, the month came to an end and it was time for him to go.
Their parents made a small party for his friends so everyone could say their goodbyes to him properly.
During the party, Komaru finally gathered enough courage to confess to him.
She grabbed her brother by the arm and pulled him up to her room.
There, she confessed everything.
How she felt about him, how she wanted him to hug her and never let go and also how she knew that it was impossible for them to be together.
At the moment, the girl truly felt like a boulder had been lifted from her shoulders.
Even if he didn’t like her back, at least Komaru knew that she had said everything that she wanted to say and she didn’t have any regrets.
But, for her suprise, her brother returned her feelings.
Konaru couldn’t been more ecstatic!
Then and there, she threw herself at his arms and hugged him for all those years she was holding her feelings in.
Makoto hugged her back, before pulling themselves closer and linking their lips.
Looking back at it now, Komaru could see how bad and awkward their first kiss really was, but she couldn’t deny just how magical it felt back then.
After the kiss, the two made a promise.
While Makoto couldn’t be there for her as much as before, he promised to call her everyday and to be back as soon as possible.
And she promised to wait for him, so one day, they can be together again.
After that, he went away.
It was painful to not have him by her side, but Komaru knew better than anyone that he was going to keep his promise and so would she.
After all, he was her dear big brother and she was his dearest little sister.
