Work Text:
In the small town of PK Academy, life was often filled with mundane routines and predictable events. However, something unprecedented was about to occur. Saiki Kusuo, an ordinary high school student with extraordinary psychic powers, had grown tired of the monotony and decided to manifest his mischievous side.
It all started on a sunny Monday morning when Kusuo arrived at school. Casually strolling through the hallways, he observed various groups of gossiping students. An idea sparked in his mischievous mind — to create a series of rumors, each more bizarre than the last. With his ability to read minds, levitate objects, and manipulate time, he had the perfect tools to turn the town upside down.
Rumor 1: The Principal's Locked Closet
Kusuo decided to target the intimidating principal, Mr. Kanda. With a wicked grin, he started spreading a rumor that the principal kept a magical closet in his office. Apparently, it contained a secret passage to an enchanted realm filled with talking animals and hidden treasures. This sparked a lot of curiosity into the students as not even the students who got sent to the principal's office regularly saw what was in the closet. This resulted in an uproar of students either getting sent to his office when he wasn’t there or students sneaking in while the principal was on his lunch break.
Rumor 2: Psychic Cat
Kusuo didn’t really mean to spread this rumor, it just happened because somehow, the cat that Anpu had tried to get with found out that Kusuo was actually a human that could turn into a cat. Usually Kusuo hates whenever animals interact with him in general, but Pushi seemed to act like a sort of good luck charm, if you ignore the mushy thought she had for Kusuo. For example, he finally managed to stop the volcano from erupting and the only thing that was different was that Pushi was there. And that, despite the fact that Teruhashi loved cats, whenever Pushi was around, Teruhashi was not. He told Aiura as so. And word then spread quickly that Kusuo's beloved cat, Pushi, possessed telepathic abilities. She could read people's thoughts, predict the future, and even grant small wishes. Students could often be heard whispering their most outrageous desires to Pushi, hoping for a stroke of luck.
Rumor 3: Time-Freezing Fountain
The town's central fountain became the hot topic next. People began to believe that if they stepped into its waters at the stroke of midnight, time would freeze temporarily, allowing them to do whatever they pleased without consequence. The line for the fountain grew longer each night, as curious individuals hoped for a taste of freedom. Of course, Kusuo was the one freezing time for them and he would stop it at 12:01 every night. He didn’t need to sleep.
Rumor 4: Talking Vending Machines
Kusuo's classmates eagerly awaited their breaks, hoping to interact with the vending machines rumored to strike up conversations. Word spread that they gave advice, shared riddles, and even told jokes. Laughter echoed through the school hallways as students tried their luck, gathering around the vending machines. This one was actually Toritsuka’s idea, trying to connect more with girls by talking to them through an inanimate object. Kusuo would go on the top of the vending machine and turn himself invisible, and then he would converse with the students trying to get snacks and then he would tell Toritsuka about the girl he was trying to get that week. Then Toritsuka would get Kusuo with 3 coffee jellies every day after school.
Rumor 5: Invisibility Club
A secret club called the "Invisibility Club" was said to exist, where members had mastered the art of becoming invisible at will. Students whispered about the club's exclusive meetings, held in a forgotten corner of the school or a hidden room accessible only through secret passwords. Honestly this was just one that Kusuo had made up to justify turning invisible on school cameras.
Rumor 6: Flying Bicycles
Bicycles, the common mode of transportation for many students, became the subject of the sixth rumor. Rumor had it that if one pedaled fast enough, their bicycle would sprout wings and soar through the skies. Students spent entire evenings speeding up and down the school grounds in hopes of taking flight.
Rumor 7: Telepathy Study Group
Students started gossiping about a top-secret telepathy study group that met in the local library during weekends. The group members allegedly came together to enhance their dormant psychic powers, practicing mind reading and attempting to communicate without speaking a word. This group was actually composed of just Kusuo and Akechi, and sometimes Aiura. Kusuo would just open a mind connection between Aiura and Akechi when Aiura joined, but when it was just the two of them it was kind of nice to just study in the back of the library and answer Akechi’s questions and listen to his theories.
Rumor 8: Weatherman’s Secret Powers
Amidst these rumors, even the most inconspicuous people didn't escape Kusuo's mischief. Whispers spread about the school's silent janitor, Mr. Igurashi, being capable of predicting and controlling the weather. Students could be seen asking him if it would rain or snow during recess or if he could summon a gusty breeze during sports matches. The poor janitor was a little confused, but he started answering the questions when students brought him money and food to try and bribe him to control the weather. And Kusuo felt a little bad after that because he did end up bringing the food home to his family and using the money to get his children better clothes so Kusuo would change the weather just slightly based on whatever the janitor said.
Rumor 9: Secret Underground Tunnels
PK Academy, having stood for decades, was famed for its intricate network of tunnels connecting various buildings on campus. However, the rumor mill buzzed with tales of hidden passages beneath the school—a vast labyrinth where students could find shortcuts or secret treasures, leading to unforgettable adventures. Everyone had started looking for secret doors into the hidden passages for about a month before they just gave up, some even trying to start a mob. Kusuo hit them with his banana of memory replacements.
Rumor 10: Shape-Shifting Teachers
The faculty was not left unscathed from Kusuo's mischief. Teachers acquired shape-shifting abilities in gossips' tales, allowing them to transform into anything they desired. Students pondered if their strict math teacher became a mischievous squirrel during the nighttime or if the soft-spoken art teacher turned into a nimble cat when no one was watching. Some even dared to try and catch them shifting, but they never caught them.
As the days passed, each rumor gained momentum. Students' lives were filled with excitement, unpredictability, and a newfound sense of adventure. Saiki, content with his mischief, observed everything from the sidelines, enjoying the chaos he had caused.
Unbeknownst to everyone, Saiki had carefully constructed this intricate web of rumors, adding suspense and amusement to the otherwise mundane lives of his schoolmates. Little did they know that behind these rumors was a mastermind orchestrating each thread, pulling the strings of their perception.
And so, the rumors continued to grow, intertwining the ordinary and the extraordinary, until the town became a canvas painted by the vivid imagination of Saiki Kusuo.
