Work Text:
Setting:
- It is perpetually spring in Bugaria (and perpetually autumn in Golden Settlement)
- The Leafbug Tribes do not have a full government other than respecting the strongest leafbug, they are still a developing culture. However, they are open to diplomacy if they can understand others.
- If there are crystals in the world of Bug Fables, it's habitable. Every place that thrives in the world has some special part that keeps them safe.
- Behind the locked doors of the Ant Palace are food storages, residential chambers, and larvae districts. Nothing too fancy.
- Giant's Lair does not have a basement.
- The Dead Lands surround Bugaria from all sides, Giant's Lair being just a small portion of it.
- The "2 bugs per exploration team" minor plot point was a thing that the developers admit that they could've thought about a bit more. Rather than saying "2 bugs max," it's meant to ensure that nobody wandered off alone.
- Bugaria has a normal calendar. A "moon" is used to refer to months (and Genow mentions that he slipped a couple times on that end)
- Snakemouth Den's entrance is a coincidence forged by nature. While there are no snakes in Bug Fables, the concept of snakes are still present in folklore.
- Magic can't be learned, but Ancient Crystals can lead to developing magic abilities.
- Bugnish is universal in the sense that every kingdom learns it, and it's generally widespread enough to be a "common tongue". However, it must still be learned. Otherwise, Leafbugs would speak normally with Team Snakemouth.
- The Frostlings, Frozen Abomihoneys and Beloskick from the Abomi Nation crossover are canon to Bug Fables. Beloskicks are hidden and the Frostling variant isn't found in Bugaria.
- There are more than 4 Dead Landers than are shown in-game.
- Bugs spend their youth in their pupa or caterpillar forms. They have normal human lifespans, albeit they live it a bit faster.
Characters:
- Vi is around 16-17, Kabbu is around early 20s, Leif is almost 30, and Tanjerin is 20.
- Kabbu's birthday would be February 14th (Valentine's Day) and Leif's birthday would be November 2nd (All Soul's Day). While the developers couldn't agree on Vi's official birthday, the PaperBug Twitter account gave her an unofficial birthday of May 5th, which is Children's Day (which would annoy her.)
- The Tidal Wyrm is a worm mutated by the Ancient Crystals.
- The Deadlanders are not allies to Omega. They fear it as much as Team Snakemouth does.
- Everyone knows Dead Lander Omega. Mar wanted to have a character mention it, but was overruled by Genow.
- There is only one Dead Lander Omega.
- Dead Lander Omega doesn't have only 1 eye and it doesn't have only 2 arms
- Deadlanders cannot enter Bugaria.
- Astotheles lost his arm protecting the Bandit Hideout from the Dune Scorpion.
- Astotheles' animosity towards Queen Elizant II stems from her rejecting his bandits' legitimate attempts to establish the Bandit Hideout as their own independent city.
- Vi is pronounced as "Vee" by itself, "Vye" when saying Violet (which is what Jaune uses.)
- Vi wouldn't have an accent since she's all about being a rebel.
- Maki's sword is made out of very tough plastic.
- Elizant II is aware of Tanjerin when he came to Bugaria with his house, but it's not like anything bad happened.
- Kabbu never learned his Master's real name, so he can only call him Master.
- Kabbu's sense of honor is strongly tied to Master, who is the equivalent of Maki in his homeland.
- Kabbu and Bit met during training.
- If Kabbu, a rainbow stag beetle, learned that he evolved(?) from a dung beetle, he would prefer not to think about that.
- Anna eventually gets Ven to forgive the Bandits for what happened. This lets his heart heal and his happiness slowly comes back.
- Celia is not an undercover Spy. She was directly assigned to Levi by the Ant Queen so he could get his permit. Although Levi and Celia's friendship started strained due to this, they have developed a deep mutual respect after saving each other many times.
- Levi's head is a helmet, since he thinks it looks really cool.
- Hoaxe's mind controlling wasps has to do with their antennae and being yellow jackets.
- The Wizard (aka Tarantular) being a sentient Tarantula is a special case and is directly related to the fact that he's able to use magic.
- Venus has a special root in the Bugaria Theater. She loves hearing plays as if they were Drama CDs. She loves chivalry, and the Bug Rangers the most chivalrous of all.
- Leif doesn't age conventionally thanks to the Cordyceps but, just like the Sapling, he isn't necessarily "everlasting".
- Leif identifies as male and is a "they" because they're a collective of fungus.
- Leif is unable to get food poisoning. The Cordyceps make short work of all food.
- Leif had a kid with Muse when he was still alive, although it's unlikely that he's aware of it.
- The Mothflies are not too smart barring their grouping up instinct. The False Monarch was an exception that rallied them around it. They didn't have many plans of global domination or anything, but they could've been dangerous if left alone. It's unknown if the Awakening is done working its magic on bugs. Just look at Yin's circumstances...
- Bea speaks with a southern accent.
- The current monarchs of the four kingdoms weren't friends with each other before the events of the game. Queen Vanessa had never even met the other royals due to the Wasp Kingdom's circumstances and nobody noticed when she was overthrown.
- Zasp and Mothiva did not first meet in the Ant Kingdom.
- Plant Guardians like Venus are stronger only in their realm (in the sense that Venus would not have a chance if she stepped outside her radius)
- Monsieur Scarlet is the only male ant in the game, is the only ant not from the Ant Kingdom, and has a husband named Leon.
- Elizant II's personality in the first half of the game was never intended to be seen as "evil" by the player, but the devs rolled with it after theories came about.
- The reason why Jayde was not affected by the Wasp King's mind control is due to a pendant Queen Vanessa gave her.
Cut Content and Changes:
- The Termacade was supposed to have 3 minigames instead of 2.
- Vi and Kabbu were supposed to get their own theme like Leif and get their own sad remix when the story focused on them.
- The Termite Kingdom was originally going to be optional.
- Vi and Leif used to fight Kabbu in the swamp during Chapter 5, due to him refusing to go forward. It was scrapped since it felt forced and weird after all they've been through.
- Samira was originally Zasp's partner instead of Mothiva, but was changed since it was felt that she was too nice to be an antagonist.
- Zasp was originally much stronger than Mothiva, hiding his lightning powers to not make her feel weak. This was scrapped.
- Venus used to be a known figure, but it was decided to make her hidden from everyone since there's no fun believing in a Goddess you can see.
- There were supposed to be more scenes of Neolith doing stuff in the main story, but they didn't make it in.
- The scuba ants in Bugaria Pier were supposed to have a bigger role, related to the Ant Tunnels, but it was cut.
- Malbee was originally supposed to walk in a tiny robot, but it wasn't used in the end.
- Breaking a rock holding up the giant book in Lost Sands was going to allow the player to be able to read it, but it was scrapped because bugs can't read human.
- Vi used to have two sisters who both fought with her before the devs decided to focus on Jaune.
- Vi originally had a much more abrasive and mean personality and was even a thief. She had to be toned down for the final release to prevent her from becoming completely unlikable.
- Jaune was going to accept very rare art pieces that Team Snakemouth found across the world, but it was cut very early on.
- At one point, the Wasp King kidnapped Elizant II in Chapter 5 and Team Snakemouth would have to save her (and maybe Queen Vanessa as well.)
