The Prince and his commoner

Chapter 3: Forest

Chapter Text

It was a bit of a walk to get to the city, I had to be sneaky and try to stay away guards. I walked down hallways, tiptoeing across them.

I made it to the exit of the castle, one of the many exits we had, I pushed open the door and slipped through, softly closing it on my way out.

I went alone this time, Me and Tatiana sometimes snuck out to enjoy the city a little. But Since we got caught last week we decided to lay a low profile for a while.

Well… I got bored, sitting in the castle all day and night, Tatiana being my only friends yet she had to work most of the time.

I walked through the city, waving softly at the people I passed by. I had my robe on, which covered my face from being seen by any guards who trotted the city.

I noticed a commotion going on just outside of the city, into a tree filled area that hid the moons light. I decided to walk to it, the scene came closer.

A boy. Two of them. One was sitting on the ground, a project in his lap and his arms raised, trying to grab back the stolen item. The other boy was trying to take it, screaming nonsense at him.

”Give it back!” He yelled as it escaped his grasp, going right into the others hand.

”Fight me, loser,” he dangled the thing above him, it was a screw driver.

”Give it back, Now!” He repeated, trying to grab the dangling screw driver.

”He said give it back,” I stepped forward, saying in my best-demanding voice.

The two were both startled equally, the screwdriver dropped into the boys hand, which in a split second the other boy got bad.

”Who do you think you are?” The other boy scowled, turning to face me.

I thought for a moment, studying his face, he seemed like the kind of guy who was afraid of snakes. Don’t know how, don’t know why. Just got that feeling.

”Your worst nightmare,” I grinned, my head shifting from its irregular human face to a replica of a snake as I pulled down my hood.

And I guessed it right, his eyes widened and sweat pooled down his face and neck, he stumbled as he ran away into the forest, somewhere to be seen hopefully never.

I shifted my face back. I wasn’t used to that just yet. Which was another part of king training I had. To learn how to shift quickly to defend yourself.

I blinked, looking at the other boy, he seemed startled too, not sure what to do at all; if he should run or accept defeat.

In a split second his eyes seem to wander around my form, starting to look fascinated at what just happened.

”What was that?” He asked, putting the screwdriver and project in his hands and getting up carefully.

I went silent, not really sure how to explain it, “Magic?”

”That was cool,” he smiled, stepping towards me.

”What’s your name? I haven’t seen you in town before… in fact,” he put a finger to his chin, “You look oddly familiar…”

He inched closer to my face, inspecting me wayy to closely…

”Rigel,” I stated, staring into his eyes.

His eyes widened with surprise, “Prince Rigel? Prince Rigel of the Supernova Family?!” He seemed surprised.

”Just call me Rigel,” I said rather quietly, looking back into the town, and yep that bully was definitely not coming back.

”Okay! Uh, Wow,” he chuckled nervously, not sure what to do, I wasn’t sure either. I shouldn’t even be here but It was better than the boringness in the castle.

”What’s your name?” I asked him, hoping to get a better conversation going.

”Benjamin,” He smiled, “This is so strange… in a good way!”

I raised an eyebrow, ”How so?”

He blinked, “You know. You’re here.. in town. Not in the castle where anyone would dream to be.”

Dream to be? Oh the hopes are way to high… I smiled a little, “Trust me, it gets exhausting after 17 years.”

”Really? I didn’t expect that-“ He placed his screwdriver into his pocket.

”I don’t think anybody really does,” I looked at the project he was working on, it looked interesting, “What’s that?” I pointed to it.

He looked at his hand, “Oh! It’s a work in progress for the big project I’m working on!”

“Huh… What’s the project you’re working on?” I raised an eyebrow.

”That’s a secret for now,” He winked, placing a finger over his lips, “One day, though… One day.”

I smiled a little, glad to see he could have his dreams, “Something big?”

He nodded, “Very.”

There was nothing else really to say, I looked back into town and then back at him.

”You don’t come to town often, do you?” He asked me.

I shook my head, “Rarely, Why?”

“I can show you around! If you don’t mind,” he smiled nervously.

I liked the idea, “Ok.”

He looked a bit surprised, “Alright! Let’s go,” he smiled, holding out his hand.

I hesitated for a second, pulling my hood back up, but then latched onto his hand, he took my out of the forest, It took a second for my eyes to adjust to the lights again. He showed me around the houses. He told be about the few people who lives places, and some of the people who walked by that I would normally see.

We walked past a food stand, they had a freezer next to it and I saw a little sign… Dodo pop… I stopped to see how much they were, unlatching from Benjamin to pay for two.

The clerk smiled, “Here ya go youngin,” He handed me two.

”Thank you,” I took them and smiled, heading back towards the boy.

He looked at me, raising an eyebrow, I handed him one since I thought he might want one if I was buying one. He took it hesitantly, smiling.

”Thanks, Rigel!” He said, looking at the popsicle and then at me again.

I nodded, unwrapping the popsicle and taking a bite. We went on, eating our popsicles and walking around. He taught me a bit about the town…

hours later, we started to get a bit tired, the sun was getting close to rising. I looked up at the sky.

“I should go… Bye,” I looked at Benjamin, and he looked at me.

He looked up into the sky as well, “Alight… it is getting early. Will I see you again?” He asked me suddenly.

I looked at the castle, “Maybe.” I said, waving goodbye as I stepped away, a smile smile growing on my lips.

He smiled back, waving goodbye, “Bye Rigel,” he said.

”Bye…” I repeated, finally walking off and back to the castle…

It was a bit of a walk, but I managed to make it into the castle before anyone noticed.

I went straight to my room and closed the door, collapsing on my bed, letting exhaustion over come my body…

Today was a great day. I made a friend, I think. Well I hope. He was really nice.

I sighed… shutting my eyes and finally falling fast asleep… returning to a world of nothingness……
