Chapter Text
You were mad. You were still mad the next day, and even Miles could tell so he sat somewhere else in class, and that made you even more angry. After class ended, you left the room, bumping into Kamiyah. The textbooks you were holding fell, and she gasps.
"Oops! Sorry girl." She helps you pick up your books, noticing Miles leaving without you. She hands them back to you with a quizzical look. "Um..why isn't Miles walking you to class? I thought that was like, your thing."
You roll your eyes. "We had a little disagreement yesterday," you say, trying to play it off as if it wasn't a big deal. But Kamiyah wasn't fooled. She knew you well enough to know when something was bothering you, and it was clear that something was definitely bothering you now.
"Uh huh," she says, raising an eyebrow at you. "So, you going to tell me what happened or what?"
"Nope," You say popping the 'p' and she crosses her arms.
"You never tell me anything," she whines. "I get it, you like your space but I'm your best freind. Do you tell Miles everything?" She asks.
"No, in fact, I don't. Maybe that's what makes the two of you different." You snap, and she scoffs.
"Wow, um okay. I can tell you're going through something and I wanna help you, but if you don't want me to--fine. Go it alone, see where that gets you." She says, and walks away.
As you walk to your next class you feel bad for saying that to her , but you were too caught up in your own anger to realize how harsh your words sounded. The rest of your day drags on, and by the time you're home you don't even have the energy to be mad anymore. You're just tired. Flopping down onto your bed, you stare up at the ceiling, replaying the events of yesterday in your head. You still can't understand why Miles would kiss you and then call it a mistake. It just didn't make sense.
Suddenly, your phone buzzes, and you see that there's a text from Miles. You ignore it. You had better things to do anyways, like how you had planned to steal a gem worth thousands from a fancy auctioning downtown. You knew it was a bad idea, but you loved bad ideas.
You wait outside of the kitchen exit for one of the chefs to come out to throw out the garbage. Surprisingly, it took longer than you would have thought. You jump out of the shadows, punching the chef in the face, and they fall to the ground. You put on the chef's uniform over your clothes before entering the kitchen. It was a small group of chefs and they all were yelling orders at each other. If this was what culinary work was like, you didn't want it.
"Aye, get back to your station." A tall man in the same chef uniform snaps at you and you just roll your eyes, picking up a pan and hitting him across the head with it. The chef stumbles into the stove area and you hit him again before he falls unconscious. The other chefs gasp in shock, and you throw the pan at whoever was in front of you. It hits them in the head, leaving you in the kitchen with just two scared looking workers. You walk over to the person you just threw the pan at and pick it up, walking toward whoever was closest to you next. Before you can hit them, they run out through the double doors, and the other one picks up a kitchen knife, backing up against the stove. "Please..I don't want to hurt anyone.." The chef says, holding the knife behind his back. You stare at him for a moment, before lunging forward, grabbing his wrist and twist. You hear a sickening crack, and the chef lets out a shriek. You throw the broken arm aside and punch the man's head, knocking him out. You felt..a little bad for that. Before you had time to mull over your guilt, you grab one of those food carts before pushing through the double doors into the main event.
You weave your way through the people and waiters over to the doors leading into the hallway, before you're stopped by one of the guards.
"Where are you going?"
"We..ran out of plates." You reply and the guard stares at you suspiciously, before letting you through. Once the doors close you leave the cart and press the elevator button, waiting for a few moments before taking it to the basement where the gem was supposed to be. Finally, after what felt like forever, the doors open and you step out. Upon arriving in the basement, you see that the area is filled with more guards than you'd expect. You watch from a distance before sneaking behind a storage shelf lined with different boxes and such, and you take off the chef's uniform. You step from beheind the shelf, humming.
"We were expecting you, Cat." A voice asks and you spin around. You're faced with guards.
"Aw, really? How sweet." You say, and one of the guards lunges forward to grab you. You kick him in the chest before he can grab you, and he stumbles into the rest of the guards, knocking them over. You dash around them over to the gem, placed securely in the middle of the room covered by a little glass box.
"This looks nicer than I'd imagined. I bet a child mined this thing, ugh." You grumble over the sound of the guards all running at you. You punch the glass and grab the gem, feeling its weight in your hand. You look around, and surprisingly the guards all have their weapons raised. You smirk, holding up the gem tauntingly.
"What are you going to do?" You ask, your heart racing in your chest. "Shoot me and risk damaging this pretty thing?"
The guards hesitated for a moment, looking at each other uncertainly. You took advantage of their momentary weakness and dashed past them, running towards the elevator. They shouted after you, but you were too fast. You slid into the elevator just as they reached it, laughing at them, and hit the button for the roof.
As the elevator ascended to the roof, you felt a rush of excitement as you looked at the gem. It was beautiful, and you didn't know where it came from but it looked better in your hand than whoever would have bought it. The cash would also look nice in your bank account. The elevator doors opened and you arrived on the roof, putting the gem away in your pocket. Just as you walked to to the ledge, the guards arrived.
"Don't move!" One said and you turned around to face them, smiling.
"Now, why would I do that?" You ask, before falling backwards off the roof of the building. You let yourself fall for a few moments, enjoying the wind in your hair and the rush of euphoria before aiming your grappling hook at a nearby building, heading back to your dorm. You arrive back about an hour later, setting the gem down on your desk and taking off your suit. You weren't sure you would pull it off, but you did, and it made you happy. But not as much as seeing Kingpin dead would.
You spent the rest of the week holed up in your dorm after classes, finishing whatever assignments you had to do. Miles and Kamiyah both were avoiding you. You felt bad for being mean to Kamiyah, but you were too deep to apologize now. And Miles still wasn't talking to you, so he was basically becoming more and more dead to you.
You had also got a sizable amount from selling that gem, and you knew you could now afford the things you always wanted AND help your mom. You bought yourself a new wardrobe, a fancy watch, and even a new laptop. You were living the high life, and it felt amazing.
However, the euphoria was short-lived. It wasn't long before you found yourself yearning for the thrill of the heist once again. You knew you couldn't rob another high-end event anytime soon, so you shifted your attention to catching Kingpin. You had come up with a simple plan. You would first get the drive repaired and use the information on it to expose him, and then kill him. However the first plan of action was getting that drive fixed at all. You needed someone who you could trust to fix it, and you could have sworn your uncle had connections to people who could do all kinds of things, meaning you'd have to revisit his apartment and look for his phone.
As much as you didn't want to go back there, you had to. It was really the only way, and you knew that you couldn't afford to waste any more time. So you set off for your uncle's apartment that night, hoping that there wouldn't be any investigators or whatever there. It was a low chance anyways, you were pretty sure nobody cared since the area he lived in was already riddled with crime. His death was just a normal occurrence for everyone else, and it made you angry.
You enter through the balcony. The apartment looks the same as you left it, and it makes you feel a little sick. You begin to look around, before you find his phone which was laying on the kitchen counter. You pick it up slowly, hands shaking and heart pounding in your chest. As you turn it on, you see the familiar lock screen with a picture of your uncle and your dad. You didn't know the password, so you try a few names like your dad's, and then his girlfriend and then yours. Surprisingly out of the two, the one that worked was yours.
You feel a lump form in your throat as you swipe through his messages, seeing conversations with friends and family that will never happen again, before beginning to cry. You felt so bad. He was dead all because of you, and you couldn't even fulfill his wish of giving up being Black Cat. As much as you wanted to, you couldn't. You already embraced being the Black Cat, and you weren't going to stop anytime soon. You compose yourself, taking the phone and leaving.
Your next plan of action was to talk to the woman you got the drive from. Her influence as the mayor's daughter would make the expose more believable, well, if you got her to even publish it in general.
You were beginning to get stressed quickly. The next day much to your surprise, Miles comes up to you as you're walking to lunch.
"Y/N." He says and you want to say something snarky, but you just ignore him, continuing to walk..wherever you are going. Eventually he grabs your wrist, and you stop. "Listen mami, I know you're mad. But I just wanna talk to you." He says and you laugh.
"Talk? You should have tried 'talking' to me 4 days ago. And don't call me that. You already lost that privilege." You snap, pulling your arm back.
"I did. You didn't reply. I just wanted to give you your space." He says, and you roll your eyes.
"So keep doing that, cause I don't want to talk to you."
Miles looks at you, his eyes filled with sadness and regret. You can see that he's genuinely sorry for whatever it is that he's done, but you can't bring yourself to forgive him. You lowered your guard for him. Forgot about what happened with the last person you were with, maybe hoping and thinking that he liked you and he still hurt you.
"Fine," he says, sounding more irritated than sad. "Si eso es lo que quieres." And with that, he walks away, leaving you alone with your thoughts.
As you continue walking, you can't help but feel a sense of unease. You know that you're getting in too deep with this whole Black Cat thing. You have from the start. It's not just about revenge for your uncle anymore, or a way to help your mom. It's an outlet for your pain, and it was obvious. But it wasn't like you would just stop now. You sit and have lunch in a secluded staircase, trying to hold back tears. After you got your revenge, what would you even do? Would Kamiyah even forgive you? Or Miles? You brush the crumbs off your lap before deciding you'd have dinner with your mom. That would probably help.
After classes, you call your mom.
"Mija! How are you?" She asks, and whatever stress from the day melts away just from hearing her name.
"I'm fine, mami. Can I come over for dinner? Is S/N still in town?"
"Ah..I wish you could but I have to work the evening shift tonight. I'm sorry. And no, she actually went back to school." She sighs. You're a little upset and wish she didn't have to work so hard, but you were also shocked about your sister going back to her school. You were convinced she would have your mom she wanted to transfer..
"It's alright, don't worry about it. I have to," You look at the stack of textbooks on your desk with a frown, "study anyways."
"Okay mija, but promise me you'll take a break and take care of yourself too. You've been so busy with everything lately." Your mom reminds you and you nod even though she can't see you.
"I will, I promise. Love you, mami."
"Love you too, mija. And be safe." She says before hanging up.
You sit there for a moment, feeling a little lonely. It wasn't like you didn't have friends, but they didn't understand what you were going through. You couldn't really talk to them about the whole Black Cat situation either. You decide to take your mom's advice and take a break, deciding to have dinner with someone who could help you. Not with your issues, but maybe your revenge on Kingpin.
You pull on your suit and exit through your window as usual. It was raining heavily, but you didn't mind. It added to the dramatic effect. You make your way to the address of the woman you got the drive from, getting in the same way you did the first time. She was coming from upstairs in her pajamas, absentmindedly looking at something on her phone. She looked up and noticed you, eyes widening. She dropped her phone, freezing.
"Don't run." You say, raising your hands to show you weren't going to hurt her, but she wasn't having it, running back up the stairs. You sigh and roll your eyes. Why did nobody ever listen to you? You follow her up the stairs quickly, and you almost grab her until she runs into the bathroom, locking the door.
"Open the door." You huff, and you can hear her banging on the windows screaming for help.
"I'm not going to hurt you, seriously! Just open the door!"
"L-Like I'd believe you!" She yells back.
"When have I ever hurt someone?" You ask, wiggling the door handle.
"You almost killed me the last time you came here. NO!"
You decide to just take matters into your own hands, kicking the door open.
She screams from the loud noise, picking up a toilet scrubber and pointing it at you.
"Cute," You smile, grabbing her arm and twisting it away from you, pulling her toward you. You grab her by her neck, and she starts screaming. You grimace, both of you screaming at each other.
"STOP! Stop screaming!" You yell in her face, but she just keeps screaming. She was probably saying something, but you couldn't even tell over both of you screaming. You kind of expected her to be calmer. What even transpired in the last weeks?
You step forward and she steps back, falling into the tub, you with her.
"Get off! Get off of me!" She continues to scream, kicking and flailing at you.
"You're the one who fell!" You growl before kissing your teeth, pinning her to the wall with your elbow, covering her mouth.
"Listen! I'm not going to hurt you! I just want to talk. Have dinner even!" You say, and she shuts up, finally.
You release your grip on her and she takes several deep breaths, looking at you with a mixture of fear and distrust.
"Why would I have dinner with you?" she asks, wiping her tears with the back of her hand.
"Because I need your help," you say, trying to sound as convincing as possible.
"My help with what?" she asks, sounding skeptical.
"With taking down Kingpin," you say, watching as she looks away.
"Why would I help you with that? You almost killed me the last time we met," she says, her voice shaking.
"I know, and I'm sorry about that. I was angry and I.."
"It's fine. Let's just..go back downstairs." She says, leading you to the dining table.
You both sit there, the room silent.
"I..didn't give Kingpin the drive." You say, and she raises her eyebrows.
"You sold it?" She asks.
"No, it's broken." You reply.
"You broke it?"
"I did, and I told him I broke it. And then he killed my..friend.”
"That's what happens when you cross Kingpin," She says, a sad expression on her face. He couldn’t have possibly done what he did to you to her...
"Yup. So..I'm gonna try to fix it. You think I can?" You take the broken drive out of your pocket, tossing it to her. She catches it, looking it over.
"You'd need an expert to fix this."
"I know. I have someone in mind."
"So, tell me. How am I going to help you in your grand plan?” She asks, and you sigh.
“You’re going to publish the expose for me.” You say, and she shakes her head.
“Nope. Not happening.” She says quickly. “I’m not risking my life for you. I don’t even know you. I mean, you tried to kill me!”
“I wasn’t going to kill you. And I won’t let Kingpin hurt you. I mean, after you publish it can’t you just..hide in one of your daddy’s houses or something? You are the mayor’s daughter.”
She rolls her eyes. “Kingpin has eyes everywhere. I’ll never be safe.”
“I’m planning on killing him anyways.” You snap.
“You’re going to what?”
“I’m going to fucking kill him. He killed my friend! I’ve been planning this forever. I know it’ll work.” You say, raising your voice.
“And if it doesn’t? What then? We both die like fools?”
“Nobody is dying except Kingpin.” You say firmly, and she sighs. There’s a long moment of silence between both of you. You poke at your steak.
“Fine. I’ll help you. But killing someone is a big choice to make. You’re just a little girl.”
“Little girl?” You laugh. “And how do you know that?”
“The way you act. You’re irrational, you yell at people and most of all I can tell by how immature you are. I studied psychology.”
You raise your eyebrows.
