Work Text:
Klee was dreaming.
She was playing pirates in the fields near Windrise, having the time of her life, as Kaeya followed along. The map was leading them to the treasure and she looked at the place. Here, in the center of a field, lies the treasure.
She looked back to point to the spot where she buried the treasure, and noticed that Kaeya, who was following behind her, stopped moving. He was lying on the ground.
Thinking he was being silly, and playing with her, she ran up to him and laid on the ground too. "Kaeya!" She said giggling, before trying to shake him. Even though she shook him, and tugged at his hand to try to get them up, Kaeya didn't move. Klee got confused. Was he asleep? Maybe he'd wake up if she used one of her jumpy dumpty's to make noise. She took a jumpy dumpty and threw it into the field nearby. A few seconds passed and they exploded. Klee smiled, running back to see if it worked, but he still didn't wake up.
"Kaeya? Come on. This is not much fun." No response. The little girl began trying to shake him, to do something, anything. She starts to shake, confused as to why Kaeya wasn't moving. "Klee doesn't get it. Why won't you get up, Kaeya?" She said, looking at him. No response came from the Calvary captain. Klee noticed his eye was grey, and his vision was blank. Panicking, she started shaking him as fast as she could, trying to wake him up. "Kaeya! Klee doesn't wanna play anymore." She said, crying. She clung to him and he started to turn to dust, a large gust of wind swept him away. "Come back!" She grabbed his hand, in a desperate attempt to get him to stay, "Please don't go!" she pleaded, yet his hand turned to dust, taken by wind, the only thing remaining was his vision. The little girl began sobbing, her tears became waterfalls as she shook. Why did he leave?
"Kaeya!"

She woke up, and froze. It was a dream? But it felt so real... Klee couldn't stop herself from crying. "It felt so real... Klee hates bad dreams." She couldn't sleep. Wait. Was Kaeya... "Kaeya..." Klee said, as she gathered her courage, before grabbing her blankets, and leaving her room. She walked down the hallway and up the stairs, creeping through the corridor carefully as to not wake Jean or the others. Klee made it to Kaeya's room and creaked the door open to peak her head in.
Kaeya was writing something down when he heard the door open. He sighed and put his pen down and turned around in his chair, so when he saw Klee, he smiled. "Kaeya... can I come in?" She asked.
"Of course", he said. Klee entered the room, closing the door behind her. Kaeya stood, walking over, picking her up, before sitting down on the bed. "So, what is our brave and wondrous sparknight doing up so late? We can't go treasure hunting if you're sleepy." He said, giggling. Klee looked away, "I had a nightmare... you wouldn't..." Her voice began to crack as Klee began to shake.
"What? A nightmare?" Kaeya didn't understand, but he saw Klee shaking and held her. "You wouldn't get up, or move. Klee didn't understand but then, your eyes are grey, your vision gone, a-and you turn to dust, and you Left-"
"Klee..." Kaeya said, grabbing her attention, and causing the tears to stop for a moment. "Slow down, just breathe. Here, like this," Kaeya began to take deep breaths, and Klee followed before giggling softly. "Kaeya, I," She paused, taking a deep breath before hugging the man tightly as if he would disappear. "Klee thought you were gone... I was scared" Kaeya sighed as he wiped the tears from her eyes. "Klee. It's okay. I won't leave you." He said, and as a result, Klee looked at him with a small smile. "Besides sometimes, and don't tell Jean I said this, but... sometimes we get scared too. Scared that something bad may happen. I do too."
"You do?"
"Yes, I do. But everytime I am reminded I have to put on a brave face. Do you know why, Klee?" He asked. Klee shook her head, still very confused. "Is it... because of me?" She asked, and he couldn't help but smile, giggling at her confusion. "Yes, it is. You, always are so happy, and you are so kind. You encourage many people, myself included to always believe in ourselves. When trouble rears it's ugly head and things get rough, when I'm on the verge of defeat, I put on a brave face and think to myself, "Klee wouldn't want me to quit", and I get back up, and I keep pushing. So... in a way, yes, it it because of you Klee." He said, causing the little girl to smile.
Thunder roared outside, and Klee held onto Kaeya. Kaeya chuckled, before reassuring Klee the thunder wouldn't hurt her. He laid down and held the kid. Klee smiled, as she yawned, her eyes getting heavier and heavier. She rested next to Kaeya, and suprisingly, he didn't mind. He sighed, before looking back at Klee to ask if she needed anything, but she was already fast asleep. He smiled before putting a blanket over her and turning out the lights.
Kaeya felt bad for her, watching someone you love die in front of them, even in a dream. He knew eventually he'd have to choice between his bloodline or Mondstadt, but he refused. Kaeya Alberich refused for several reasons, the main one? The main reason was all because of Klee. She looked up to him, and she had helped him through so much. He knew if he made a choice, it could severely hurt Klee.
Kaeya couldn't bring himself to do it; to make a decision, because if he left her behind, he'd never forgive himself. He held Klee, worried that she'd disappear just as quickly. After all...
She never gave up on him, so why should he?

The next morning, Jean was walking through the headquarters, as she went to get Kaeya and Klee up for the day. She knocked on Klee's door first, but when she didn't find Klee in her room, she got worried. Making her way to Kaeya's room, she knocked gently on the door and looked inside. She froze when she saw Kaeya who was getting ready while holding a sleeping Klee, who had a blanket or two wrapped around her. Kaeya was putting his boots on, when he glanced over to see Jean.
"Why good morning, Jean." Kaeya said in a charming, yet quiet manner. Jean looked at him. "Good morning. Why is she wrapped in blankets?"
"That, is a question you can ask her when she wakes up. She had a rough night last night, but thankfully she dealt with it quite well." He said, standing up before handing the report to Jean. "The report, Acting Grand Master. Now, if you'll excuse me," Kaeya said, before he looked down at Klee, "I have to go make our young sparknight breakfast."
Jean didn't notice the fact that Kaeya let Klee hold onto him while she slept. He didn't mind, as he knew she needed the sleep. Bad dreams are not reality, but sometimes, they can try to trick people into thinking they are. He was glad Klee sought him out, because she really needed the support.
Support he was more than happy to provide.
