Wait For Him

Summary:

A rewrite of the lyrics to "Wait For It" from Hamilton The Musical as if it were sung by Spock Prime in the Kelvin timeline to the young James Kirk of that universe.

The perspective flips between reminiscences about the people he knew in the original timeline - in particular, the family from whom he inherited a complicated legacy, and the man at whose side he served for several decades - and his life on New Vulcan in the new timeline.
He attempts to impart advice to this Kirk; but in doing so, cannot help but compare the two Kirks he has known to each other.
Inevitably, this causes him to miss his Jim with a renewed fervour, and he resolves to wait for him, for just a little longer...

Notes:

This is the third work I've done inspired by a Star Trek fanvid, and the second involving a rewrite of a song from Hamilton, but each one is unique and I treasure them each in different ways.
This one, for instance, I like because of the minimal amount of rewriting I actually had to do to get it to fit the narrative I wanted to tell (there are a few verses that I left completely untouched because they already worked so well) - which is all down to RhaegalKS's excellent choice of song for their fanvid!
I couldn't have done this without them, so I say thank you to them - and to all those out there creating fanvids, I appreciate your work and can't wait to see more of it!

Work Text:

This new James Kirk writes to me when time permits he can
I'm aiding the colony efforts on New Vulcan
He's on the Enterprise out in space
He's trying to keep the galaxy in line
And although he wears that same face
He is not Jim, not mine

Love doesn't discriminate
Between the sinners and the saints
It takes and it takes and it takes
And we keep loving anyway
We laugh and we cry and we break
And we make our mistakes
And if there's a reason I'm by Jim's side
When so many have tried
Then I'm willing to wait for it
I'm willing to wait for it

My grandmother was a stalwart Vulcan leader
(Leader, leader, leader)
But there are things that our
Rituals and logic won't teach you
(Teach you, Teach you, Teach you)
My mother was a genius (Genius)
My father commanded respect (Respect, Respect)
When they died they left no instructions
Just a legacy to protect

Death doesn't discriminate
Between the sinners and the saints
It takes and it takes and it takes
And we keep living anyway
We rise and we fall and we break
And we make our mistakes
And if there's a reason I'm still alive
When everyone who loves me has died
I'm willing to wait for it (Wait for it)
I'm willing to wait for it

I am the one thing in life I can control
(Wait for it, wait for it, wait for it, wait for it)
I am inimitable
I am an original

I was falling behind, I was too late
(Far too late, far too late, far too late, far too late)
I'll do what it takes
Nero, I lie in wait (Wait, wait, wait)

This James Kirk faces an endless uphill climb
(Climb, climb, climb)
He has something to prove
He has nothing to lose
(Lose, lose, lose, lose)
My t'hy'la was relentless
He wasted no time
(Time, time, time)
What is it like in his shoes?

This Captain doesn't hesitate
He exhibits no restraint
He takes and he takes and he takes
And he keeps winning anyway
He changes the game
He plays and he raises the stakes

And if there's a reason
He seems to thrive when so few survive, then so be it
I'm willing to fight for him (Fight for him)
I'm willing to fight for him

Life doesn't discriminate
Between the sinners and the saints
It takes and it takes and it takes
(And we keep living anyway)
We rise (and we fall)
We fall (and we break)
(And we make our mistakes)
And if there's a reason I'm still alive
When so many have died
Then I'm willin' to-

Wait for him (Wait for him, wait for him)
Wait for him (Wait for him, wait for him)
(Wait for him, wait for him, wait for him, wait for him, wait for him)
(Wait)

Notes:

I unfortunately possess neither the technical skills, nor the vocal talent, to effectively render this song in audio form, for which I apologise.
It would have been amazing if I could have turned this work into an actual song which could be used in fanvids like the one that inspired me; and I'm sorry that I wasn't able to do so.

I hope that you have enjoyed this work anyway, and I will be delighted with any kudos/comments you wish to leave - thank you!
