Chapter Text
The drive was silent. Wednesday was lost in her thoughts, her eyes watching the world passing by through the window. Enid seemed to know what she was thinking, as she gently took her hand in hers.
"Are you okay?" she asked after a few more minutes.
"Yes. I just... I wasn't expecting all of these people to be there. It took me out of guard; that's all."
"I noticed... You don't like big crowds and that was really unexpected."
Enid kept holding Wednesday's hand during the rest of the drive.
"Do you wanna come in?" she asked once the three girls reached her doorway.
"I wouldn't want to bother you."
"You don't bother me at all, Willa. Plus, I have to give you back your jacket."
"Alright, then."
Enid smiled. Then, she took out her key and unlocked the door.
"You're back!" Yoko said in a hurry when the three girls entered the small apartment. "I've been texting you for the past fifteen minutes!"
"Oh. Sorry, I didn't really looked at my phone. What's wrong?"
"There's an article."
Enid sighed. "Oh, this. Yeah, we already saw it at the café. There pas paparazzi waiting for Wednesday outside." She turned to Wednesday. "Do you wanna stay for a bit?"
"I have nothing else to do today. I accept your offer."
Emma's eyes lightened. "Great! Come on, I'll show you my room!"
Wednesday didn't have time to answer, as she was dragged by the hand to Emma's bedroom.
As she expected, the room was really... really Enid. There was a lot of colors everywhere as well as plushies and fairy lights.
The wall behind Emma's bed was white; a rainbow was painted on it with the girl's name written in calligraphy.
There was also a lot of bookshelves.
"Your room is amazing, little monster," the raven said after a minute. "The painted wall is beautiful; it suits you."
"Thank you! Auntie Yoko painted it with mommy."
Wednesday approached the bookshelves, looking at the books from closer. She saw her own books on the top shelf, as well as books she loved.
"Frankenstein?"
"Yes! I love it. Mommy said my middle name is Mary because of Mary Shelley."
"Yes, she told me. Dracula? I see you like classics."
"I love them. But my favorite is Frankenstein."
"Mine too."
While the girls talked, Enid and Yoko had a little conversation too.
"So," the vampire spoke, "how was breakfast with the one and only Wednesday Addams?"
Enid blushed a bit. "It was amazing. She took us to a French café; everything was so good!"
"And so expensive I assume?"
"Kinda. But you know how Wednesday is."
"She looks like a rich, annoying girl who thinks she's better than everyone."
The wolf frowned. "Why are you saying this? She's not."
"She is. She shows up wearing Louboutin, she gives you a five-hundred-dollar bill, take you to rich restaurants... She likes to show that she has money. She's everything I hate. I thought she was cool when we met at the bookstore, but the more I see her the more I realize that I was false."
"You don't know her, Yoko. She's not like that, I promise. She's just... Wednesday. She wears Louboutin, so what? She likes them. And she wanted to help me with the money."
"Whatever you say. I don't like her."
"Don't judge a book by it's cover. I promise, she's really nice. She might be a bit... special, but that's how she is. She's just being herself. Plus, have you seen how soft and caring she is with Emma? This is the cutest thing I've ever seen."
"Whatever you say, wolfie. But if she hurts you, I'll kill her."
Enid rolled her eyes. "By the way, I should check on them. Making sure Em doesn't annoy Wednesday too much."
Getting up from the couch, the wolf walked towards her daughter's room. She stopped at the door who was left ajar when she heard voices.
"I have some books you could like at home. I translated some of them myself as there is no current translations; I could bring them to you," Wednesday spoke.
"Oh! What kind of books? From what languages?"
"I have an original copy in Greek of Homer's Odyssey, for example. You told me that you spoke a bit of Greek, right?"
Emma nodded, a smile on her face.
"I also have some books in Spanish if you want to practice and I have some short stories I translated from Romanian, Russian and some other languages."
"Woah... I'd love to have them!"
Wednesday smiled and Enid froze.
Wednesday Addams smiling? That was terrifying.
"Perfect."
They were interrupted by Enid entering the room.
"Uh, hey. I just wanted to check. I hope Em doesn't bother you much."
"Don't worry, she is not bothering me, Enid. Quite the contrary."
"Good, good... Do you maybe wanna stay for lunch? I'm a not an amazing cooker but I'll do my best."
The raven hesitated. Should she stay?
Emma looked at her with puppy eyes and her decision was quickly made. How could she resist those charming blue eyes?
"Alright. Thank you for the invitation; I appreciate it."
"Yeah!" Emma giggled happily, hugging Wednesday's waist.
The girl didn't push her away. She gently wrapped an arm around the little blonde.
"Of course! Do you wanna come back to the living room? Or else Em won't leave you alone," Enid giggled.
Wednesday looked down at the blonde. "I appreciate Emma's company. I don't mind staying here."
"You're avoiding Yoko, aren't you?"
Wednesday stared at the wolf. "You are perceptive."
"I know you, Willa."
"Maybe you do."
"Yoko is nice, you know?"
"She doesn't like me. I can see it, Enid."
Enid sighed. "She is just overprotective with me. It's not against you. Maybe you could help me making lunch? So you won't spend too much time with her if it makes you feel better."
"Admit you just want help because you can't cook."
The blonde chuckled. "You got me there. You can make whatever you want. There's still some time, I can go buy what you need."
Wednesday thought for a few seconds then nodded. "Alright. Whatever I want you said?"
"Yup. Just no poison, okay?"
"How sad, I wanted to make a nightshades smoothie," she smirked playfully.
Enid smiled. "Just make me a list so I can go buy what you need."
"No, I'm coming with you."
"As you want." The blonde looked at Emma. "Em, are you coming with us?"
Emma nodded. Then, the three girls got out of the bedroom. "Hey, Yoko? We're going to get some groceries. Need anything?"
"No thanks, babycakes."
Wednesday stared at the vampire with daggers in her eyes. If a look could kill, Yoko would already be six feet under; vampire or not.
So the three girls went to the store. Thankfully, it was just a few minutes walk so they didn't have to take the car — hopefully it will help the raven not being stalked by paparazzi.
Before she left, she quickly told her driver that he could go home and that she will contact him later.
"So," Enid said once they entered the store, "what do we need? And what are you making, by the way?"
"It's a surprise."
"A surprise?"
"Yes, a surprise."
The blonde raised an eyebrow. "Is this something I like?"
"Obviously. It will be faster if we split, don't you think?"
"That's usually how the best friend dies in horror movies."
"Lucky for you, we are in a grocery store and not a horror movie."
"Haven't you watch the last Scream movie? They were attacked at the store."
"I don't watch horror movies, Enid."
"We should make something about it. So, we split. What do you need me to take?"
"I need tomatoes, onions, a lime and fresh cilantro."
"Okay! Em, you coming?"
Emma shook her head. "I wanna go with Wednesday."
"Uh..." Enid looked up at the raven.
"It's alright, Enid."
"Okay, then... Stay next to Wednesday, okay? And don't bother her."
"I don't bother her, mommy, she said it before!"
Wednesday nodded. "Of course she doesn't bother me, Enid. Emma is a little demon."
Enid rolled her eyes and turned to Emma. "This means you're an angel, baby."
The girls indeed split.
Wednesday took Emma's hand in hers — the store was rather crowded, she didn't want anything bad to happen to her — and they both made their way to another alley.
The girl took some cheddar cheese, ground beef, sour cream and different spices and seasonings.
"What are you gonna make?" Emma asked.
"Tacos. But you can't tell your mother, it's a surprise."
"Promise! But why is this a surprise?"
"It's a long story. When we were in school together I shared my lunch with her as her mother — your grandmother — gave her raw meat because, according to her, that's what werewolves eat. But your mother hated it so I shared my lunch. She loved it."
"She's not my grandmother," Emma growled.
"Right. Sorry, I didn't mean to assume anything."
"It's okay. But she's mean, I hate her."
"Have you... met her before?"
"No, but mommy told me what she did. I hate her, she made mommy cry."
"I hate her too, little monster." Seeing that Emma's happy mood went down, she continued, "do you want anything? Candies? Chocolate or maybe toys?"
The blonde's face lightened up. "Can we get chocolate? And popcorn!"
"Whatever you want. Sweet or salted popcorn?"
"Sweet."
As the raven was about to grab the popcorn, she was interrupted by a voice she didn't recognize.
"Oh my God, you're Wednesday Addams!" a girl said. She seemed to be around seventeen, according to Wednesday. "I totally love your books, I'm so sad I wasn't in New York for your book signing! But I've seen the video on Youtube and you're like, so cool! Could I take a picture with you??"
"I'm glad you enjoyed my books. Of course..."
The girl took out her phone and took a selfie with Wednesday. "Thank you so much! I can't believe you're here."
Emma looked at the exchange with confusion. For her, Wednesday was just her mom's friend and the girl who wrote her favorite books. She didn't understand all the fuss. So she gently pulled at her sleeve, hoping to get her attention.
Wednesday's eyes moved from the girl to Emma.
"Can we go now? I'm hungry," the blonde mumbled.
The teenager girl smiled. "Aw, you're daughter is so cute! I'll go now, I don't want to bother you. Thank you so much for the photo!"
Before Wednesday could correct her, the girl was gone.
Why did everyone thought Emma was her daughter? Emma was blonde; Wednesday was a brunette. It was clear that they weren't related: they didn't look alike at all. However, it wasn't the first time someone thought the girl was hers.
After this, they finished shopping and joined Enid where they split earlier.
"Did you find everything I asked for?" the brunette asked.
"Yes! Did you?"
"Perfectly."
They thus paid for all the food — Wednesday insisted she paid herself — then they walked home.
"Ah, there she is!" they heard someone shout once they arrived at Enid's building.
"Shit," Wednesday swore. The paparazzi were there, waiting for her.
Quickly, the crowd approached the girls and there was cameras flashing all around her.
How did they even find her here? At Enid's apartment?
Clearly, going public was the worst idea the Addams girl ever had in her entire life.
"How did they even find you here?" Enid sighed sadly, holding Emma's hand tighter.
"I have no idea. I am sorry they are here; now they know where you live and after the article, something tells me that they won't leave you alone. I am truly sorry; it wasn't my attention."
"I know, it's not your fault. Don't worry about it, Willa."
Emma looked around her, panicking a bit. She wasn't used to big crowds and her small height didn't make things better. She felt claustrophobic in the middle of all those paparazzi.
"Mommy..." she murmured, her grip tightening on her mother's hand.
"Come here, baby." The blonde crouched down and took her daughter in her arms.
"Wednesday, a word for the New York Times?" a reporter asked, a mic in his hand.
"Wednesday, please, can you answer some questions for Variety?" another one shouted through the crowd.
The raven quickly grabbed Enid's hand and made her way to the entrance of the building, trying to walk through all the paparazzi and reporters.
They made it to the hall after five endless minutes and quickly entered the elevator.
The building didn't stop the paparazzi from following them, though.
"Don't they have any respect?" Wednesday scoffed once the door of the elevator closed.
"Apparently not..."
"I'm so sorry, I didn't think they would find me here. Going public was a bad idea, I shouldn't have."
"I already said it, don't worry, Willa."
"No, I do worry. You don't understand, Enid, they know where you live and they know I am here. With you. They will harass you to make an interview and force you to answer questions about me."
"And you know I won't tell them anything."
"Yes, but—"
"No buts. I can take care of myself, Wednesday. Stop worrying about me, though I admit that it's kinda cute."
Emma chuckled.
They finally arrived at Enid's apartment and quickly entered it, closing the door behind them.
"Ah, there you are!" Yoko sighed. "Have you seen all those people outside?"
"Hard not to see them," Wednesday rolled her eyes. "How did they even know I was here?"
"Someone posted a photo of the car you rented at the café this morning. Someone recognized it and posted it on Twitter."
Enid scoffed, posing the groceries bags in the kitchen counter. "Seriously? They're literally stalking her!"
"Welcome to the celebrity world."
Wednesday walked towards the window and looked through it. She had a perfect view on the road. The crowd was still there, as she expected.
A paparazzi noticed her through the window and took pictures of her before she had time to step away, sighing.
"We should start making lunch," she said after a minute.
Enid smiled. "So, what are we making?"
"It's a surprise."
"Seriously? Why won't you tell me?"
"Not telling you is the whole point of the surprise, Enid."
"Ugh, why are you always so secretive?"
"Because I'm Wednesday Addams."
"Hm. True."
Yoko rolled her eyes from the couch. "Okay, can you two stop fighting like an old married couple and start making lunch? Emma's hungry in case you haven't notice yet."
The wolf blushed. Wednesday, on the other side, kept her stoic expression. Was she angry? Embarrassed? Planning a murder? No one knew.
"Okay..." Enid murmured after a few seconds, still embarrassed by Yoko's comment. "What can I do to help?"
"You can cut the onions and tomatoes in small cubes."
"Oki doki!"
While Enid took care of the vegetables, Wednesday started making fresh tortillas.
Emma looked at them with a smile while she watched videos with Yoko.
After about five minutes, Wednesday started hearing small cries.
"...Enid?"
"Hm?"
"Are you crying?"
"Yup."
"Did I said something wrong?"
The blonde raised an eyebrow. "Why would you think this, Willa?"
"I don't know... Why are you crying, then?"
"The onions, Wednesday. The onions."
"Oh."
The wolf rolled her red-ish eyes. "Done. Can I do something else now?"
"Could you cook the ground beef with some oil? Then you need to add a bit of all the seasonings I bought and cook it for another five minutes."
"Okay!"
Once the tortillas were made, Wednesday took care of the cheddar cheese. She grated it — not too much, she just needed it to be in small 'slices' but not too small either — then she helped Enid with the meat.
"Willa..."
"Yes?"
"Are we making tacos??"
The raven rolled her eyes. "It took you half an hour to realize."
"Oh my God! Is this the same recipe as Grandmama??"
"Normally. Is this okay?"
"This is perfect! I haven't ate tacos since—" She stopped for a second, her smile fading a bit. "—since I left."
Wednesday didn't answer. Instead, she started to assemble the tacos, adding some sour cream mixed with lime juice on the meat while Enid dressed the table.
"It's ready," the raven informed the two blondes as she served the plates.
Emma, who was already seated at the table, looked at her taco with a big smile on her face. "It smells so good!"
Yoko looked at the food on the table. "It's not ugly, Addams. Didn't know you could cook."
"I can do a lot of things, Tanaka. Of course, you can't know; you don't know me."
Enid looked at her two friends. It was clear that, for some unknown reason, they didn't like each other.
Trying to ignore them, she took a bite and was immediately in heaven.
"What's that?"
"Tacos. Have you never tried it?"
"Nope. Hm! That's delicious! Where did you got them?"
"Grandmama made them."
"Grandmama?"
"Mi abuela."
"Wednesday, I don't speak Spanish."
That's my grandmother. We call her Grandmama."
"Ohh. Okay. Wait, you speak Spanish?"
"Of course. My father is Mexican. I can also speak French, Italian, German and many more. Pugsley and I were home-schooled for all our lives; we had plenty of time to learn new languages."
"Wow! That's so cool. I can only speak English. Και ελληνικά (kai elliniká – and Greek)."
Wednesday raised an eyebrow. "You speak Greek?"
"Yup! I'm half-Greek, duh!"
"Impressing."
"So you're half-Mexican, right?"
"Indeed."
"That's so cool. Oh, and you can tell your Grandmama that those tacos are delicious. That's probably the best thing I've ever eat."
"Enid? Enid, are you okay?" Yoko shook her head in front of the blonde's eyes.
"Hm? Yeah, sorry, what did you say?"
"Gosh, you scared me! I thought she, like, poisoned you for a second."
"Uh?"
"You froze for a minute," Wednesday explained. "And for your information, Tanaka, I would never risk poisoning Enid or Emma."
Yoko scoffed softly.
"Oh... Sorry, I'm just tired I guess. I'm fine," Enid answered with a smile. "This taco is so delicious, Willa. It tastes exactly the same as Grandmama's!"
"Thank you. I'm glad you enjoy it; I wanted it to be as good as Grandmama's."
"They are, believe me. That's the same ones you shared with me at school when my mom gave me raw meat..."
"That's why I made this."
"I can't believe you remembered."
"How could I not? I'm surprised you remembered."
"I could never forget this taste. That's so delicious. Thank you for making this, this means a lot to me. It reminds me of when we were younger."
Maybe she was imagining it, but Enid swore she saw Wednesday's lips curling into a tiny, almost invisible smile. She wasn't entirely sure, though; it's not like she had been looking at her lips. Of course not. Why would she?
Emma find it delicious too. So delicious that she took a second taco.
While they ate their human food, Yoko drank a blood bag she got at the hospital a few days ago. She was glad a vampire was working there, so she could sell her some blood.
After all, it was hard to find outcasts in New York City.
After they finished eating, Wednesday took care of washing the dishes. Enid insisted in helping her, but the Addams girl was stubborn and of course refused.
So Enid decided to look through the window.
"They're still here," she sighed. "Seriously, it's been, like, an hour! Don't they have a life?"
"Apparently not."
"Ugh! You can't go out right now or they won't stop asking you questions. I know you don't like big crowds, Willa."
"So you are saying that I should stay here?"
"Until they leave, yeah."
"They are as stubborn as me. What if they stay here all night?"
"Then you could stay."
