Deep in the late night, the subtle sounds of paper being flipped and a pen scribbling could be heard. It was usual for Crewel to be awake at hours close to midnight once the school year started. That didn’t mean Crewel liked staying up, but rather, if he could, he would sleep at a proper time at any chance he could get. Unfortunately, some spontaneous work had to be done by tomorrow. Crewel’s original agenda was supposed to be related to Nahida’s assessment and her personal room.
Crewel sighed and looked up from his papers toward the clock on his wall. ‘11 o’clock already… I supposed it’s time for me to retire the night as well.’ He rubbed the bridge of his nose and let out another heavy sigh. Before Crewel had the chance to stand up from his desk, he felt his phone vibrate against the table. Someone was calling him.
“Tch, what could that damn bird be needing right now for him to call at this hour,” Crewel muttered in annoyance before he eventually answered the call.
“Crowley, it’s an hour before midnight. Give me one reason why I shouldn’t end this call and ready myself for bed, which I was supposed to do right before you decided to call me at this godforsaken hour.”
“Now, now, Crewel, you know I wouldn’t call you for nothing,” Crowley responded. He was expecting to hear a reply but was met with silence.
“...”
“I’m hanging up–.”
“NO WAIT– Haha Crewel, you know I’m just kidding with you,” Crowley laughed nervously on the other side of the call.
Crewel sighed heavily, “Just get to the point, Crowley.”
“Truthfully, although it’s already quite late, I wanted to invite you over for some tea and have a chat about Miss Nahida,” there was a sudden change in Crowley’s tone. This detail did not go unnoticed by Crewel. It made him raise his eyebrows in curiosity, but he decided to play dumb for now. He’ll get his answers soon, anyway.
“Oh really? That’s quite a surprise.” Crewel leaned back against his chair, “I didn’t think you’d have the time to inquire about Nahida since you claim to be always busy.” On the other side, Crewel could hear sputtering noises from the headmage.
“T–That is not the point! Although Miss Nahida is under your care, she is still somewhat my responsibility, so of course, it would only be right for me to be aware of her current status.”
Crewel resisted the urge to reprimand him and sighed. “Alright then, I won’t mind indulging you tonight since you have the right to know, after all.”
“Wonderful–!”
“My hibiscus tea should already be prepared by the time I get there,” Crewel hung up right after and stood up from his desk. He walked towards the coat rack and gathered his coat in his arms. Right before Crewel was about to wear his coat, he couldn’t help but glance at the door to his bedroom—behind it was Nahida, who was currently asleep. Crewel stared for a while. He didn’t know why he was hesitating before he immediately shrugged it off and proceeded to wear his coat. Without looking back, Crewel left his quarters to meet with Crowly.
