Feeding a life companion

Summary:

Dean was a beautiful little kitten. The long soft fur; white with dark tabby markings and adorable little tufts on his ears. His eyes were a soft green with the tiniest little flecks of brown. Affectionately referred to as ‘t-rex eyes’ by his owner. Kitty Dean was the adventurer. The one who hated being confined to his home. The one who wanted to meet others, watch the world outside. Wanted to hunt and protect his home from intruders. That was all kitty Dean wanted in life.

Cas was different. A beautiful white little bundle, with ginger on his ears and tail. His eyes were a piercing blue, and mesmerising to look at. Far more timid in himself, kitty Cas preferred the comforts of home.

--------------

When cat Dean stops hunting and becomes housebound, cat Cas decides takes up his hunting mantle.

Work Text:

You couldn’t get two more different animals. When their owners first got them as kittens, they decided to name them after their favourite characters in Supernatural, Cas and Dean. It just made sense.

Cuddling up in the bedroom, staying in the garden and staring into the distance. Getting cuddles with his owner whilst they worked from home. But the thing he loved the most was cuddling with kitty Dean. Seeking him out in the house and curling up as close as possible. Being happiest when they were squashed onto a tiny chair with barely enough room.

As they grew, kitty Dean became an effective hunter. Birds, mice, frogs, lizards, slow worms, no matter the animal he could catch it. Often coming home with his prize to show his exasperated owner, who would pet him until he was happy and pliant before taking it away. He enjoyed the gratitude and the feelings of love from his owner. It prompted him to catch more.

Kitty Cas didn’t hunt. He couldn’t, anytime he tried he came up with nothing. Frustrated at his lack of skill, he just decided to sit and stare. Watch kitty Dean in his pursuits and dream of being able to do it himself one day.

As time went on things started to change. Dean became more housebound. Preferring to spend his days curled up on his little perch. Staring out into the garden, sleeping for hours at a time. Cas was worried about his life companion. Always checking on his whereabouts; grooming him to make sure his fur still looked fluffy and beautiful. Making sure he was okay. Whilst it annoyed Dean, he also loved the affection his companion showed for him.

With kitty Dean out of action, kitty Cas decided it was time to learn to hunt. Bring his companion the food he couldn’t catch for himself due to his new found laziness. At first, he couldn’t, always losing his mark in the undergrowth of his human’s home. Then he would have his kills taken off him. The humans using the same trick they would use with his companion. Cuddling and fussing him before taking his kill. It was frustrating.

Gradually he became an effective hunter himself, like his companion. The only problem was his owner. Still they would do everything to prevent him from getting his kill to Dean. They would block him at the door. All efforts to get Dean to come to him were fruitless as well. It seemed hopeless.

Until one day there was success. His human was too distracted on the TV to notice when he slipped in, a tiny mouse in his mouth. Swiftly, he made his way upstairs to find his companion. Finding him asleep on his owners bed. He dropped the little mouse in front of kitty Dean, who raised his head, staring up at him with bleary eyes before looking down at the mouse.

“Mreow.” It was a sleepy question, was the mouse for him? Due to his naturally quiet nature, kitty Cas gave a small rumbling growl as confirmation. “Miaow.” This time it was a thank you. A puff of pride entered kitty Cas’s fur as he realised his life companion was happy.

Dean stood from the bed, stretching before moving over to give kitty Cas some room next to him. The little white ball of fluff accepted the invitation. Cuddling up close with Dean wrapped around him, head resting on his body. They both purred in contentment at each other’s closeness before finally falling into a deep sleep. Only to be startled hours later by their human screaming at the sight of a dead mouse on her bed.

He guessed he would have to go hunt his companion a new one now.
