Chapter Text
Lena could hear the yelling from inside, were her lovely children finally going to admit where they had gone? She headed out onto the patio but froze mid-step as her eyes recognized a familiar blonde. Lena could have sworn that her heart skipped a beat.
“You left without saying goodbye… even to the children.” Lena said as they she stood where she was her gaze not leaving Kara. She was afraid that this might end up being a dream. Wouldn’t that be ironic, yet another woman who would be out of her grasp. This didn’t feel like a dream though.
Kara cast her eyes downward. “Well it was wrong of me. Forgive me.”
“Why did you?”
Kara shook her head. “Please don’t ask me. Anyway, the reason no longer exists.”
Andrea’s voice didn’t hold back her surprise. “Oh, Kara! You’ve returned.” She went to stand beside Lena as she took her fiancée’s hand. “Isn’t that wonderful, Lena?”
Kara smiled and gave a small nod. “May I wish you happiness, Ms. Rojas and you too Ms. Luthor. The children tell me you’re to be married.”
Andrea beamed. “Thank you, my dear.”
Kara slowly walked up to head inside before Lena asked, “You are back to, uh, stay?”
Kara paused. “Only until arrangements can be made for another governess.” Kara explained before heading inside. Lena gave a nod before she squeezed Andrea’s hand. She’d be leaving again and then things would be wrong all over again.
The children ate their dinner, stuffing themselves silly after being so starved and they went to bed precisely on time. Lena stood outside on the balcony of her room, her eyes taking in the scenery. Hoping that it would give her some solace.
Lena leaned against the railing, her hands folded. As she was staring out at the balcony, she saw Kara taking a walk along the grounds. She let out a shaky breath, seemed she was coming face to face with her answer.
“There you are!”
Lena turned to look over her shoulder as Andrea stood beside her before smiling.
Andrea spoke rather quickly. “You know I really must speak to the cook about that pecan pie. It is entirely too delicious for my figure. And it makes you much too quiet at the dinner table or was it the wine?”
Lena was half listening. “Humm? Oh, undoubtedly the wine.”
Andrea placed her hand on top of Lena’s. “You have no idea what kind of trouble I’m having trying to decide what to give you for a wedding present. Oh, I know, I’m enough but I do want you to have some little trifle for the occasion. I thought perhaps a villa in the south of France but they are so difficult to gift wrap. How do you feel about yachts?”
Lena looked at Andrea. “Andrea…” She began but Andrea was still rattling on.
“And where to go on our honeymoon? Now, that is a real problem. I thought a trip around the world would be lovely. Then I said, “Oh, there must be someplace better to go.” Don’t worry, mi amor. I—”
Lena pressed again. “Andrea.”
“Yes, Lena?”
It wasn’t easy to admit this, but she realized that as much as she cared for Andrea she cared for someone else. “It’s no use, you and I. I’ve been dishonest to both of us and utterly unfair to you.”
Andrea sighed, “No, don’t. Don’t say another word, Lena, please. You see, um… “ She cleared her throat. “There are other things I’ve been thinking of. Fond as I am of you I really don’t think you’re the right woman for me. You’re, um… you’re much too independent. And I—I need someone who needs me desperately… I’ve enjoyed every moment we’ve had together. I do thank you for that.” She lowered her hand from Lena’s. “Now, if, um, you’ll forgive me I’ll go inside, pack my little bags and return to Metropolis, where I belong.” She pressed a kiss against Lena’s cheek. “Good bye, querida.”
Lena watched as Andrea left her alone and shook her head. Andrea had broken up the marriage before she could even do so. Now she had a young woman who she needed to see. Needed to tell how she felt.
Lena headed down looking for Kara and eventually she found her near the gazebo. Kara had her legs stretched out as she sat on the nearby stone bench. “Hello, I thought I just might find you here.”
Kara tilted her head. “Was there something you wanted?”
Lena shook her head as she sat down beside Kara. “No, you know, I was… I was thinking… and I was wondering two things. Why did you run away? And what was it that made you come back?”
Kara rested her hands in her lap gently twisting her fingers. “Well I, had an obligation to fulfill… and I… I came back to fulfill it.”
“Is that all?” Lena had hoped she read Kara’s feelings right. Right now, Lena went from completely positive to slightly unsure.
“And I missed the children.”
“Yes. Only the children?” Lena asked. Her brow furrowed slightly.
Kara stammered. “Well…no. Or… Yes! Isn’t it right that I should have missed them?”
Lena nodded. “Oh, yes! Yes, of course! I was only hoping that perhaps you… perhaps you might, uh…”
“Yes?”
Lena raised her hand up. “Well, uh… I was hoping that you might have missed me?”
“Missed you… well I mean you and Ms. Rojas…” Kara’s cheeks turned a light red.
“Kara, there isn’t going to be any Ms. Rojas.”
“There isn’t?”
“No. Well, we’ve, um, called off our engagement, you see and…” Lena explained.
“Oh I’m sorry…”
Lena’s eyes widened. “You are?”
Kara slowly nodded. “Mm-humm…” Her mouth then dropped as it seemed she finally registered what Lena had just said. “You did?!”
Lena smiled, “Yes. Well, you can’t marry someone when you’re in love with someone else. Can you?”
“Lena… I.” Kara turned so she was facing Lena on the bench before Lena gently grasped Kara’s hand.
“Kara Danvers, I love you.” Lena smiled but suddenly she felt Kara embrace her. Kara’s lips crashed onto Lena’s in a desperate kiss.
They slowly parted, their arms still wrapped around each other. “I love you too. In case that kiss wasn’t obvious.”
Lena smiled laughing softly. “I’m sorry I didn’t realize it sooner.” She tenderly pressed a soft kiss against her forehead.
“You know… we will have to tell the children about us.”
Lena and Kara both laughed as they were picturing the look on the children’s faces. No doubt they would be shocked just how quickly things have turned. “I never thought I’d be able to love someone else again. To open my heart to someone else. You have my heart, Kara.”
Kara’s hand caressed Lena’s cheek. “You have my heart, too and I shall keep your heart safe within mine.” Kara leaned forward kissing Lena once more, the kiss slow and tender.
They had both gained a family and a love that would last a lifetime. The two women embraced under the night sky, not feeling the need to rush the tender moment between them. Forever and always.
