Work Text:
Napstablook didn’t have any friends.
They have Hapstablook, but they don’t really count, so.
It was hard to make friends when you’re incorporeal. Limits the games you can play.
So Napstablook gave up on trying, and settled with the fact that they would always be alone.
And then they met the sun.
———
Papyrus really wants to make a friend!
Sans is his best friend, so Papyrus just needs a good friend now!!
The other kids in his school are always saying that he talks too loud, or that they can’t be friends with the Prince, but just you wait!
Be will be friends with everyone! Everyone will know his name!!
And he already has the perfect monster to start with.
———
It was a normal recess for Napstablook, all things considered.
They stood on the side, watching as everyone played games with soccer balls and on the playground, both things that Napstablook would just phase through.
Then the gravel next to them crunches. They always see it happen to the other kids, and think maybe one day they could crunch gravel too.
“HI THERE! YOU’RE NAPSTABLOOK, RIGHT?”
A voice screams, and Napstablook jumps, turning their head to meet the Prince. Everyone knows who the Prince is, except for Napstablook. When he was being introduced to class, Napstablook got so nervous they phased through the floor.
Why is he talking to them?
“………….hi?”
Then he smiles, and Napstablook thinks that if they ever saw the sun, that it would look just like him.
———
It was during recess when Papyrus enacted his plane.
They were sitting by themselves, away from the other kids playing soccer or on the Playground.
Papyrus walks up to them, Napstablook. It’s their name, something he learned from the teacher.
“HI THERE! YOU’RE NAPSTABLOOK, RIGHT?”
He chirps, waving to them. They jump, turning towards Papyrus, but then they just look at him.
Many people get nervous around him. Mr. Asriel says it’s because he’s the Prince. They stay silent for so long, Papyrus wonders if they’re never going to talk, and Papyrus’s chance at a friend is going to go down the drain.
But then— “………hi?”
And he smiles, happy that his new friend is going to talk to him.
———
The Prince sits down next to them, “HELLO!! DO YOU WANNA BE FRIENDS??”
He buzzes like he drank four cups of coffee, and Napstablook tries to subtly lean away from that energy, lest it accidentally rub off on them.
Then Napstablook registers the question. They blink at him, wondering why the Prince would want to be friends with them.
…
…It must be a joke.
With that realization, the teacher calls them in for lunch, and Napstablook lines up with the other kids, never answering the Prince’s questions.
———
Ever since Papyrus has become friends with Napstablook, it’s been awesome!
They don’t talk much, but that’s okay because that means they’re always listening to Papyrus!
The teacher always pairs them together on group projects, and when he asks why, she said it’s because they’re friends!
Having friends is the best!
———
It’s been a week and a half since Papyrus talked to Napstablook for the first time.
Napstablook doesn’t really talk back, trying to focus on not accidentally phasing through the floor out of sheer nervousness. The Prince doesn’t really seem to mind.
It was on the second day when Napstablook learnt the Prince’s name was Papyrus, because the teacher paired them together for a group project.
The teacher seems to be doing that more now.
Napstablook hopes that Prince Papyrus will lose interest, they can’t handle all the monsters coming up to them now thinking they’re friends with the Prince.
———
Papyrus decided that he would invite Napstablook over.
It’s exciting because he never had a friend over before! He already asked Mr. Asriel and Sans, and they said okay, so it was set!
Today is the day Napstablook will come over!
“BLOOKY!”
It’s right after the teacher lets them go to lunch that Papyrus asks them,
“DO YOU WANT TO COME OVER TODAY?”
Napstablook turns to them, having been stopped in the middle of packing up, “….why?”
“BECAUSE WE’RE FRIENDS!”
———
“BECAUSE WE’RE FRIENDS!”
He cheers. It was two months in when Papyrus decided to ask them to hang out outside of school.
It was draining enough to be with Papyrus in school, they weren’t sure if they could handle outside of school.
Still, Napstablook doesn’t comment on the “friends” statement, deciding not to deal with that can of worms today.
“i’ll go to your house.”
———
Blooky asked Papyrus a weird question today.
“do you want to be friends?”
Papyrus was under the impression that they were already friends! The fact that Blooky is asking… perhaps he wasn’t clear enough?
“I THOUGHT WE WERE ALREADY??”
Blooky still looks at him. Papyrus realizes they’re waiting for an answer.
“OF COURSE!”
———
It was six months in that Napstablook finally caved in and asked to be friends.
Papyrus’s answer, “I THOUGHT WE WERE ALREADY??”
Napstablook wonders if they should answer. But they don’t want to upset him.
Napstablook continues to look at him, trying to convey how they want him to answer in a single look.
It must’ve worked, because he said, “OF COURSE!”
Napstablook didn’t try to hide their laugh when Papyrus tried to hug them, only to fall through their body.
(It was two weeks later when he died.)
