"Have you seen Bruno?"
"No Pepa, I haven't. I thought he was with you!"
A small heap on the bed to the far right shook and giggled from under a blanket.
Bruno loved to make believe that his blanket was magical. It could fly and take him and his sisters off to wondrous lands where they'd steal treasure from dragons, rescue children from wicked witches, or free genies from their lamps. That wasn't all it could do. It also had the power of invisibility.
He threw the blanket off, and his sisters pretended to jump with fright.
"I was here the whole time!" he declared, with a chuckle.
Julieta interrupted their laughter with a gasp, as though she'd heard a sudden movement outside.
"What is it?" Pepa asked.
"I don't know, but it sounds big. Can't you hear it?" Julieta asked dramatically.
Bruno cocked his head. "I can, I can! It's coming towards the Casita!"
"It must be ginormous. It's making the ground shake," Pepa said.
"Could it be a dragon?" suggested Julieta.
Bruno climbed down from his bed and tiptoed to the window, pressing himself against the wall before peering out. "No, dragons fly. I think…" He gasped. "It's a child-eating giant!"
His sisters both screamed.
"It's okay, it's okay!" Bruno reassured them hastily. "We can use my magic blanket!"
The three of them scrambled onto Bruno's bed and he threw the blanket over their heads. He then held a finger to his lips and they all stayed very still while the 'giant' passed them by outside.
"Do you think it's gone?" Julieta whispered after a while.
"No," Pepa replied. "I can hear it right outside the window. I think it's looking for us."
"Don't worry," Bruno reassured them. "We're gonna be just fine, I promise. We're indivisible!"
Julieta broke character to laugh out loud. "I think you meant 'invisible', Bruno."
Bruno pulled the blanket off them and looked his sister directly in the eye. "I meant exactly what I said, Julieta!"
