Work Text:
Yellow looks up, hearing the heavy footsteps of Kongo. Behind him hides a long, raven-haired gem, one they've never seen before.
"A new kid?" Yellow looks curiously.
"This is your new sibling, Bort. He's still a bit shy. I'm hoping you and Diamond can help him open up more."
Yellow smiles warmly at the youngest diamond. They step forward, cupping his cheek. Bort doesn't react, much to Yellow's surprise (and amusement.)
"Bort, huh? What a unique name, it sure fits a handsome gem like you!" Yellow smiles. This causes Bort to furrow his brows, not expecting the compliment at all. The other gems seemed a bit afraid of him, but Yellow was different. After a moment, he opens his mouth.
"Thank…you…"
He speaks slowly, the words felt uncomfortable to say, as he still wasn't used to speaking. Yellow still smiles, patting him on the head.
"I'll always be here if you need me."
…
Bort makes his way to the care center, his usually quiet mind filled with anxiety. A now familiar face greets him.
"Yellow's ready for you," Red Dia leads Bort to the room, smiling sadly. Bort nods, a sign of gratitude. Before he can enter, Red takes his hand.
"It might not seem like much but…they really do appreciate you seeing them every week."
With that, Red walks away. Bort walks in, closing the door behind him. Yellow stares at him, and he suddenly wishes he had his long hair to hide behind.
"Hey…" After all this time, words still didn't come naturally. Yellow tilted their head with a confused smile.
"Hello…who are you?"
Bort felt a strange tightness in his throat. He opened his mouth, forcing down the painful feeling of déjà vu.
"I'm Bort. Your sibling."
Yellow's eyes widen curiously.
"Bort? How unique!" Yellow smiles warmly, cupping his cheek. Bort flinched. By now, the touch was expected, but it's more painful every time.
"It's wonderful to meet you," Yellow continues, oblivious to Bort's mental anguish.
We've met before he wants to say.
"Nice to see you, too," he mutters instead. "I have to go."
The room felt uncomfortably tight, and it was getting hard to breathe.
"Already? Well, I enjoyed your company, Bort! If you ever need anything, I'll be here."
Bort's words got caught in his throat, the once comforting phrase sending chills through his body. He simply nods, leaving with a silent promise to visit next week.
