Work Text:

Kirisaki Shidou had never been good at letting go.

That was basically what had landed him in the middle of the strange Milgram prison in the first place. After all, he robbed many others of their lives, in a futile attempt to save the person who was dearest to him and was not already dead- his wife, who had nearly perished in that fateful car accident that had killed his beautiful boys, both young and healthy. Everything that he had cherished, gone in the simple blink of an eye.

And in the simple blink of an eye, he had found himself waking up in that fated prison cell, with nine other prisoners, alongside the fifteen year old prison warden (seriously, what kind of world were they in that a literal fifteen year old would be a prison warden?) that never failed to remind him of what he had lost. And as such, emotions that he had repressed and he had thought were gone for good inevitably broke down the dam, and the rush of guilt and regret caught up to him easily, leading to his hopeless plea for the death penalty ( so he could be finally reunited with his dearest and their two kids ), that went forgotten when he was voted innocent for the first trial.

Then the second.

And last but not least, the third.

And in another blink, he was in his office, once again, just like nothing had changed. After their verdicts, they had been sent back to the real world, where nothing much had changed. But all of them had grown as people, for better or for worse, and now two years after that incident with the prison, everyone had mostly found themselves a happy ending. He hoped Es was also doing well, even though it was wiser not to show that he had actually grown more attached to the prison warden.

He was now teaching himself to once again let go, this time from the burdens that he had carried on his shoulders for many years, how he had trained himself to put on a face of stability even when his emotions got the better of him many times. Placing all his things in a relatively small box (he had actually never realised how sparse his table actually was- just the basic things, nothing else- as he had cleared out all his past family pictures that he remembers smiling at many times, especially during his busy work hours when he was near to passing out), he looked once more around that room, and stepped out with a small yet sad smile, locking the door behind him.

After many years in the profession, he was quitting his job, and leaving his past behind to pursue a future that wasn’t what he deserved, but was what he wanted.

He doesn’t spare a glance at the glass double doors that were a daily part of his routine for the years he worked at the hospital as he walks through them for the last time. His legs carry him quickly to his car, and he places his stuff neatly in the back as he gets into the driver’s seat, allowing his mind to bring him to the place that had become his home after the events of the prison.

The familiar apartment complex comes into view, and he parks his vehicle, taking the elevator up to the tenth storey. The other had told him that ten was a nice number, perfect in every way, and he knew damn well that both of them weren’t perfect, but what they had, to him, was absolutely perfect. The faint smell of baking seemed to get stronger as he made his way over to that door, that was almost always unlocked just for him, that he knew how to open in that special way that was hard for most other people to master.

The aroma hit its peak when he entered the apartment. Apple pie, he guessed, judging by the fact that was the other’s favourite snack. He placed down his things, locking eyes with the man in front of him, holding out his arms.

He allows himself to fall into Kazui’s embrace, and allows himself to smile, letting go of all his worries for just a moment.

Even for just a moment, he felt at peace. At home, he thought.
