“Release or I cut. “ Neytiri hisses.
“ You think I care about some kid ?“ Quaritch smirks, but the hand that holds her daughter under the knife trembles ever so slightly, betraying his true feelings on the matter.
Neytiri narrows her eyes. As Jake would say, Bingo.
“ Mom, don't hurt him- “ Quaritch tightens his hold, and Neytiri sees red but she keeps her gaze fixed ahead. She doesn't dare move, she has the demon's full attention, she does not dare lose it.
“ A son for a son. “ She hears the boy suck in a sharp breath.
She sees a flash of doubt in the demon's eyes but he does not relent. In fact he bares his fangs and hisses lightly.
Well. It appears as she has no choice.
Still looking at The Demon in his eyes, she hisses openly in challenge as she slices through the boy's chest.
“I cu-” Neytiri's statement is cut short as she feels something warm cover her hand. She feels blood-that was to be expected. However, there was too much of it.She barely hears her daughter' s horrified gasp as she looks down and takes in the damage that she has created.
The boy's chest is covered in red, blood spilling through her hands and rapidly pooling on the floor. She feels his chest move up and down rapidly as he struggles to breathe.
“ Quaritch....Pl-Please… don't hurt her..–Let her go! “ Even with the damage to his body, he still pleads for the release of her daughter.
“ SPIDER !--Daddy, Spider s hurt do something ! “ Tuk pleads.
Numbly Neytiri watches, unable to peel her eyes away.
The bo–Spider' s eyes slowly rise to meet hers, desperate.
“ Daddy do something, please ! “
“ Please great mother…please ... .don't take him…please great mother..” Kiri begs, a cruel echo of her own words as her son lay diy-
A hoarse sound leaves Spider's lips.
“ Save….he-” and Neytiri sees Spider s eyes lose their shine, she feels the muscles in his body relax.
And for the second time that night, Neytiri is forced to watch as another member of her world dies, but this time by her own hands.
« MONKEY BO-« Kiri's shout is brutally cut off as Quaritch slices through her daughter’s throat with brutal efficiency and then lunges at Neytiri with a feral howl.
With a snarl, Neytiri drops the body in her hands and manages to block Quaritch s attack but the impact of it was so strong it sent them both tumbling backwards into the water )
Neytiri does not remember much after that besides the clashing of knife on knife and Tuk s horrified shrieks.
( Neytiri did not see this but minutes after her and Quaritch dived deeper into the ship to end their feud, Lo’ak arrived on the ship with Payakan, only to see the bloodied corpse of his (older brother) best friend and his sister s body on the ship and his father on all fours frantically searching for something. She did not see her ( now only ) son's face fall as he takes in the death of two of his closest friends and choked gasp that he emits as he sees Kiri s headless body. She did not feel the small tap on Lo’ak s back and she did not see both Jakes ear twitch and his gasp as he turned around to see the horrifying sight of Tuktirey standing behind them holding Kiri's head, wearing no expression that any child should wear ever. She did not hear Tuk quietly whisper “ I found her. '' to her horrified family members. She did not see Jake gather Kiri s head from Tuk s bloody hands and smoothen her features out so she looked asleep, she did not see him remove Spider s mask and do the same to him, all the while whispering I’m sorry,I’m sorry while cuddling a near-catatonic Tuk )
)
It is only when she successfully stabs The Demon that Neytiri is liberated from her adrenaline fueled rage. She watches his bloody body sink down with the rest of the Demon ship until she realizes that she last saw her family on the ship and then she starts to swim to the surface.
Once she breaks the surface of the water, she frantically calls for her family members but she quickly notices that she was the only living creature for miles. Just as she was about to die back into the ocean, she saw a jet of water in the far distance.
A Tulkun.
She begins to swim towards the jet, and she is relieved to not only see it, but four familiar blue figures on its back.
Lo’ak was the first one to spot her. Gently untangling himself from Tsireya's embrace, he hops onto Payakan's uninjured fin, signs a few things to him and silently reaches out to her. Neytiri gratefully accepts the hand, allowing herself to be pulled onto the fin.
For a moment,Mother and son exchange a tight hug, happy to see each other again. Then Neytiri notices Jake's silhouette in the distance. Remembering everything that has happened, she lets go of Lo’ak and she clambers onto Payakan's back, reaching her mate in just a few steps.
“ Majake ? “ She asks. Her mate does not respond, absentmindedly hugging a near catatonic Tuk, his gaze firmly fixed on the bodies in front of him. Spider, Neteyam and Kiri s faces were smoothed out in a way that made them look peacefully asleep.
“ Oh MaKiri,My Neteyam. “ Neytiri murmurs “ I'm so sorry. Sa’nu failed you both.“
She goes to touch her daughter's cheek, but Jake stops her.
“ Don’t.We can’t afford Kiri's head rolling in the ocean right now. “
On closer inspection, Neytiri notices that there is a piece of leather strap covering her neck entirely. Once glance at Jake's legs confirms her suspicions—the strap is her husband's leg protector.
It is only then that Neytiri fully processes that her children are truly gone and she breaks down in agonized sobs.
Come the day of the funeral, The Sullys do not bury one child that day, they bury three.
